This is my opinion on the matter
If Vito Spatafore had been openly gay from the outset then Tony wouldn't have taken issue with him and would have protected him. Especially if he had run meth and gambling in Atlantic City like Vito suggested. But Vito never would have been a made man and after being caught in a lie he had to die because it was a trust issue.
