Why is Blue Beetle bombing?

It has a positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. It has positive word of mouth on Twitter. Double Toasted liked it. And it stars a Latino who isn’t a fascist (unlike Batman).

Why did it bomb? Does it have a chance at redemption like Elemental?

Yep. The only winning move for a BB movie would have been to avoid the scorched earth of the scarab suit. An earnest yet light-hearted Kord would have at least been somewhat novel in the current market and might have reasonably hoped to end up a cult classic. I like Jaime, but he has nothing unique to offer except his race in the already-crowded movie space, and Latinos don't turn out like blacks do.

Yeah it would be better to start from a non capeshit property, and then if that succeeds you can expand from there into the capeshit if you really need to.

          they did that, in 2017

I think Gunn convinced WB a shared universe is still possible. Which is why they are planning on a new Batman movie, a Superman movie that has tons of superheroes, and keeping stuff like Peacemaker canon despite not making sense.

I think WB is overestimating how much the public likes Batman and overusing him.

The Batman was suppose to make a billion and while managed to make 700M, made less than Dr Strange 2.

And the Flash was advertised as a Batman movie with multiple Batman’s and most of the toys were Batman related and it still bombed.

It also des not help that Warner has a horrible habit to overinflate budgets, like how they recently confirmed that The Flash costed 300 Million instead of the previously reported 220 Million, making it even a bigger flop than previously thought, like seriously, how does The Batman cost 185-200 Million dollars?

Barbie is the highest grossing theatrical run in WB's history, and is STILL putting butts in theater seats.
It's their most successful movie ever.
Everything else is fricked. At best, DC movies will be scaled back to modest budget pieces made to fill gaps in their schedule. At worst, they're pulling the plug unless Legacy is a runaway hit.

exactly. And let's be honest - the MCU really oversaturated a lot of the genre tropes in the most lowest common denominator fashion possible.

I am genuinely excited for the new Spawn movie, if it ever actually happens, just so we can have a grimdark X-Treme 90's-core edgy palate cleanser.
Everyone will be nostalgic for badly timed quips and giant CGI blooms when they watch Jamie Fox teleport inside of a dude and rip his way out of the dude's corpse, to get revenge for the murder of his hobo friends. We can all join hands and sing Kumbaya as Violator literally eats people's hearts out.

                Anonymous

I've been re-reading it lately, first time in years, and lots of stuff is clicking that didn't when I was younger. Violator isn't even a villain, really. He's stuck on Earth, because he wasn't good enough at doing demon stuff, but he goes around finding and killing the scum of the world: murderers and rapists and the like. Sure, he's doing it to bolster the armies of Hell, but he's making the world better for bad reasons. He's basically a second anti-hero who occasionally shows up to upstage the main character, and it's just so much fun.
He usually just butts heads with Spawn to test him, or give him a tutorial on his powers, or because he gets bored. They're basically co-workers who don't get along but hate their boss more than each-other.
                It's fricked.
                And it's so much fun.

I should add that I'm french, and "rape" in frogspeech is "viol". So it's like having a vilain named "RAPEMACHINE" going around pulling off people head.

Yeah I know, but from my understanding it's less used and not the default word for it. Violator also is litteraly a english word, but a french would say "violeur". The "ator" part make it sound like latin and it add to the lulz factor.

Anyway, love Spawn, never been a big fan but it's definitly fun.

Genre fatigue and a bad reputation for the brand and studio. Blue Beetle may be a good movie, but it comes on the coattails of a decade of awful garbage, and an announcement that it’s effectively being dumped and that it won’t be required reading for the next movie.

The lemon is dry. Warner has squeezed every last drop of juice from its audience and the only people left are the small group of die-hards.

Comic books are not popular. Sales-wise, most barely skate by without losing money. Even with variant covers and new number 1’s every year, nothing does a million copies in sales. Between Canada and the United States, there’s a total population of more than 368 million people.

If you tallied up all the people on this continent that buy monthly floppy books, there’s likely less than one million regular comic book readers. And only a small portion of that tiny figure gives a frick about any particular character.

