Yea they're a reasonably interesting bunch.
Patlabor is still my go-to for character driven mecha though, partly because I like my feisty redheads to not be total rat bastards but also because the designs are much more expressive and visually distinct.
Patlabor is unique partly for being like, the last major franchise created before the collapse of the End Of History, it's probably the most recent piece of media to display that utopian ideal without any hint of irony, and then Oshii critiques it brilliantly in Patlabor 2, they had their cake and ate it *and* pulled it off
not a far comparison. Eva today is a 30 year old legacy franchise with massive name recognition
If this were not the case and the original anime released today as a product completely unknown to the world, I think it would be seen as the cookie cutter work that it is
all 3 are much older and are no longer as culturally relevant, none of them took off in the west to anywhere near the extent of Eva, none of them have put out a great showing recently. Also the most recent Eva movie had like an entire decade worth of hype and anticipation as not only the finale of the Rebuilds but the finale of Evangelion as a franchise. Incredibly risky move. You don't see any of the three you mentioned taking 15 years to release four movies.

Addressed this in yesterday's thread. Gundam is the most accessible and popular mecha show. There is also Evangelion but Gundam has more appeal to /m/ due to its focus on war, history, ideology, and machine porn. Macross is not easily available to watch on any streaming service and there isn't any new stuff going on in the franchise. Also, the mechs look too much like transformers, which are ridiculed here in the West and is a turnoff. Super robot shows like Mazinger also face a similar obstacle in that Americans have been primed to dislike it due to the stigmatization of transformers and power rangers.

it would only be seen as cookie cutter because a lot of shows follow its formula to this day
eva isn't some supergenius work of art (as some would have you believe) but it did impact the industry/genre trends
your argument is kind of absurd or at best just underinformed
Eva is an extremely derivative work. It was cookie cutter when it was released. About the only thing that distinguishes it from stuff like Mazinger is that it makes Tominoesque character neuroses into basically the entire story.
Its most meaningful contribution is proving the success of late night anime.
I will never understand the hate that /m/ has for Evangelion, sure, the fans are morons that overhype it and try to spin it as some high artistic masterpiece and troons flock to it, but cutting off the brainless fanbase it's still an objectively good show full with the passion from the guys at Gainax, which at that time where still Otaku that filled the entire thing with their love for Ultraman, Urusei Yatsura, Go Nagai and other olden properties
The Rebuilds are soulless cashgrabs that Anno made to appease to the moronic pseudo-intellectual crowd though
I've explained it many times; it's a character oriented show where every major character is thoroughly unlikeable. If I wanted to watch a reference laden Hideaki Anno work, Gunbuster is both far better and far shorter.
Because Zeta's shitty character writing is largely relegated to side characters like the women bar Haman and Four, and villains like Scirocco. These are ones that are less crucial to the plot and take up less time than the leads like Kamille, Amuro and Char. Even as someone who likes Shinji, Asuka and Rei - I've got to admit that they're not going to be everybody's cup of tea and when it's the main cast you have an issue with it's suddenly much worse than some underbaked villains and Tomino's weird issues writing women.
IDK, too many of them tend to be classic satellite characters, ones who's motives revolve far too much around others for them to be interesting on their own. The few that aren't or are justifiably so like Haman and Four are quite interesting, but I don't know enough female political leaders or mentally damaged soldiers to comment on their realism.
What I can say, though, is that if Reccoa represents a realistic average woman to you, is ro get as far away from the women in your life as possible.

I'd say it is, when the complaint is they are boring because they have nothing really going on themselves. A character with no real substance of their own who really only matters in how they affect another cannot really be called a well-written character because they have nothing to be written well about.

Not necessarily true
If a type of person (a woman perhaps) is, to quote you, a person "A character with no real substance of their own who really only matters in how they affect another", and that person is depicted in such a manner in a fictional work, does that make the writing bad? To say yes would contradict your previous statements concerning realism.
Regardless, the contention is whether Tomino has "issues" writing women, the complaint about anything being "boring" is also erroneous as that's another subjective, irrational non-argument.

Nobody in real life is a "supporting character". They may be perceived as such by others and maybe even by the majority of them, but they will have a personal life, preferences, outlook, etc.
When a writer decides that a person is now a satellite character towards another it is because they do not care for that satellite character and simply need someone for the structure of the plot. It's by no means bad overall writing - you're probably going to end up writing these types of characters no matter what you make - but it would make that specific character unrealistically shallow.
Zeta Gundam has flat female characters for the most part simply because most of them aren't important to the plot. It's not bad per se, but nobody is ever really a satellite character IRL, so it would be unrealistic.
I don't think these types of characters are emblematic of the weird stuff with women in Tomino stuff, if you want an example of that, look at Reccoa's weird arc towards the latter part of Zeta

