Anon, I know you aren't this dumb.

I'm more confussed on the implication of that statement. Sailor moon is only like 30 years so what is the cut off there for the idea of it being "classic". Like there's some more contemporary stuff that came out 20 years ago and still isn't referenced in anime. Like at what point does an anime become classic by this definition because the ramification of such a discussion echos out.

            Anonymous

Yeah about 20 years will do it. Star Wars ANH was a classic movie by 1997, Anchorman’s been classic for a bit now at only 19 years old, Oblivion is a classic video game at 17 years old, Dark Souls begins to qualify at merely 12 years old. Yeah sure 20’ll do it

Tokyo Mew Mew is a joke. There's no other magical girl as iconic and recognizable as sailor moon, none of them even come close. Also Fiona literally looks like sailor moon, the original one even has the same bunny ears motif.

doesn't really make sense either because the outfit they gave her isn't exactly practical. That and, you know, it's a dream so does practicality really matter?

Because the network execs will only approve shit they understand, because they assume that if they don't get the reference no one else will. Dragonball and Sailor Moon are the only anime that people of that age group are vaguely aware exists, so a reference to those 'makes sense' to them. They wouldn't approve an explicit Evangelion reference because they've never heard of it, much less a reference to anything remotely obscure or even more recent but still massively popular like Naruto
NARUTO is 'too recent' an anime for these dinosaurs to know exists.

Japan has been copying Sailor Moon for decades to the point that the entire magical girl genre is just Sailor Moon knockoffs.

      Anonymous

It really, really isn't. The closest thing to Sailor Moon in magical girl shows is the precure franchise, which is actually quite different in tone and style. Even ignoring the obvious counterpoint of 'dark magical girl shows', of which there are many, there are still plenty of magical girls that are nothing like Sailor Moon.

        Anonymous

The basics and themes and tropes are still there. You can pretend it's different but they all have the same DNA. That's all anime and manga is. They see one thing that's popular and then dozens of copies come out until people get tired. At best they'll put their own spin on it. At worst it's so shameless you'd think a lawsuit was coming.

I'm talking about the magical girl genre that is nothing but cute girls spending a minute every episode in stock henshin sequences to be clothed in frilly dresses and announce their attacks in their never ending battle against generic forces of evil as they stand up for love and humanity. This is just another case of people whining about a western series doing what Japan has done nonstop for decades.

The first arc of the show is Sakura and her friends tracking down magical forces that have been accidentally released into the world. She usually finds them causing some kind of problem, has to puzzle out how to get them under control or beat them, and then she adds them to her collection. Which means that, almost every episode, Sakura gets a new power, and best of all its stuff that she actually remembers she has in future episodes. The cards are explicitly not evil, and in fact most of them end up on friendly terms with her after she has collected them and will even activate themselves in her defense sometimes without her even asking them to.

The second arc of the show seems to have an evil wizard thing going on causing trouble for her specifically, but really he's just a sort of magical failsafe for anyone who inherits the cards that challenges them to actually use the magic and make it their own. For most of the show she is basically just borrowing the magic of a previous wizard, but by the end of the second arc she is a legitimate magical apprentice and can even make new cards of her own.

So you get to the end of the show and there's just... no actual villains in it. Problems that she has to solve, but no bad guys. Its actually kind of unique in that regard.

at least with Fionna it's not just a cheap surface level reference, Natasha Allegri had Usagi as one of Fionna's primary influences from basically the day she figured out Fionna's standard design back in those mystical days when she and a bunch of other Adventure Time & Steven Universe crew members would visit Cinemaphile

            >That's just PPGZ
not really, PPGZ was actually pretty shit in the action department

This is just spastic. They spin and throw lights at it and the monster no-sells every attack. So much wasted budget on motion with no pay off. Their attacks look like they're shining a flashlight at it.

Even pro-wrestlers know of your character supposedly doesn't feel pain, you still have to react to the hit like you were hit.

