Why is Han Solo still a smuggler at age 80?

Why is Han Solo still a smuggler at age 80?
You'd think that as republican war hero he could retire or at least be the CEO of a smuggling operation or something.

This Abomination was a group effort care of Disney et al: J.J. was a part of a Committee ,along with K.K., who sought to create a man hating dyke feminist vehicle with a dash of Member berries!

We should have seen the asspull of "SOMEHOW, Palpatine returned" coming from the very first minute of TFA. The signs were all there. A storm trooper that just starts shooting at his buddies without any reluctance whatsoever. A "Republic" that isn't thriving after having defeated the empire. An "imperial remnant" that somehow is even bigger and badder than the empire ever was.

He had to pay off his gambling debts to Lando and pay off the Hutts to not send assassins after him for the Jabba affair. Mon Mothma and Admiral SJW also embezzled his pension.

JJ decided to make everything the same as A New Hope, so he reset Han, because showing Han as a character who has grown is harder than simply recycling the OT.

I hate Abrams far more than Johnson, who at least had the right idea in telling a new story (but executed it terribly). Abrams did far more damage with his fan-pandering memberberries than Johnson's tiresome subversions.

In fact, TFA kills the sequel trilogy by destroying what went before, and nuking Rey and Finn's character arcs, leaving little room for world building or character progression.

Worst sin, making Rey the most broken protagonist of all time!

By doing so it destroys her character arc. She starts off as an interesting character but then JJ has her "bypass the character development" and become alpha by the end of the first movie.
Same with Finn, his arc should have spanned the sequel trilogy, IMHO he should have still been a storm trooper at the end of TFA. But JJ had him kill his own comrades 15 minutes into the movie, leaving his character with nowhere to go.

She Bypassed Everything that would have enamoured her to us! Remember that Gina Davis and Samuel Jackson movie? Had they done that, making her another 'Charlie', he would have bought into the character!

TFA killed the series before it began!

Johnson wanted to do something different, but his intention was also to destroy. So in that sense I guess I agree with you, as it's even more embarrassing the damage JJ did unintentionally with his hackery. Doing something derivative but good is still better than what either JJ or Johnson did, but following up the garbage of TFA with TLJ's shitty edgelord arsonist homosexualry definitely has a poetic justice to it.

Trevorow, judging by his version of TRoS seemed to have a better balance than Abrams and Johnson, who represent the two extremes of the worst trends in modern film-making; referential memberberrying and Edge Lord subversion.

Kennedy allowed JJ and Johnson to do as they pleased. There was clearly no plan. An overall arc should have been mapped out before they even started on TFA, with a structure for the trilogy set out.

You don't understand. This isn't like Marvel. They didn't have tons of comics and years of side media to base anything on. They had to start from scratch and it was very difficult.vsdgs

It was bad then and is bad now. It's an excuse to get Han back into action I guess, and to team up with Rey. Jay Jay Abrahams wanted the save nostalgia route and this was the easiest outline from his POV, to get all the known and beloved characters back.
I'm now totally on board with Rich Evan's verdict regarding the limitation of this franchise. They're going to shoehorn in either Vader, the Force or the Empire in every single SW-related show or movie until the end of time. There will be no escape. I totally expect to see every one of these characters back as CGI creatures. I'm guessing we're ten years away from a full-fledged CGI Luke Skywalker show that takes place between A New Hope and Empire.

What they should have done was ditched the Empire and told a new story within the Star Wars universe, moving forward with a new enemy.

But JJ played it safe, and just recycled A New Hope, crippling the sequel trilogy instantly by locking it into the past.

What gets me is that somehow the Empire got destroyed and the Rebels won in RotJ and yet somehow the Empire is back to being big and powerful and the Rebels are back to being underdogs again, SOMEHOW, it makes no damn sense.

and with the return of the emperor, the ot is in effect entirely meaningless. our heroes accomplished exactly nothing and are worse off at the start of episode 7. in fact the whole skywalker saga is more or less irrelevant now.

It wouldn't have made sense for the Rebellion to just win outright after ROTJ though anyway. The Empire would still be very powerful and assuming their new leadership didn't surrender the war would continue going on for a long time. It's very possible in that timespan the Rebellion suffered significant losses and are the verge of finally losing the war after decades of conflict. There could have been a good storyline to work from there in the hands of better writers

Most of the empire's military is still around, it wouldn't make sense for them to surrender just because Vader and Palpatine died.

But they seem even more powerful than the old Empire, especially with Palpatine's giant underground fleet. How did they get the infrastructure and materials to produce all these ships completely under the nose of the New Republic?