>Inane time-wasting question starting with the word "why" that requires the absolute minimum of critical thinking skills to answer
Chat GPT thread or do all Discord shitposters use the same spam template?
Honestly? Because a lot of people watched it at the exact right time in their life, when they were depressed teens that the world just didn't "get". I think there's a definite correlation between the age you first saw Eva at and whether you relate to Shinji or hate him (sometimes both)
This is probably true for.... most stuff, honestly.
When you're a teenager it's when your brain can absorb AND process stuff the most. You still have some shades of purity from childhood, but also know about how real life isn't a fairy tale, so you're in between. So it applies to anything: video games, music, movies, people.
When you become an adult you have to make an extra effort to enjoy things, and it's almost always kind of ironically unless it's non-fiction stuff, and even then.
I get what you mean but it still applies to everything, when you're a teen, the stuff you like is on a deeper level than stuff you like as an adult (new stuff you discover as an adult).
Also, I know this is controversial, but Shinji isn't as angsty as memes make him out to be.
At worst, Shinji is depressive, and at best, he's a normal kid wanting to make friends (and succeeding at it!), he's a bit shy and introvert, but he still makes an effort and befriends Touji and Kensuke, he also takes Touji's punch at first like a man and doesn't cry or run away or anything. He also likes to cook for his friends, is well kept and clean in general, and he even gets wienery once he really gets the hang of piloting Evas, he's not competitive at all, like Asuka is, but when Misato tells him he's "Number 1" in sync ratio, he does get wienery and kind of flaunts it in Asuka's face.... ironically, in that very same episode, he gets sucked into a dimensional void angel, and the scene you posted a screenshot of happens, but remember that he is going through very paranormal, mind-breaking shit.
People often associate Shinji with "get in the robot shinji!" and Shinji being suicidal, but that's in EoE, once he's seen some footage.
I think Shinji is unfairly judged as an angsty teen without taking into account all the traumatic shit he's been through. If not for the fact he had to experience things such as losing his human form and having his soul wander inside a giant god-like being, or having a friend of him turn out to be an angel and having to kill him, he'd be a pretty normal kid. Much better than many of us here, I'm sure.
It has the occasionally well animated scene and cute girls. Helped by the perception that its "not like other Mecha anime" spread by people who know nothing about the genre.
What I want to know is why people think its influential? The show itself is highly derivative and pretty much no anime draws much from it aside from the occasional aesthetic choice like in Nadesco or RahXephon. 99% of the time when someone calls something an "eva ripoff" its actually blatantly copy pasting some older anime's plot (RahXephon, ZoE1, Pacific Rim). The most "influential" thing it did was continue to push the industry toward using young girls to sell (ironically something Anno was likely pushing against by making Rei and Asuka suffer so much).
he's right though
a post like yours simply indicates you haven't seen enough of the genre to understand why you're wrong
either that or you're too autstic (or simply too hard-headedly against liking popular things) to appreciate the truth
either way it's a waste of breath to really engage with you
to be clear: this post is "not an argument," i'm not providing any examples, i'm not refuting your points. you can't play chess with a pigeon
It's good. The characters are interesting and varied, it still looks really good, the OST rules, the fights are unique, the mystery is intriguing, the girls are cute, etc etc etc
Kino new wave aesthetics + some of the best cinematography and editing of any anime up to that point + compelling depiction of the effect of unchecked generational trauma on society in a country wracked by it makes it subconsciously relatable to a great many (could go for USA as well as Japan)
Gen X'ers declared "EVANGELION IS OUR GUNDAM" and talked and talked about it, even though it was fairly standard and mediocre at times, Gen X'ers, American and Japanese, gave it so much word of mouth that it became bigger than it deserved to be. Millenials believed Gen X'ers bullshit about how it was deep and rewrote the definition of anime, so it got this huge following on generations of hype and bullshit.
The only thing I like about EVA is the machinery (catapults, airplanes, NERV underground base, Tokyo 3 infrastructure) and the Giant Robot vs Giant Monster showdown. I always skip the drama.
-Came out at the right time for the English speaking anime fandom
-The main theme is about the difficulty but the importance of human connection. The whole Hedgehog's Dilemma thing. That's something I'm willing to bet most people have dealt with at some point at their time, especially in as socially repressed a society as Japan.
-Rei and Asuka really caught on as the new faces of character archetypes
-I want to see Kaworu and Shinji have gay sex
-Cool mecha designs
Because it's peak.
Without context You think it's just a show about piloting mechs and saving the world but when you realize it goes far more deeper with it's depressing characters and existentialism that to me is where the show gets it's reputation from and yes the soundtrack is beyond excellent and the art direction is top notch though you have to deal with a bunch of freeze frames that save the budget. Not a perfect show but the EOE is where it's a true masterpiece.
It's basically a harem anime but with violence, psychological trauma, and pseudo-religious nonsense. And like any harem anime, the most popular point of discussion has always been which chick you would have banged if you had been the MC.
It's peak midwit slop. >mechs and angels have boring designs so low iqs don't enjoy it >has unnecessary and boring 2deep4u drama revolving around teenage kids and no characters actually learn or improve so high iqs won't enjoy
Is it?
Nice animation, sleek designs, good OST.

