Because you need funding and creative freedom to produce kino. Our film industry is entirely reliant on funding from the government, so only shitty propaganda gets funded.
Please elaborate how it’s all just “propaganda” now when it’s just kids movies, dumb but successful comedies, biopics about national figures/celebrities, maybe one decent original drama once in awhile and otherwise generic shit.
>it’s just kids movies, dumb but successful comedies,
All full of values and content approved by the leftists running the Finnish Film Foundation who control where the money goes. What do you think they base their choices on, besides simply what genres make money here? If you actually attempt to apply for funding, you'll be asked about how your project factors in women and minorities. Had a good laugh when a writer friend showed me some of the shit he had to fill out. >biopics about national figures/celebrities
Kind of self-evident.
Oh wow you mean when you apply for funding you actually have to prove value in your project?! Why I never.

Well, at least there's multiple themes to choose from, and you may just shove one of them in the background somewhere.
Or you just make another fricking biopic.

Not Hollywood, but there was a Soviet-Finnish joint production in the 50s that attempted to turn it into just that. It sucks.

That's the same everywhere, which is why it would better if they didn't exist. Hopefully zoomers and subsequent generations kill off TV altogether through uninterest.
Technically the majority of that story takes place in Denmark. I also don't know how willing the author would be to sell rights to SSSS as since her conversion to christianity she seems to be a little ashamed of it.
Her being a dyke is like the second most well known thing about her after the Moomins. It's not difficult at all to look up. Hell, even half of that shitty biopic was about her carpet munching.
There's a complete lack of passion in the Finnish film industry. It's a factory and everyone is there just to get paid. That's why everything looks like a TV commercial.
It’s entirely an issue of lack of funding. You can’t make good movies without a good script and good scripts take time to polish and improve and you usually can’t afford to work very long on any single script due to how limited the grants are.
Kuosmanen and Valkeapää have produced some kino recently but nobody is willing to pay to see anything other than low brow comedy. Niskanen had actual passion for the art but nobody is willing to go that far anymore
I’ve only watched one finn film and it was some garbage about an alky criminal finn who’s friends with a gypsy turned cop or something , my finnish friends made me watch it, it wasn’t garbage but it wasn’t exactly. good
I feel like not enough people on Cinemaphile know about Rami Jaber. He produced and starred in this Fast & Furious inspired short film where actors from Prison Break keep praising him for being such a badass driver and action man and he is married to Miss Finland. These days he is on the run from the Finnish police somewhere in Europe
A coping Hispanic or muzzie made this image. Reminder if a swarthie went back in time to classical Greece or Rome he would be enslaved and worked to death in a copper mine
Eh, I hope the new one is more interesting than his previous few. Not even b***hing about the refugee stuff. His films have just started to feel so samey. Don't think he has anything interesting to offer anymore. The newest almost looks like self-parody.
Dogs don't wear pants is pretty good
Was okay. Could've done so much more of interest with its material, but ultimately played it quite safe.
They also essentially want their own de-facto ethno-state, which is actually kinda based, if only to be used as an argument for other types of indepence. It's a complicated situation that should be handled smartly.
The 1955 version is still easily the best. Newest one is weird mix of okay actors and absolutely horrible actors. Not to mention the braindead editing. Although maybe that's better in the mini-series version.

I've met two finnish. one didn't really count, and the other was a lesbian - I found her intruiging. she sort of flirted with me, told me we should go for a drink, then cut off contact with me - I think because she was tempted to plant her vegana on my penis, which would have meant betraying her girlfriend.
Because you need funding and creative freedom to produce kino. Our film industry is entirely reliant on funding from the government, so only shitty propaganda gets funded.
then are there any worthwhile educational lap productions?
Low brow comedy is propaganda now?
I take it you either haven't seen much of it in recent years, or are extremely naive.
Please elaborate how it’s all just “propaganda” now when it’s just kids movies, dumb but successful comedies, biopics about national figures/celebrities, maybe one decent original drama once in awhile and otherwise generic shit.

Kind of self-evident.
You only get funding if you have people involved that are big names.
That also factors in, yes. But Tommi Korpela agrees to do literally anything for a sandwich, so that part shouldn't be too difficult.
Why would anyone want Tommi Korpela in their film
Beats me.
Oh wow you mean when you apply for funding you actually have to prove value in your project?! Why I never.

A faithful adaptation of Kalevala would be the most boring movie ever. If you try to turn into some kind of Hollywood fantasy epic you ruin it
something in the middle could be incredible

Not Hollywood, but there was a Soviet-Finnish joint production in the 50s that attempted to turn it into just that.

