My gf is a huge fan so I've been forced to listen to a lot of her music. She has some good songs but I don't understand her massive popularity either. If I had to guess, it's a lowest common denominator thing. Taylor is very vanilla, she makes acceptably good music that is very inoffensive, very easy to listen to. There's nothing divise or offputting about her style or lyrics or personal life.
Everything about her is carefully crafted to appeal to the widest possible audience. Innovative and original art alienates people and she's done an impressive job of striking a balance between good but not too good, interesting but not too interesting.
This. She's manufactured to appeal to literally 50% of the population.

Okay, I'm sure she is. I happen to be a fan of plenty of white and black artists. And I'm white. I dont think color matters. It's about the quality of the song, there lyrics and the personality of the artist themselves. Of course they have to have a good voice, but race shouldn't matter. I also don't get the hype. She has a mediocre voice and her songs are not the best influence for younger teenage girls. What is she teaching them, get in a relationship, break up and make money off of them? The only one I found to be worse than swift with the actual music was Marina, who apparently is even more of a narcissist. All of Taylor's music is just "WAAAAH my boyfriend isn't perfect enough despite being some world famous gigachad" or "WAAAAH you shouldn't have broken up with me even though it was obviously my fault, having 17 boyfriends in the last 15 years."
