Basically this. Being genuinely, outstandingly funny is a gift. Most guys think that because people laugh at them sometimes out of social obligation that they are funny. It's like thinking you're a good singer because you sort of sound like it in your head. If you are genuinely funny, or a good singer, you will have had people telling you it constantly all your life.

I just listen'd to him for the first time in years. It was his Kid Rock interview. It was funny because he spent the first two full hours being pretty reasonable and professional. But then they got a couple beers in and he unleashed his inner dumbrofrick. Like where he starts explaining how things work and gets weirdly sanctimonious and is no longer listening to the other person but on his soapbox saying just the lamest midwittiest opinions with passionate intensity. Kid Rock did a pretty good job handling it actually but it was refreshing to see that side of Joe again.
One of my bros is like this. He's a really cool and fun guy, but once he drinks too much he becomes literally insufferable. Constantly repeats himself, talks way too loud, interrupts everyone to repeat himself AGAIN, makes up shit and gets overly aggressive. This has led to him getting his ass kicked by strangers several times already and we also left him alone at places because of it. We told him countless times about this, and now it's at a point where people actually don't want to hang out with him anymore. I feel bad for him, but honestly have my own problems to worry about so there's nothing I can really do.

Because he isn't good at any one thing when it comes to comedy, and has no real skills related to the field. Some of the best comedians IMO have a niche that they are very successful at. It could be doing impersonations, it could be story-telling, it could be noticing funny everyday events that the audience can relate to, etc. Rogan can do none of these things. He is just energetic and forced his way into becoming a comic, in the same way a weightlifter forces himself to eat and hit new PRs.
