The use of a number and "trilogy" isn't the same at all.
FF 7 means it's the 7th main entry of a series. (you can't make 7 games all called 'Final Fantasy' too)
Trilogy means 3 works related to each others, a story that runs in 3 works, etc...
I'll give, I'm not really invested in this, but if you want my honest thoughts, I think it's just the robot designs, toy line, and maybe themes or similar concepts between shows. They do this a lot with Japanese media (I don't think the "Toei Fushigi Comedy Series" is much of a series either, for example) and I think it's mostly a marketing gimmick. I was under the impression most people understood this.

For a western (literally) example see the "Dollars Trilogy"...
