devgru did the king Black person raid which is the navy version of deltaforce but since they pretty much only recruit from seals since thats the only """elite""" combat force the navy has, they pretty much all seals too and sometimes just get called that by the media. devgru was also formed out of a single seal team so its essentially just the counter terrorism seal team. its not called devgru anymore either for some dumb reason

also for legal reasons when the us assassinates someone with military, they attach them to a cia "observer" so that its technically not a foreign military killing guys, its simple cia assets doing it

When operating out in Middle East they become part of whatever nation's military that stand to gain from the operation. Every time they kill some rebel leader in Iraq or Yemen or whatever it's done by a Saudi or Kuwait major

The original comment was wrong, devgru is not formed “mostly out of seals.” It is all seals, because devgru is just seal team 6. My friend is literally on devgru. They were called damnec or however you spell it for the past couple of years. They recently switched the moniker again

devgru is not literally seal team 6. st6 existed in the 80s but was disbanded because of some bad pr and replaced with devgru. there is literally no such thing as seal team six. you dont get sent to seal team 6. there is no seal team 6. youre a moronic Black person and so is your """friend""" if he even exists, you most likely dont understand what hes saying though. its got a nickname of st6 because of its history but its ~literally~ not. you can look at orders to be attached to devgru/their current name. not seal team 6 which doesnt exist. the navy does have other combat jobs youre just Black person moronic and dont know that. im sure a swicc guy or two have wound up in devgru.

tl;dr youre a Black person moronic talking about shit you dont understand with the authority and confidence that would make a redditor blush

Basically the CIAs own paramilitary arm that they use to conduct the most sensitive operations. And they get to pick the best people from delta force and every other special operations unit. It's as elite as it gets, at least that the public is aware of

This one, perhaps. There are a couple of them, based on the Iranian Embassy siege back in the day, in the UK. Long story short, a bunch of insurgents took control of it and with hostages, the British government decided "no thank you" and after a few days and attempts to negotiate they sent in the SAS, who were caught on live TV from the news in the process. It was the first real sign that the SAS still existed, and because it was broadcast to millions during a bank holiday everybody suddenly knew about them.

I met up with him 20 years later and he was a totally different guy. When I walked in the empty restaurant he was sitting in the very back corner next to an exit door with his back to the wall so he could see the whole restaurant. The laughter and love he shared so freely before was totally gone. he'd become a contrarian and regretted all his military service even though he's a legit war hero who's met 2 presidents. he'll probably be depicted in a war movie eventually. war's a hell of a thing.

It's been a while since I've read up on it so I'll give you the main points I remember. Recon Battalion works for the Infantry Division. They scout 10 miles ahead to make sure it's possible for everyone else to move forward. Force Recon works for the greater Marine Corps. They are more autonomous, given riskier missions, they also scout further than 10 miles.

This is stuff I read over a decade ago. A lot has changed so what I'm saying is probably outdated.

This was my understanding of it too.Recon Batallion are literally the tip of the spear, meanwhile Force Recon are like the arrow fired into the night and USMC SOF equivalent

There's a big difference between Force Recon and Recon Battalion. MARSOC came from Force Recon. The guys in Generation Kill were Recon Battalion.

              What is the practical difference?

Marsoc does the same thing green berets do. They literally were both on the commando mission in Afghanistan and would alternate between that and vso. I was in force plt in 2010 and we would have 30 of us go out into the desert outside of the regular infantry ao, establish a patrol base and watch for dudes driving in with guns and stuff. Sometimes we would engage them but we really just did recon.

I don't remember where I heard this from, but a veteran gets a office job and they have a team building event where they have to share something about themselves. One lady says she likes a football team, some guy says he saw a movie that weekend, the veteran says he killed a man. They stopped doing team building after that.

There absolutely are those dudes in the military, hell I'd say it's most of them that stay in. But yes you actually do have to do all of those things(solve problems without direct oversight, answer for failures, and compete with your peers. Once I had to do something called direction finding(finding the enemy via radio signals that they're producing). All of the equipment went down because it was old as frick and we were in the middle of a humid jungle. I had my best antenna guy make a highly, highly directional antenna and attached it to one of the pieces of equipment that could at least tell me signal strength and managed to DF the enemy using that. Was pretty accurate too.

