With 50% of adults aged 28 and younger living with their parents because their jobs don’t pay enough to cover a modest apartment I’m pretty sure we’re already in a Depression. Welfare propped up with fake currency is the only thing keeping soup kitchen lines down and more people off the streets. We’re looking at complete economic collapse in our very near future once the boomers die off (the last stronghold of the middle class). The multiple millions of immigrants crashing in who need jobs and beds to sleep in are something our country wasn’t coping with in prior economic downturns. We are fricked..

These movies are flopping because they are clearly no-effort garbage films without an iota of creativity behind them. The public recognizes this, even if subconsciously. Don’t let the media write this off as a mere economic problem. This is a creative problem.

I watched those Extraction movies recently, and they really lost some enjoyment ratings from the serious tone they forced upon themselves. You have this guy murdering hundreds of people, and we're supposed to take his emotional moments seriously. That scene man, in the middle of the first movie, where the non-stop action pauses for a brief moment in Hemsworth's buddy's house, and the teen currymuncher is like "I look at my dad at the dinner table and I think he just killed someone else's dad that day and it makes me sick", while sitting right next to this guy who just fricking murdered like 30 dads right in front of the kid that very same day, most of whom were cops just doing their jobs (like it's their fault their boss is corrupt, how are they supposed to know this manhunt is illegitimate?) Like, what the frick is going on here, man? What's this total tonal whiplash? It's so bizarre.

It's true, mass produced garbage is what sells tickets. Minions + spinoffs are for quirky normies, Fast + spinoffs are for people who like cars but can't afford a decent one, Transformers are for people who like explosions and robots, and capeshit is for 'geeks' who don't like to read comics.

I didn't think Avatar 2 was amazing as a film but it's at least nice to see a movie that is both high budget and actually the product of a person's vision rather than that of a boardroom.

Thank God somebody gets it. Every movie is expected to be the biggest hit of all time and gets budgeted as such, which just sets up the studios to lose everything. Why the FRICK was the budget for Elemental 200 million??? How can a romcom about a living puddle possibly recoup that?

People say that Peach is a girlboss because she's shown as ultra competent at the start while Mario isnt.
But when it actually matter (against Bowser for example), it isnt enough and Mario has to bail her out.
FYI, Bowser kidnap Peach, she then try to free herself but fail and Mario comes to save the day.

Bowser is so insanely overpowered he obliterates an entire city just by breathing on it. Only with the star could be possibly be defeated. The whole plot is kind of bizarre, where he goes out of his way to find the star just so that he can place the only thing that could defeat him in front of [anyone willing to activate it] so that they can defeat him It isn't Mario that defeats him, but the star. It could've been literally anyone.

Which is all just to say that, Peach is easily the (second, after Bowser) strongest character in the movie. But she just stands around and does nothing most of the time (who isn't she the one fighting Kong, when she's much better than Mario? etc.), so that the other characters have something to do. And then they give Mario a deus ex machina at the end so that he can have seemed to do something useful. But he didn't earn his victory at all, he was just given it by a power that anyone could've used. It was really lame.

                >It could've been literally anyone.
Yes but that's the entire point of powerup, they're meant to be used by anyone and Mario is not a chosen one, he's a normal human doing his best.
                >Peach is easily the (second, after Bowser) strongest character in the movie. But she just stands around and does nothing most of the time (who isn't she the one fighting Kong, when she's much better than Mario? etc.), so that the other characters have something to do.
That's also what she does in the Mario RPG games, it's literally a kid's movie based on a game that was aimed at a younger audience (for its time).

The games are about Mario rescuing her through his own means, not about [anyone] being able to rescue her or her being able to rescue herself. Then there's no point to anything that happens in the games.

    General reasons:

    Economy.
People are poorer and don’t go to the movies every weekend looking for something to do. Fewer people are dating because they can’t afford dinner and a movie. Fewer people are having kids because they’re poor, so they aren’t taking their kids to see kid films.

    Quality
The hard reality is a lot of the writing for these films is very bad. The previews don’t make sense, aren’t funny, and don’t temp people to go see the films. Visually these films are off putting. This odd CGI style is unappealing, creepy, or just downright ugly. Nobody wants to pay to see a film with ugly people, even if it’s a cartoon.

    Politics
There is a big pushback in America against “woke” messaging. They’re tired of it being shoved in their face or even worse slipped in and they feel tricked. Disney is hurting because a growing number people are boycotting the entire company.

