No one wants to see a movie called Dick

You kind of need a lot of shit to get a solo Nightwing project off the ground. You either need to have it be a spin off something Batman related or a spin off from something Titans related. His character is just to interconnected to the larger DC world to just get a solo project by it's self.

They made Damian focused movies which is more complicated though.

No? They were Batman movies about Batman and his son, how is that complicated

Weren't the DC movies of that era build around Damian though? I thought they came out and said he was the focus.

He was just in Titans on HBO Max for the last few years.

A solo project. He has never been given one.

        Cuz he can't work solo.

How so? He's had one of DC's most successful solo books the last 25 years.

His solo book is mostly shit. It sold well during the early Dixon era, the double-ship Seeley run, and now the Taylor run. Everything else was mid. It was outsold by Batgirl for most of the New 52.

But it has sold consistently well. So there is an audience for him having solo projects.

Nightwing is a tough sell as a solo character. DC editorial used to argue that any good Nightwing solo story should just be rewritten for Batman. Same concept for movies and TV. Maybe make a Batman movie with him as the viewpoint character instead.

Other solo characters have a higher priority than him, when he’s already comes with the Batman or Titans franchise.

Because Dick's solo isn't exactly a true solo book... it's a Batman spinoff.

            >doesn't have stable supporting cast because the batfamily is his supporting cast
            >only has Blockbuster as a villain because nobody cares enough to build up anybody else and Batman and other batfamily members take his villains
            >two most prominent love interests are another batfamily member and a Titans member, and his tertiary love interest (Helena) is also a batfamily member
            >his book constantly gets interrupted or outright derailed/destroyed because of Batman crossovers

Very early Dixon was the closest Dick got to be a truly solo character, but he ended up fricking up severely and had Dick become way too reliant on Batman and the batfamily. He tossed Clancy out as a love interest and made a batfamily member his love interest, He tossed out the older male characters because he wanted to revisit Dick's 80s daddy issues and had Bruce give him advice. And that set a horrible precedence because now writers will make like one or two original supporting cast members to push (Guppy, Shawn, Melinda) while relying on the batfamily to do the rest and then the next writer just tosses the original ones out in favor of their own.
He also had a chance with Grayson but batfamilygays harassed Seeley so bad he just wrote what they wanted in Nightwing Rebirth (more batfamily and Bludhaven).

A movie might be easier as that would just be 6 hours max with a trilogy and even then Dick doesn't have the villains/storylines to back it up and they'd have to create original storylines. But Dick would absolutely not be able to support his own show without the writers making OCs or making relationships way different from the comics (eg making some one shot character like Gannon his BFF or some shit).

              >but he ended up fricking up severely and had Dick become way too reliant on Batman and the batfamily.
This might not be the exact reason but Dixon mentioned on his podcast that editorial got a lot of letters from readers wanting more batfam moments, so they asked him to do more

Batman fans being the reason why Dick can't escape was true then and it's especially true now, damn.

    Wait, really?

Seriously they should've made an Nightwing or Bat Family animated movie in the vein of Spider-verse years ago. Instead we get... Battle of the Super Sons.

Cause he's either a poor man's Batman or a spy character. And people who liked spy stuff don't like capeshit and vice versa.

Dick sells well as Robin with Teen Titans or Young Justice. As Nightwing he’d only sell well in a team context

  10. 11 months ago

Because his solo material is absolute ass.

His supporting characters are the batfamily, he has no normal friends, and he has no villains.
And if they are going to put batfamily characters in a movie, the main character and title might as well be Batman for more money.

The one Nightwing thing we were ever going to have that got far into development was going to feature Raven as a deuteragonist because Dick could barely support his own movie, let alone 13-26 episodes of a show.

How do you sell Dick without all the Batman stuff being introduced beforehand to help keep him afloat? His name is not as obviously tied to Batman either. There's a reason Batgirl and Supergirl got movies because the name is obviously tied to the male versions.

      >How do you sell Dick without all the Batman stuff being introduced beforehand to help keep him afloat?
I mean.. the only Batman stuff beforehand would just be his origin and days as Robin. One flashback/episode for his Robin and Nightwing origins would suffice.

The main problem is a show with Dick would struggle with real bad as he doesn’t have any villains and they’d have to make up any long form storytelling/overarching story.
A season with Blockbuster and his awful assassins trying to kill Nightwing and Dick becoming a cop and trying to stop corruption in the police force is pretty much the only canon overarching story they could do. That or his spy days or padding out court of Owls and Seeley’s Parliament of Owls/Raptor storyline with a bunch of OC stuff and Grayson family drama.

Can you guys imagine if they did and it became fairly popular and they do another love interest that isn’t Kory or Babs. Those shippers can’t stand Dick/Zatanna being popular among the YJ fans and wanted Seeley to kill Shawn off lmao

Would suck in all honestly. Either have him already be with Kory or him and Babs have a slow burn romance. But Dick ending up with some random Blüdhaven hoe just feels boring.

Why is everyone so focused on it not having any Batman or Titans stuff? Just do a show about Dick as a hero but from his PoV. The episodes that focused on him in the later YJ seasons were some of the better ones. An entire series built around that would be fine.

Why have a Dick focused Batfamily or Titans show when you can just have a Batman show or Titans show?

Also the live action Titans wanted to be a Nightwing and then a Batfamily show so bad it ruined any chance of it being decent

Because you can write stories focused on a single main character in more depth than spreading it out across a larger cast all the time. A series focusing on Dick's journey from Robin, to Titans leader, to Nightwing, and maybe even to Batman would be strong as you get to follow his progression as a hero. Dick's greatest asset is his progression and journey as a hero so it would be best to lean into that.

There was that one show that never happened where Raven was going to be a younger teen girl. Almost sounded like she was going to be his sidekick which would've been pretty fun. But we got Young Justice instead.
