Why didn't more teen heroes become mainstream? Surely more relatable to the audience that way

Because his a story of personal tragedy brought upon by human hubris that resulted in a harsh lesson that drove him to become a better person. He is in many ways a reflection of both our worst and best aspects and how we can over come the former to always strive for the latter. His introduction and origin are superbly told and he has had some of the best comic runs of all time.

Like Batman, sustained decades of adaptations and merchandise, a premise that's simple to explain, cool costume, distinctive personality, and memorable supporting cast and villains.

Successive generations have grown up knowing all about Spider-Man and Batman without ever reading comics because of those decades of adaptations.

He’s basically an improved version of Superman.
    >Strong but not overpowered
    >Swinging is more unique than flying
    >Younger and more relatable
    >Had to learn to become a Hero through consequences rather than naturally being good.