Nobody cares about comic books, and a tide of positive reputation was kept Superhero movies going. That tide has gone out. The only people who still want to watch them is the same less-than-one-million people who buy comic books. Hell, less than that, because I sure don’t want to spend $15 to see another superhero movie. My ability to give a frick has been burnt out.

      Anonymous

always seen super hero movies as a quick option for a parent or a young group of friends looking for a movie. nobody goes out and drives to a theater just for the next [HERO] movie. it's just a simple superhero action movie, same as all the others, and no one really complains about seeing something with decent quality (in terms of looks) but if there was a specific franchise that released a sequel or a movie that just interests a specific person then the capeshit movies get forgotten. mission impossible is iconic and memorable, people are familiar of what a barbie is regardless of gender, and superhero movies are common but it's all mashed together. like what you said about such a small market of consumers that go for comics, there's only so many people who knows who blue beetle is, if it's not the top of the top of superhero movies like marvel then why bother?

The stupidest fricking logic I've ever read. Comics were niche by the 2000s, but that didn't stop those movies from making money

How many people read books before Hollywood adaptations?

And if that's the case, how come every anime or manga adaptation bombs horribly in the United States despite supposed superior sales?

        Anonymous

I’m not saying that the movies are failing because the comic book audience is small, I’m saying that the movie audience is now settling into the same small population density as the comic audience.

Comics had a huge boom where they became a dominant cultural phenomenon. Now they’re not. Superhero movies are coming down from their boom, and are quickly falling into the same pit of irrelevance.
I could have worded it better.

When a movie succeeds or fails, it almost never has anything to do with the actual movie. Nobody knows if it's good or bad until they see it. What people do know, is the movie that came before it. People are mostly disappointed at the movie making machine that churns out generic super flicks, so when a new one comes out, they respond with "meh".

that's not true, but even so - if they popular or (at the very least, sold moderately well) from the second comic renaissance of the 1960s-1980s - it shows that the core concept is a strong one.

Shang-Chi, for example, hadn't been relevant in recent years because of the inability to reprint his old run due to Fu Manchu rights issues.

That doesn't take away from the fact that Master of Kung Fu was more popular or sold better than any Young Avengers or Blue Beetle book.

    >Why is Blue Beetle bombing?
They made a movie for Latinos and forgot to make the main female character sexy, for those who don't know Bruna Marquezine was called A BUNDA and the director put her in the baggiest pants possible it's as if the producers and the director were disgusted with fat ass. DC is run by idiots, they're making a genre of movie and they don't know who the people are who are going to see it and Blue Beetle alone wouldn't hold the movie together a love interest who was a heroine like Fire would be perfect but they like to lose money

It's a movie focused on strong family values, features no LGBTQP+ characters, focuses on a straight same-race relationship, and the only overt political references are essentially jokes from a Dale Gribble-esque Mexican or characters wishing they could have a better life. The white woman villain is also balanced by an unseen benevolent white hero that everyone loves and her race isn't presented as the issue. Sounds pretty based to me.

      >but the opposite of all that
The movie is firmly allied with LGBTQ+ creators and seeks to create a safe space for inclusivity by queer coding the protagonist. The overt fascism of the superhero is challenged by an alien force, which signals strong poscolonial themes.

The protagonist kissed a girl and simped for her.

Works for me, straight but bi.
        >The overt fascism of the superhero is challenged by an alien force, which signals strong poscolonial themes.
And? Colonialism makes whites cares for brown countries.
This movie had the white woman being at fault for once and getting blamed for colonialism like others did.

Why do people care so much that some side character called Batman a fascist? Peacemaker said he was a cuck who eats shit but I don't see any anger at that or anybody who's ever said something bad about him in his own shows or movies. But to answer your question it's a combination of DC having very little credibility outside of Batman, a lot of DC fans only liking Batman and people not knowing who Blue Beetle is. Jaime is probably the most popular Blue Beetle in the modern age but DC didn't think to capitalize more on him with a show years ago, especially if they knew they where going to make a movie about him.
