You know they were joking in that interview right?
Refn is as good as Friedkin too. He has his distinctive style and vision, which is really rare for a contemporary director.
I'll give you OGF because it's a bit too artsy for general audiences but Drive was considered a masterpiece on release by both critics and the general public. It was very successful commercially as well (which is how mutts measure quality oddly enough). It gathered a cult following very quickly and word to mouth highly praised it when it came out. I remember everyone talking about it back then. The only movies that had such a comparable impact in recent times were Joker and Parasite.

There were dozens of movies that copied Drive's aesthetics (neon lightning) and music score (Kavinsky's retro electro music). It had an impact on cinema and was praised by critics and filmgoers.
All that while coming from a European director that was only famous among true film enthousiasts and was unknown to the general public. It really launched the careers of Goose and Malcolm's dad into higher status too.
It's wild you think that's a contrarian position. In real time, you can read this thread.
The movie was on youtube, with about 40 percent dislikes. Much of these were perhaps plebs expecting The Fast and the Furious, regardless, the movie is not universally praised, not even close. I've seen many people sour on the movie, myself included. Some were starved for Noir / crime movies. This can probably be reflected in newer reviews on imdb.
That retrosynth shit is awful and does not sound like good 80's music.

The two having a laugh changes little about Friedkin's genuine thoughts on OGF. I think that film is alright but to call it a masterpiece, or Drive; which Friedkin also correctly identifies as a topic that'll have to sit for a few decades, is absurd.
Friedkin is also full of himself. Refn is an autist who doesn't know when to fake modesty and honestly says what he thinks which makes him look like a self agrandizing homosexual but Friedkin has no such excuse.
He's just a boomer sniffing his own farts and owning it.
Its just needlessly long and pretentious. Martin, Viggo and Diana are the only interesting characters. The whole beaner storyline was absolute dogshit from start to finish.
I'll admit episode 5 was pretty good but that doesn't make the whole series good or worth watching. It really should have ended at episode 8.
The beaner story line was the best. It's a good mythos on the downfall of the US. >Needlessly long
Entirely missed the point of why the scenes worked. The series is not about the plot. Refn has always focused on aesthetics and violence as an art form. Long dry scenes accentuate the contrast between the unbearable uneventfulness of life and the short bursts of violence like lightning in a clear sky. >Pretentious
Just code word for being stupid and unable to appreciate film as anything else but a story.
Because Drive was a more traditionally Hollywood movie. Refn is as artsy as artsy directors get, and he only wound up directing Drive because of Ryan Gosling.
>Hollywood devours you and you then become one of them, I'm not interested in that >does exactly that and turns into hollyturd director
His original stuff was great because it wasn't just visually well-crafted but straight-forward real life issues handled in a non-apologetic and authentic fashion. Even something as stylized as Bronson had character and humanity to it. Now he's just jerking off away and self-obsessed.
Drive was surprisingly violent but really nothing special. I don't know how Ryan gets away with not acting in every movie, I mean, not acting poorly, but just not acting at all. I guess because he's handsome
>threw a table at a wall in film school and got expelled, then re-did the scene in Bronson >directed Drive even though he failed his driver's license exam like 7 times >directed OGF only so he could visit toy shops in Thailand then got upset because his wife put his toys in the attic >can't shoot his movies in non-chronological order >color blind >dyslexic >lost virginity at 24 >proposed to his first girlfriend (now wife), she initially said no but kept the ring >daughter doesn't call him Dad or Papa, calls him "Jang" the same nickname used by his adult friends and family >believes in Thai ghosts because his daughter sees them and Jodo told him some spooky shit reading tarot cards >tried to kill his stepmom but the gun didn't go off >literally wears a towel when he's shooting a movie to keep his energy inside him or something >can't pick his own clothes, wife does it for him >Mads says he can't talk to him outside of movie sets because he can literally only talk about cinema >kissed Goose on the red carpet at Cannes >kissed Elle on the red carpet at Cannes >cried on live Danish TV >talked about fricking on live British TV >has deluded himself into thinking he's close friend with David Lynch, randomly brings up "David" in conversations, while other people have no idea who he's talking about >despite his wife trying her best to dress him correctly, he still attends event dressed like a teenager while everyone else is dressed properly >almost got to his now wife to run away on their second date because he told her he was going to show her a beautiful, emotional film and then forced her to watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre >described The Neon Demon as being about him picturing himself as a 16-year-old girl >constantly kept mentioning that Elle Fanning had "just turned eighteen" at Cannes until there was little more than awkward silence in response to that notion >has no chin
ogf was good
>Drive
>Good
Someone, call this man an ambulance.
Someone, call this man an wahmbulance.
Refn unites psueds and dilettantes alike.
You know they were joking in that interview right?
Refn is as good as Friedkin too. He has his distinctive style and vision, which is really rare for a contemporary director.
LOL
Being a contrarian homosexual doesn't make you interesting.
>Disliking Drive / OGF
>Contrarian
LOL

Victim of his own success. He thought he is genious after Drive. Drive and Pusher trilogy.
No. It could be good if they let Goose beat some people few times.
he doesn't want to
Too old to die young is the best piece of media from the last decade.
Too bad you got filtered.
Its just needlessly long and pretentious. Martin, Viggo and Diana are the only interesting characters. The whole beaner storyline was absolute dogshit from start to finish.

Sorry nicolas, it just wasn't good.
That's your dumb mutt opinion.
Tell me a good series in your opinion so that I can shit on it too.
Complete pseud cope
It was shit. A shame he wasn’t kept on a tighter leash, could have been kino
you didn't watch it
I can tell
I watched it three times. Every scene is perfect.
Why did his wife steal his chin?
Because Drive was a more traditionally Hollywood movie. Refn is as artsy as artsy directors get, and he only wound up directing Drive because of Ryan Gosling.
The story of how they met was pretty funny.

drive was dogshit
>does 1 Hollywood movie
>people get angry his other movies are complete autismcore
Nothing autism core about the pusher trilogy
Drive was surprisingly violent but really nothing special. I don't know how Ryan gets away with not acting in every movie, I mean, not acting poorly, but just not acting at all. I guess because he's handsome
Both The Neon Demon and Too Old to Die Young are better than Drive.
But Only God Forgives sucks and is overrated by this board hard.
is skin is the wrong color
Neon Demon was way better than Drive
yeah, neon demon was great. probably his best movie.
>threw a table at a wall in film school and got expelled, then re-did the scene in Bronson

UNHINGED
He peaked with Bronson.
>filtered
Is he still going to make that Maniac Cop show on HBO?
I used to have an irrational hatred for Miles Teller's face until based NWR released TOTDY. Now I'm actually rooting for the guy.
>neon demon
>not good
Fricking filtered
nobody doses anything good after 40yo
He lost the Drive.