Its a crossover movie, anon. The whole point is that each group and character is doing their big this-ends-the-battle special move, and none of them hurt it. Its a stakes-raising sequence.

              Anonymous

They don't look like "this ends the battle" moves. It looks like a colored light and like the monster is "no-selling" it. Not "it's immune". I mean it looks like the attacks don't do anything and the monster is a bad actor who doesn't know he's supposed to at least cover his eyes so the light doesn't bother them.

Is this shit supposed to look impressive or something? It's just the same squiggly lines and nausea-inducing spastic animation I've seen in countless other le sakoog webms spammed on this board by moronic weebs, they all look the same by this point. I'm also willing to bet that action scenes like this are less than 1% of the show's runtime, and the rest of it consists of slow pans on the backgrounds, close-ups of the girls' faces with their mouths flapping like a fish for 5 minutes straight and their oversized eyeballs getting a seizure whenever something shocking happens, and other bullshit ""animation"" shortcuts meant to distract from the fact that like every other Jap cartoon it's nothing more than a glorified slideshow.

No, he's right. Just because anime has upskirts doesn't mean it's good. I'm not going to say XJ-9 is the pinnacle of animation but at least when she shot something to establish shooting wouldn't work, the huge waste of time was done with comedic timing instead of asking you to take it dead seriously.

      Anonymous

      >comedic timing instead of asking you to take it dead seriously.
You don't say. Man 99% of all cartoons are comedies of course she did with a comedic timing but her cartoon is shit. Characters from precure have more development in 1 episode than jenny has in her whole show.

        Anonymous

I kind of doubt that. If you want to establish that this blob is very strong, then it could just flatten one of the girls. They all look the same and their attacks are different colored lights, the show can probably go on.

Unless you want to say we should take the anime seriously, but not THAT seriously because it's not some kind of drama or commentary on the brutality of conflict or whatever.

Like at its core, you know the girls will all prevail and chirp at a high cutesy pitch and eat cakes.

          >They all look the same
The girls? Not in the slightest, are you color blind? Anyways I don't care about that specific scene since I haven't watched that movie but I did watch some of the precure series and I had an easy time taking them serious.

          Anonymous

At this point do you even have a stance beyond "I don't like THING and I'll switch to whatever argument I need to to keep being mad about it?" You are all over the place. You can't decide whether you are upset about the speed of the animation, or the lack of comedic timing in a non-comedic scene, or the bright colors, or a completely unrelated slice of life moe show.
You are just... generically upset. Nondescriptly mad. Someone cast as an extra told to yell upset-sounding things in the background.

            Anonymous

There is more than one anon in the thread saying the posted animation doesn't look that good.

            >They all look the same
The girls? Not in the slightest, are you color blind? Anyways I don't care about that specific scene since I haven't watched that movie but I did watch some of the precure series and I had an easy time taking them serious.

I can't really speak about the maturity of this show since I haven't watched it, but the webm posted doesn't scream "wow such high stakes". It looks like generic anime stuff and I guess at best they're using a bunch of "abilities" which at this point is just saying, "remember this? This ability is powerful but it doesn't work on this nondescript shadow creature so you know it's bad!"

To me it just looks like there's a lot of motion, and then some neon flashlights get shined on the thing, and I'm not thinking this show is special somehow.

You know in Japan they generally view this stuff as being for kids, right? Like this is Cinemaphile, you can pike kid's cartoons, but pets not pretend every monster of the week cartoon is someone's magnum opus.

Cure Black and Cure White would be super easy to reference, as the first two precures of the first season!

the theme song is catchy and has nice action moments that can be referenced.

For all the cartoon lesbians, the first season has girls that can only transform while holding hands, so they can reference parts from that scene if they want to.

I heard Precure's english dubs didn't get very popular though (there was that Canadian dub in the 2000s, and Glitter Force which existing fans are mixed about, and it's only on a streaming service), so the series didn't really get picked up in popularity in the anglosphere.
