>That doesn't happen in the image you posted, I think they dropped a bomb
It is smokebending tho. How else would you explain smoke moving the way it does after Azula releases it?
>arrow pointing at the cultist
Actually, they are former, abused asylum inmates who Azula convinced to join her terrorist cell by lying to them and telling them they would be helping the Fire Nation's downtoddern.
Firebenders if you pay attention unironically don't seem to bend fire, they bend heat or excite matter somehow, this is actually pretty consistent as far back as the original ATLA with Sparky Sparky Boom Man and Lightning Bending. So in theory, they're not bending the smoke, they're bending the heat *in* the smoke to control the smoke like how Toph's metal bending doesn't actually bend the metal but the impurities and earth in the metal.
It is but it's still clearly a thing. It's the only thing that explains so much shit they do and it lines up damn near perfectly with whatever the frick Tooph was doing.
Actually it sounds pretty sound; it might be bullshit, but it's clever bullshit, the kind that the makers tend to throw to cast aspersion.

Good shit anon.

It actually doesn't look like it's moving all that much; bender can make animals out of their elements, so It could be explained away fairly easily with some bull about stuff to burn under the cape or the design of the thing to only allow the smoke to go in one direction. After that smokes mostly goes through the ground until it hits something.
Let us say, it's not the greatest bullshit in a comic, though I like the other anon's heat in smoke explanation, like slightly pushing it around a bit.
It’s not bullshit at all imo. People sometimes say firebenders don’t have a source for their element, but they do, they make fire from the heat and light around them. That’s why Zuko can’t firebend in the arctic at night, but can at day. And why the boiling rock coolers prevent anyone firebending. You can 100% start fires where it’s cold, but firebenders need a source of light/heat to pull it from, they’re not actually “burning”, just pushing/pulling heat.
>so It could be explained away fairly easily with some bull about stuff to burn under the cape or the design of the thing to only allow the smoke to go in one direction.
I thought that to be the case, but Azula isn't wearing a contraption or a belt filled with smoke bombs or material under her cloak.
>Let us say, it's not the greatest bullshit in a comic, though I like the other anon's heat in smoke explanation, like slightly pushing it around a bit.
Yeah, but still runs into the problem of Azula and her goons being able to do psychic firebending, and in Azula case, while fire or lightningbending. Cause how do you explain shit like Azula producing smoke while producing lightning with both hands?
Azula was wanked in the show but the comics take it a step further.
>Azula was wanked in the show but the comics take it a step further.
Azula in the show was OP and ultimately had to go mad to lose, but she still suffered set-backs and is outmatched by Aang and Katara bending wise. In the comics, she is strong enough with enough hax to the point that you ask why doesn't she stop with the games and kill everyone in her way. It is bad writing, even if they try justifying it with eugenics, and part of the reason why they should retcon the comics, insted of keeping it canon with Avatar Studios.
Airbending would be to just fricking bend the air around the smoke to move the smoke, that's the same fricking thing at its core just doing it a different way.
If firebenders can create fire by igniting their chi, it makes sense they can emit smoke the same way. It's not clear from the two pages posted whether they can actually control the smoke or just shoot it in the direction they want.
It makes a lot more sense when you remember bending is literal magic that came from supernatural turtles. Fire elementals being able to control smoke is pretty common.
Zuko makes smoke when he breathes fire in The Waterbending Scroll, Aang makes smoke when he tries firebending at the start of The Firebending Masters, one of the Fire Nation guards makes smoke when he tries firebending at the start of the elcipse, and Kyoshi made smoke the first time she tried firebending. Smokebending is a sub-element of firebending, which is magic-based and not based on science, even if the comics implemenation of it is ass.
>Good genetics AND good training
Yeah, but if that where the case, Katara, Toph, and Zuko would be much closer to her in terms of bending strength than they are after the comics. And this doesn't even get into her other skills. If she didn't go insane and remain that way, as well as be conflicted, she wouldn't lose, which you can't say for other characters other than Aang.
some things can be controlled by either bender
fire + air = smoke
earth + water = mud
water + air = steam
earth + fire = lava
trust me, got level 99 runecrafting and skill cape
Smokebending works due to a chi imbalance as lightningbending works through separating Yin and Yang energy then bringing them together in a lightning strike. I feel like Smokebending would be the work of a "cooler" chi energy then Fire Nation are comfortable in using.

This sounds really stupid.

I mean she is a eugenics baby wunderkind.

That's stupid. Smokebending should be an airbending specialty and it certainly should be useless against other airbenders

Smoke is specifically made from a composite burning. When firebenders make fire there's no smoke because only the air is burning.
They can if they choose to, apparently.
What episode is that from?
The episode with the pirates and the waterbending scroll.
There is smoke occasionally. They just generally don't bother to animate it.
Apparently in the avatar universe, fire, smoke, and lightning are similar enough that they can be absorbed and released by firebenders.
That is just heatbending. It is supposed to be invisible in-universe just like airbending is. They just made it visible for the audience's benefit.
Firebenders are actually Charged Ion Plasma benders, they just don’t have a word for that yet and it looks like fire
It makes a lot more sense when you remember bending is literal magic that came from supernatural turtles. Fire elementals being able to control smoke is pretty common.
I get "smokebending" now that I've thought about it for a little while, but wouldn't it be more aptly named "emberbending?"
So what you’re saying is smokebending is a thing?
How is /co going to react when Azula smokebends someone to death like Zaheer airbended the Earth Queen to death?
I doubt anyone on Cinemaphile or anywhere else really gives a shit about the Avatar comics
>Monkey Feathers
Is that the G rated way of saying Mother Fricker?
Yes and now I’m gonna start using it
>Is that the G rated way of saying Mother Fricker?
Yes.
Why is Azula so overpowered? It can’t just be training?
Good genetics AND good training
>Good genetics AND good training

Why do people give a frick about the comics?
why not?

So, how do anons think Azula will die?
Struck by lightning. Dramatic irony since lightning was one of her go to moves
