it was originally meant to be just a single season but because of how popular it was Netflix made more. The first season took something like 10 years to write whilst the second one was probably done in only a few months. Everything was set up to end neatly with a cliff-hanger at the end just to generate interest, but since they're heading into season 5 they need to start creating issues and retconning characters to create "drama"