    Reasons for THIS SPECIFIC film:
The previews are weird and don’t make a lot of sense. People are asking “wtf is a kraken” or simply wonder WHY make a kraken a main protagonist. The main character is unattractive. Most of the characters in the film are unattractive. “Teenage” in a title worked in the 80’s/90’s but not anymore. Kids are going straight from 9 to 29 and there is no longer a strong teenage social culture in this country. Malls are empty or filled with gang activity, parks are dangerous, video arcades are extinct…

As long as there is such hostile denial these movies are going to continue to flop. The writing IS quite bad. Undeniably bad. Undeniably worse than just a few years ago. REALLY bad. As for the politics, people use film as an escape from reality and have found themselves captive audience to political messaging one too many times. In fact I think they’re much more put off by it now. That’s what happens when you push too hard. Our economy is terrible, and people (as pointed out by others) are waiting until movies get released to streaming, but if it’s a GOOD film, if it’s something they think they will enjoy, something “safe” that won’t lecture them, something FUN and something UPLIFTING, they’ll buy a ticket.

it's also harder for teenagers to get work, there's older twenty-somethings with nothing but retail experience willing to take shitty jobs due to no alternatives, as well as ESLs who'll also take those jobs and even worse ones
If you're hiring people to cashier or stock shelves, you'd rather go for the 26 year old than the 16 year old
This is has been a problem for most of this decade, but current teens have grown up without expectations placed upon them to get a job at the grocery store or even mcdonalds, they just do nothing and hope they get tiktok famous or whatever

I have a regal subscription, which is 22 dollars a month, and was at the theater and had already gotten a ticket for the blackening through my app for free. But I was really drunk and couldn't figure out where my ticket was so I bought another one. It was 20 bucks. Most people don't have subscriptions and aren't going to drop a 20 for just any movie they're not sure about when they could watch any random shit at home. They only go to sure things like Mario and Spider-Man. We're headed back to the old OLD school release style, where it's only huge releases and they stay in theaters forever. Avatar 2 was in theaters for 6 months and made it to the #3 spot on the all-time box office. They need to only make a few giant spectacles per year and milk them for all they're worth.

Been Neeting for months after getting enough money and holy shit, put on the tv after ages and everything is ugly, black, fat people. Shows? Interracial, more ugly people, cartoons are weird too, netflix and others include white kids always trying to rape some ugly globina, HBO had an ugly black troony being raped (seriously???) etc
Its been only a few months but holy shit it almost killed my libido. Gaming? They are making more and more globinas too, watched the new Fable trailer and holy mother of god
I'm a millennial so i grew up when you could see Pamela Andersoon boobs jiggling, Xena, Buffy, Sailor Moon pretending to mock my sisters girlish cartoon when I was just fapping to the sailor girls, etc
I also tried to put on a zoomette mindset and I dont remember any cute white chad they could fap to
If I have a kid there wont be internet in my house and I will just configure tv/pc to just stream 90s and earlier movies

I really do not understand the need to make diversity tokens look as ugly as possible. I mean look at

The only people looking forward to it where hoping the kraken girl and the mermaid would hook up. The moment this guy showed up in the newer trailers was the moment all interested died.

I'm not even attractive but I don't wish to be "represented" in movies. It's stupidly easy to make minorities cute looking and they simply fail or refuse to do it every single time.

Yeah, I think this is basically it. Everyone is trying to make complex explanations blaming “Wokeness” or movie quality or unoriginality but I think it boils down to theaters becoming obsolete. Hollywood became so focused on spectacle and franchises that audiences will now only go see a handful of movies every year if it constitutes an “event.” Mario, Top Gun, Avatar, etc. Nothing else profits even remotely as much

nah, people stopped going to movies because movies all suck now. you don't wanna have to sit there for 2++ hours watching inane, ugly garbage.

How much is on ticket? Now how much is 2? Or 3? Have you spent close to or up to $100 by now?
Is it a guarantee you're going to like the movie?

      >Movies cost too much to go regularly
More like a decent home theater is more accessible than ever and most people have invested in setups that justify waiting and staying in to watch films instead of going out to be in a theater.

        Anonymous

That's part of it too, but people still turn out for things they want to see in theaters. Top Gun and Avatar were both mediocre, but they had good pedigrees and a movie theater will be a noticeably better venue than the home theater.

As for this movie specifically, I had no idea it even existed. I can't see something that I've never heard of.