I don't mean that, I mean that the shit Shinji goes on about in the show, was all stuff the teens watching could relate to personally.
He's called angsty by people who first saw Eva in their 20s and literally could not relate to being a hormonal teen anymore.
Because direction was certainly stellar for the time.
Like Oshii said, NGE was all about design and mood maestria.
The most "influential" thing it did was continue to push the industry toward using young girls to sell (ironically something Anno was likely pushing against by making Rei and Asuka suffer so much).
>pretty much no anime draws much from it
Watch more anime mate.
>nu uh
ok buddy
he's right though
a post like yours simply indicates you haven't seen enough of the genre to understand why you're wrong
either that or you're too autstic (or simply too hard-headedly against liking popular things) to appreciate the truth
either way it's a waste of breath to really engage with you
to be clear: this post is "not an argument," i'm not providing any examples, i'm not refuting your points. you can't play chess with a pigeon
because people have shit taste
It's good. The characters are interesting and varied, it still looks really good, the OST rules, the fights are unique, the mystery is intriguing, the girls are cute, etc etc etc
but anon, you can't like it because everything Eva does was already done by Ultraman, Devilman and Ideon!
The characters. I know not all of you have the ability to empathize but if you can there are a lot of things to like in evangelion.
How is Eva like Ideon? Eva was the best animated mecha show while Ideon has shit animation (source: Hideaki Anno)
Kino new wave aesthetics + some of the best cinematography and editing of any anime up to that point + compelling depiction of the effect of unchecked generational trauma on society in a country wracked by it makes it subconsciously relatable to a great many (could go for USA as well as Japan)
Frick off tourist.
cool mech cool music cool animation
i didnt care for the characters personally
Gen X'ers declared "EVANGELION IS OUR GUNDAM" and talked and talked about it, even though it was fairly standard and mediocre at times, Gen X'ers, American and Japanese, gave it so much word of mouth that it became bigger than it deserved to be. Millenials believed Gen X'ers bullshit about how it was deep and rewrote the definition of anime, so it got this huge following on generations of hype and bullshit.
Man zoomer revisionism is something else.
Why are you still baiting with NGE in 2023?
You're right
NGE should be forgotten
and yet, you have it rent free
The only thing I like about EVA is the machinery (catapults, airplanes, NERV underground base, Tokyo 3 infrastructure) and the Giant Robot vs Giant Monster showdown. I always skip the drama.
The buildings noving underground were inspired by a Genndy Anderson show. https://youtu.be/LB12HNNDDcc?si=AmvyJ5NqYg3s-4dP
Buildings moving is a scifi staple, it's like Macross or Megazone 23 but locally.
It's obscene in Shin Ultra.
I could be quoting from this interview all day long:

Because of Asuka's looks and attitude

Oh, and we don't sign our posts here.
You can stop forcing that shit now.
What do they smell like, anons?
The success of the live action One Piece on Netflix brings us closer to the inevitable live action Evangelion.
Please don't.
Their moms are hotter.

Helps that it starts as a monster of the week kind of show, but it's obvious it's much more than that.
Unlike other mecha it's about the characters & plot and not just big robot punch fights
Two reasons both of which are mentally ill 14 year olds that generations of Otaku now want to put their penises in.
Rei is for Asuka, and vice versa.
Two iconic girls
The Betty and Veronica of anime. Who else comes close?
Minmay & Misa
Because it's peak.
Without context You think it's just a show about piloting mechs and saving the world but when you realize it goes far more deeper with it's depressing characters and existentialism that to me is where the show gets it's reputation from and yes the soundtrack is beyond excellent and the art direction is top notch though you have to deal with a bunch of freeze frames that save the budget. Not a perfect show but the EOE is where it's a true masterpiece.
Even before I watched I thoughy something was off about the mechs. Behaved more like monsters, moved somewhat organically, and that roar.
NGE's graphic design is such kino
had to look this up to see if it was an ancient copypasta of some sort
you write like a 14 year old ESL
The Japanese ads for these aired late at night
Woe for anyone who had their tvs on while they were asleep
this one's better
Frick, I want that poster.
I remember I printed that and got a pixelated A4 mini-poster I put up on my fridge back in 1999 or so.
It's basically a harem anime but with violence, psychological trauma, and pseudo-religious nonsense. And like any harem anime, the most popular point of discussion has always been which chick you would have banged if you had been the MC.
The holy trinity of mecha kino:
Kinogelion
Kino Star Stories
Gundam Sentikinol
Frick off tourist.
why wouldn't it be popular?
It's thought provoking.
>muh deconstruction
It's peak midwit slop.
>mechs and angels have boring designs so low iqs don't enjoy it
>has unnecessary and boring 2deep4u drama revolving around teenage kids and no characters actually learn or improve so high iqs won't enjoy
>using racial epithets
>calling anyone midwit
>calling people Black folk makes me cry
>not stupid btw 🙂