I Worked in aircraft maintenance on F-16's where you literally had to solve problems without your supervisor, problems that even required thinking outside the box. The military is competitive it's just there is no financial incentive (one of the reasons why I left). Sebastian Junger did a thesis on it with a book called tribe. Since PTSD rates outstrip actual combat experience. Some of that is milking the system (and as much as I am envious good for them, the system milks their youth and health), but it's also you go from an institution which even with its bullshit homosexualry is still full of esprit de corps to the utter atomized frick-you-I-got-mine culture. Unless you go ferreting it out we don't have much in the way of the camaraderie that some anons mention in their reply. See

Also interviewed some Sarajevo chick who lost a leg during the siege who admitted shamefully that she and others sometimes miss the war. Yeah, they got food and money now and it's peaceful but there was a sense of purpose and camaraderie back then. And how suicides dropped in NYC after 9-11.

tl;dr you have a sense of purpose and shared fraternal camaraderie of putting up with bullshit together (like an extension of grade school friends), then get jettisoned into the consoomer sink-or-swim nobody cares about you in the least Americana.

1st SFOD-D is kind of hard to depict since they do the most black ops kind of shit so really nobody knows exactly what they do, nobody knows exactly who they are. Unlike regular personnel they do not have to abide by godfather's grooming standard so they can rock a full beard. They also don't have any badges, so they cannot be identified as Delta.

There are two ways to make a show or movie about Delta. One is some stupid shit like The Unit that's mostly just housewife drama, or it might be closer to what Delta actually do but people find it unconvincing, not plausible. So what can you really do? The unit is the most secretive of units in the US armed forces, I'm pretty sure the US military doesn't want people to enlist just to make it to delta, because all of the recruitment is from green berets or rangers and even from those guys who are tough as nails the majority can't make it through.

Navy seals are easier to depict since they are in larger numbers and they don't operate missions that are as covert as the Delta operations are. Navy seals go in and out before nobody notices. Delta doesn't have to keep the brass informed, they don't have RoE or any SOP. They exist basically as ghosts. All of them are trained to be expects at every aspect of their team, so all of them are medics, all of them are sharpshooters, general operators, engineers, you name it. No roles, if a medic gets shot, all of the rest of them are medics, and so forth. This is why delta is arguably the most deadliest force in any armed forces of any country.

Sorry, the CIA has it's own guys that do cool guy operator shit, and that group of guys has been called different things over time. Special Activities Division(SAD), Special Operations Group(SOG), and a few others I can't recall. They're almost always former military operators pulled from the SEALs, Delta, Force Recon(probably pulling more from MARSOC now), etc.

Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group(MACV-SOG) was a multi-branch organization(meaning it too pulled from all the special dudes from the different branches) specifically for Vietnam, doing special operations shit in Vietnam. That was probably the SOG you read about doing stuff in Vietnam.

Navy SEALs are the special forces for the US Navy. Green Berets are the special forces for the US Army.

Delta Force is a smaller, more specialized group within the US Army recruited from Green Berets and other special forces within Army. So basically more elite than Green Berets. The Seals have a similar group within their ranks (Seal Team 6 or DEVGRU).

Biggest reason is the fact that they are still not officially aknowledged by the DoD. Oftentimes when military-themed films reach out for military cooperation, mentioning Delta by name is taboo. Black Hawk down was the big exception because it was a very public failure.
When a studio sends a script to a DoD rep to approve, any mention of Delta will politely be asked to change the name to a more generic "special forces" or risk not getting any cooperation and the access to hardware, troops, etc that would entail.
That's why you get movies like Chuck Norris's Delta Force where the hardware was all supplied by the israelis as the American Military wanted nothing to do with it.

Coolest shit was parachuting and firing all kinds of weapons, including RPG. I wasn't prepared for what actually happens when you fire it - fricking loud as hell, your ears ring and you can't see shit in front of you because of the smoke. And then when the rocket explodes on the target you can barely process what happened. Also it was surreal to fire my AK with a suppressor. But after many shootings you get used to all.
I didn't see combat of course, so those are mostly the highlights of my time in the SFs. And, of course, the weeks in the mountains in a tent. That was neat, because my tent had a fireplace, if you can imagine it. Outside was -10 and in the tent I was in a shirt. But it wasn't always fun. We had lectures for days in what was practically class rooms. And you didn't want to be on the cooking/cleaning shift. Those sucked a lot.

