I have never seen anyone say alcohol is good. A lot of stories involve protagonists whose crippling alcoholism is a FLAW, not a STRENGTH. I've seen more instances of characters in media smoking weed and being seen as cool compared to the middle-aged mid-life crisis man who is alcoholic. Also, both alcohol and weed are seen as the "cool" things for adults to do along with sex and having money.
No 20-year-old is going to say weed or alcohol is bad because it would prove Mommy and Daddy right. They're going to say its cool because their friends do it or because they believe it enlightens them.