It had really nice looking sets though
True. At least they got the visuals right.
MST3K watched a shitty soviet-finnish movie about it
As a general rule it is better if your country doesn't have a thriving entertainment industry.
We do have a domestic TV industry and even that's rotten to the core.
That's the same everywhere, which is why it would better if they didn't exist. Hopefully zoomers and subsequent generations kill off TV altogether through uninterest.
They produced Isvaffel
Open door
Stand Still, Stay Silent was pretty good, they should make a movie of it.
Our film industry could never do it properly with the tiny budgets they're forced to work with.
Technically the majority of that story takes place in Denmark. I also don't know how willing the author would be to sell rights to SSSS as since her conversion to christianity she seems to be a little ashamed of it.
Aki Karismauki just won a prize at Cannes
Literally no one gives a shit about the non-Palme consolation prizes at Cannes.
Except that they do. Worse than winning one is not winning at all

Only the tiniest minority of arthouse nerds and Finns who happened to read in the news that Kaurismäki won something.

Genuinely thought OP was trolling/thatsthejoke.jpg, but these are actually Swedish.
They're too busy making black metal
Moomin is based tho
True, but that's mostly thanks to the Japs who actually produced the show.
True. But the characters and world had potential and charm from the start
Source? Tove Jansson always seemed based to me.
Her being a dyke is like the second most well known thing about her after the Moomins. It's not difficult at all to look up. Hell, even half of that shitty biopic was about her carpet munching.
I thought anon was saying there was something else besides being a lesbian.
She should have teamed up with Tom of Finland to make the ultimate Finnish gay cartoon kino
Moomins were created by a degenerate dyke
>old school lesbian living a private life
>just writes some books
Finland will make kino again.
They're too busy making top tier video games

Kuosmanen is legitimately horrid tripe.
It's literally impossible to get a gf as a average skinny Finnish dude
I would kill for a female fin
It’s easystreet if you’re a fennoswede. God i love my life.
Obviously
Only if you're korean or hot. Imagine pic rel with a chud face
This is what women want. Not some bald buff dude.
It's what I want to and I'm a man
I thought young women liked skinny guys these days
Not true. Just go to university, studying medicine, law or business and it's very easy. Women come to you.
I've been 5 years at Tampere university and I'll graduate next year. I know a couple of old class mates who ended up as incels in Helsinki

Anyway university doesn't work. Women don't care if you're not a doctor or something lol
women only care if you have social status and 6 figures a month

That's because this is a shit country, Scandis do everthing better.
Everything they make is state funded/ supervised and shit. Actually creative Finns are too busy making good video games in the private market
>Alan Wake
>Barotrauma
>Cities Skylines
>Cruelty Squad
>Max Payne
>My Summer Car
>Noita
>SCP Containment Breach
>Ultrakill
All made by a country of only 5.5 million people.
Pure unadulterated kino
When is the new Kaurismäki flick coming out. I read he got good reception at Cannes film festival.
That homie has been making the same film for like 20 years straight and gets clapped every time.
Many directors do. People still gobble up whatever slop Wes Anderson churns out.
Not that some of them aren't fun. I liked grand budapest hotel.
The finnish theatrical release isn't until the fall. Date still unspecified.
I feel like not enough people on Cinemaphile know about Rami Jaber. Nordic Noir Kino.

It's the law.
This is b-tier scifi schlock kino of the highest caliber and I still quote it to this day.
the battle scenes were much better than i expected
Finnish art has almost always been shit in general, outside of just a couple of names in each medium. Too autistic for art.
Memes are art and we're a powerhouse

everytime a movie comes out of here, its always cloudy, rainy and overall depressing looking. Kind of like Russia but not grey
Unknown Soldier (2017) is a good war movie, or mini-series from 2018.
Haven't seen any of them yet, but I've seen people recommend the older adaptations in other threads.
Finngols, which one to go with?
Just watch the new one, the film version
why tho
Thanks.
Why the film, isn't the series a more complete experience? Heard good things about it.
The 1955 version is still easily the best. Newest one is weird mix of okay actors and absolutely horrible actors. Not to mention the braindead editing. Although maybe that's better in the mini-series version.

Winland gave us Käärijä.
And for that they should be punished.
I don't even watch gayvision yet I'm still tired of this mongoloid.
Go to sleep, Doreen.

>le nothing happens but in finnish
Almost unattractive enough to play a femcel. Not quite.
that's why Aki Kaurismäki casts her so often. She usually plays tragic female character in his movies.
The Match Factory Girl is femcel kino, and the shortest film by Aki, so probably the easiest way to find out what his movies are like.
What the actual frick are Finns?
