Why is this hyped as the greatest comic book of all time?

Why is this hyped as the greatest comic book of all time?
I read it and while I was engaged throughout the story it's nothing too extraordinary
A solid 7/10
Do I not get it because I'm not an American or do other Cinemaphile anons feel the same?

I also didn't like it that much. I was looking for comic books that are well written and this being on some Top 100 Books list (TIME?), was an obvious thing to check out.
I've also tried The Dark Knight Returns, Sandman and Hellblazer, from among those comics, which are supposed to have higher literary merit, but none of them blew me away, though Gaiman's work seemed most consistently good.

Because that’s all it is, a competent comic.

TDKR is much better than any of the four listed ITT

DKR has a better emotional and humanistic core. None of the british writers were good at writing human beings. I will take the page of the single mom that gets killed by a bomb in DKR over any character writing in Watchmen or Sandman.

          >I didn't read Watchmen and the movie didn't have the man and the boy at the news stand segments so they don't exist
          Cool story bro

Conceptually it's good but they feel like stock characters. It feels like Moore knows NYC primarily from media he onsumed than actually knowing it. The two Bernards might as well be 70's topical sitcom characters for all the depth they have.

It's one of the very few 10/10 comics out of the thousands I've read. More than anything, it sits comfortably at the top for a range of readers while dealing with the largest genre in the medium here in the US.
While it may not be THE best, it's a good pick for the best.
I suggest you read it again at a later date, because it wasn't until the 2nd and 3rd reads that I really saw how great it is.

I find Sandman to be inconsistent in quality. Hellblazer too.

Watchmen is significantly better and more humanistic than TDKR, and I love TDKR. I'd even say it's #2 to Watchmen's #1.
TDKR never made me sad, while Watchmen is pretty devastating.

The time also how it was piece together, might not be the greatest but it's a wonderfully crafted comic, this book would be nothing without Gibbons forgotten like other books similar to it such as The One.

Because everything you've read that came after was influenced by it. It's hard to understand the context for how revolutionary it was when you've grown up reading stuff that it set the groundwork for. It's like looking at the invention of the wheel and going 'so what, my car has four of those.'

Yeah, kind of like Citizen Kane or Star Wars - if you don't know their context it's hard to understand why they are considered so ground breaking.

Yeah like when I saw Blade Runner, I like it and get why it's so beloved but like stuff inspired by it better.

Because everything is well done. Written more like literature with alot of details.

It has been a long time since I have seen this format. Good work.

I created this pic two years ago and post it on a regular base.
This format was well done. Alittle bit open to interpretation but quick to understand the notion.

Terrible as expected. It had a Ditko expy just to shit on him and also Frank Miller by his own name for some reason.

I feel like I'm going insane because this comic is legitimately one of the very few that could be considered 'literature' and that's not even being pretentious. It is genuinely heads and shoulders above most other comics, superhero or otherwise, AND manga.

Watchmen is one of those books you can read, re-read, then re-read again and catch neat little details you missed the last time.

I'd love to see more of the Pax Americana world. Shit was interesting as frick.

There's the fact that it influenced everything after it, for better or worse, but beyond that it's easily one of the densest comics ever created. It's filled to the brim with informative set details, symbolism in framing and composition, mirrored panels and action - the script for a single page of the comic is like three pages of details.

You also did yourself a disservice if you didn't read the Black Freighter or the in-universe rags Moore put alongside the main story.

If you're totally ignorant of American history then some parts may go over your head

      >one of the densest comics ever created
Wouldn't a "where is waldo" type of comic be way more dense than watchmen?

    >Why is this hyped as the greatest comic book of all time?

Because 99% of American comics are subpar.

It's on the TIME list because Time-Warner owns DC, though it's not like any Marvel comic is a contender. It could have been something like Maus or Jimmy Corrigan (both of which are in TIME's top 10 graphic novels list, though so is Watchmen). It's odd that Sandman wasn't picked.
Still, it is a great comic book, and anyone that says otherwise doesn't understand or care about the medium.