Delta Force has a different route to get into. From what I know they look at candidates thru their already established reputation in the Army and it's a matter of applying and know the right people.

The Navy Seals are mostly candidate who are in great physical shape either straight from the civilian world or prior enlistment and they go thru Boot Camp , Pre-BUD/S then BUD/S.

Delta Force are the equivalent of DevGroup. Delta will take a look at any applicant from any branch (er, maybe not coast guard?). DevGroup only has experienced SEALs elligible to apply as assaulters. You have an easier time getting a look in to Delta than you do Dev, with many reservists successfully joining.

Yes, Coast Guard too. Anyone in the armed forces can join, even reservists.

shame our government is slowly prosecuting them one by one and throwing them under the bus for """"""""""war crimes""""""""""" (fake and gay)

you /misc/ homosexuals keep parroting this without realise that it was one gay little city, the equivalent of showing someone events in San Francisco and saying that was is the what it is like to live in Florida or Texas?

The homosexual who filmed is the one who should have been punished. If you have a problem with pieces of shit being executed don't send the SAS anywhere or let them do anything.

It was also that multiple governments kept continually sending them in when they probably should have focused elsewhere sometimes. Constant use risks dulling the knife, so to speak.

The Australian Special Operations Task Group (SASR and Commandos) did something like 20 deployments in Afghanistan which were full of frequent high intensity combat often out in the field for days or weeks at a time. Considering the relatively small number of operators that was multiple deployments per operator with little rest in between. It seriously fricked a lot of them up.

None of those allegations were about the SAS. They were about 2nd Commando, their bogan little brothers.

Why do people call special forces soldiers as operatives?
My uncle was in the SRR and never referred to himself or squaddies as operatives

      Anonymous

Operatives are CIA agents. Operators are Delta. What Delta train in is called the Operator Training Course, or OTC for short. Not all Special Operations personnel are Operators.

CIA doesn't call people agents, as a general rule. They are called officers.

      it's a legal distinction -

Operatives are CIA agents. Operators are Delta. What Delta train in is called the Operator Training Course, or OTC for short. Not all Special Operations personnel are Operators.

is right about this, and it's something they had to come up with in the 80s

When I was a young private, my team leader told me one morning that I was assigned to go on a detail to play opfor for some cooler guys. The time of the detail arrived, we were all told to dress in civilian clothes and get on charter buses with the windows blacked out. Some time later, we arrived at a seemingly abandoned airfield. This airfield had a skeleton 787 with the skin removed, another 787 with the skin on and later that day, a working 787 with full crew (believe it was AA). We did a typical crawl, walk, run training with who else than the D-Boys whilst they practiced hostage rescue on airlines.

Super jacked dudes, tall dudes, short dudes, scrawny dudes, guys ranging from mid 20's to late 50's with grey hair. Mostly white guys with a few Hispanic dudes sprinkled in. They shot the frick out of us with sim rounds all day. They had their dogs with muzzles on and told us that if the muzzles fall off to crawl into a ball protecting your face and fingers as best you can and scream "real world real world!"

The culminating exercise was a run portion, we all boarded the working 787 with the flight attendant crew, pilots, everyone. At this point it was late, probably 2 in the morning. We're sitting on this plane for what seems like forever, because we all know what's coming and say what you want, we were all scared even if it was just training.

Every door on the aircraft was breached simultaneously and daisy chains of bangers (6-9 flashbangs all threaded to one fuse) were thrown in and the Belgian malanois were set loose, running down the isles and attacking the terrorists. I was sitting behind one of the designated terrorists who was carrying a glock and as soon as he stood up to engage, he was shot by like 6 different dudes from all angles of the plane. He ended up shooting one in the plate before getting "killed" and the Delta dude called him a homosexual which was funny. One of the coolest memories I have. They really are next level.

Deltas are always attached to glowBlack folk, Hollywood is an outpost for glowies so they can't reveal their parlor tricks.

Navy SEALs work because they usually fight clearly established bad goys, carefully crafted over the decades.

The Deltas in the last arc of Sicario were plain evil and were ready to execute their own fellow countrymen because they're loyal to their glowie handler.

The most underrated goys are the SF/Gay Berets, they actually fight in low intensity conflicts all around the world and do all the jobs both Delta and SEALs do. They have to tard wrangle local forces who may or may not share their mission and objectives.
