Why does almost every show have such a hard time maintaining consistency after 3 or 4 seasons? I'm glad we entered the age of the limited series so we're not putting up with the writers/actors/producers changing into lazy homosexuals over time.

Take a show like Game of Thrones, which signals its final moments in the credits from the first episode and then, just in case, spends the better part of two seasons warning you that you're making the same mistake half the cast is making. When it all goes to hell, the audience still cries about it going off the rails and acts like the show had no bible or creative oversight. You might as well just not bother.

In Lost we have a show where they just made it up as they went along, worse than even The X-Files, but instead focused on telling good stories about likable characters in a fantasy setting. You would think that by the time we established the island fricking moves around on its own, it would be clear that this is a work of fantasy.

I will reiterate however that Gravity Falls gets it absolutely right. It's one big story which culminates in an event you'll feel you should have seen coming, everything sewn up nicely in the end and no bullshit politics except maybe the cops are gays. Watch it before they go back and ruin it somehow.

I watched the entire thing after the series ended, and even though I had accidentally seen an important scene from the series finale it wasn't ruined for me. It might even be worth watching the whole thing in the wrong order since the mystery implied for the long arc never really resolves. It's just a medium for a short story anthology. Don't actually take this advice as there are some really good story arcs that span several episodes, but the point is if you think you know too much, you don't. It doesn't really matter.

Because other shows don't shoot in Hawaii. They shoot in bleak, ugly places like New Mexico or southern California. The story might have turned to shit but it always looked good.

You know what's a great looking show even if some of its locations are bleak and ugly, is The Mosquito Coast.

      >good stories about likable characters
no one was watching lost for that

You were hoping for what, a hard science fiction epic about numbers stations, a giant tree crushing monster, and a ghost that followed his son to a desert island?

Black person, this show had my attention just with numbers stations. I was 100% hoping for some juicy science fiction. That said, the show holds up beautifully on rewatch because of the character focus. There are just enough great performances and memorable musical cues that you hardly realize most of the conflict is completely contrived.

This was more sarcastic and condescending than I intended it. I have no problem with people who were put off by the X-Files factor. It was disappointing coming to terms with the fact that the writers had no long term design.

do you not know what a recap is?
its just too damn long for a show that's supposed to be 'serious' and not some episodic studio drama. more is not always better anon. the fact that people have time in their lives to watch this more than once is mind boggling, if you have that kind of time then watch something new. id get it if it was like 8 episodes a season and 3 seasons long or some shit.

Was this even a thing on American network TV back then?

not that i can think of, honestly i still dont think its a thing on network today, these shows literally have to last entire seasons. i guess that's why i never really watched network tv besides like 30 rock or whatever.
it was only ever hbo/showtime that did it like that, it became "prestige tv" when streaming starting do it and you had more to choose from. of course euro tv was like this.

    >Lost alum Matthew Fox is set to star alongside Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) in Peawiener’s Last Light, a series adaptation based on Alex Scarrow’s bestselling apocalyptic thriller novel.

    >The five-episode limited drama series is based on Scarrow’s Last Light, which tells the story of a family fighting to survive in a world that has been suddenly thrown into chaos.

    >Fox will play Andy Neilson, an ex-pat living in London who is one of the world’s leading petro-chemical engineers. He’s brilliant and very in-demand, but his drive and ambition sometimes have been to the detriment of his family life. The story’s unfolding crisis will force Andy to reassess his priorities — both familial and professional. The only way he’ll be able to restore his family is by setting the world right, and he might be the only one with the knowledge and ability to do so.

LOST gave me a lot of comfy memories of watching it on DVD while home alone but rewatching it now it didn't age well. Leftovers is a much better show all around, including a cute female protagonist.
