There's a reason every sci fi movie has a plot point where ~~*someone*~~ invents some ftl-like tech, without that we're not going anywhere. Maybe we'll have bases on the moon or mars but I doubt it, what's the point really? I imagine the coolest thing we'll actually do is mine asteroids, I hope I am wrong though

      Anonymous

The most realistic shit for this century is a moon base for research and tourism. The lack of an atmosphere is rich for astrophysics and geology.

Mining is still hard scifi funnily enough, the logistics of bringing tons of minerals back into earth is hell and building shit in orbit is even more scifi-ish.

So yeah, none of us here will see an autonomous colony

there are no valuable minerals on the moon that are not way easier to extract from earth
even helium-3 is a cope because you would need to superheat hundreds of tons of moon regolith to 1000F to even get one gram of this stuff to gas out of the rock. moving, heating and cooling that amount of mass would be an insane task, even on earth. plus the fact that a reactor that can even use helium-3 doesnt exist yet.
best case scenario for the moon is tourism and giant stadium domes where people play some exotic new low-G sports

It's not understood at all and can only be measured in relationship to the mass of an object. You'd have to generate artificial mass, good luck with that.

Space takes much, much more money than movies.

And shit, we have actually lost the ability to make some of what we used to use to get to space. The Saturn 5 rocket, for example, was modified on the line by engineers and we do not know what those modifications were to make it work, because the brain drain has cost us their knowledge as hey all retired or died (or were replaced by automation).

We barely know how to replicate gravity effects on an earth small scale (meaning we just spin shit fast). Artificial gravity is 0 chance without literal magic, because gravity technically doesn't exist in our reality, only its effects do ("gravitons" don't exist, or if they do we have never found them, and the math for calculating them even theoretically is flawed and has yet to be solved). We can measure it, but that's it and even then only in relationship to mass.

Pretty much this. The solar system is our cage, at least it's big and full of mysteries to solve, but we're stuck here. Even if we're to build some kind of livable space habitat the generations it would take just to get to the next star over(which has no oxygen or water rich planets) would make it so impractical and the odds of finding a new planet before running out of food or fuel are essentially zero.

In general the ONLY thing humanity is missing to do all that shit you see in sci-fi movies is a really bad ass source of energy that in all the movies you see is never explained, they just have some blue thing shining that generates that energy but that's about it. A realistic energy source that would actually take us to the next stage of evolution would be harvesting helium 3, but that's never happening because muh politics, I guess a huge war and the eradication of the 90% of humankind is an option but I have the feeling we'll get to the 100% before that that happens.

Plan A was to find the solution to the gravity control problem so everyone could get off Earth and go to some other habitable planet beyond the wormhole. It was never seriously considered to be achievable. Instead Plan B, setting up a colony on a habitable world beyond the wormhole, was the more viable option. They never thought they'd actually get the solution to the gravity equation

The space movies filled the gaps in our mind. We know they aren't real. But we need them to believe in space because the metaphorical vacuum of good space footage that is real is so lame we would question it otherwise. People know the Martian is a B's movie, but they are surprised man hasnt stepped foot on mars. They thought it already happens.

Now step 2 blows your mind. Space is a real force in our lives because of make believe. There are scientists out there that were inspired to choose their careers because of their love of star trek.

Space is either actually fake or functionally fake, but it feels more real because it has be constructed to live in our heads and produce measurable economic results.

Time was a force to be mined. But it is not real. Time can be measured in the other things attached to it. Not time itself.

So they gave us space time. And next is the multiverse. But they are all imaginary pyramid schemes to be mined of value until there is nothing left to mine and so another conceptual layer is added.

You could just look out and see the world is flat and time and space don't exist.
