Why is Trey Parker like this?
This episode is considered the greatest South Park episode ever by a lot of people, yet he thought it would ruin the show's reputation forever?

didn't everyone on the simpsons from writers to actors all hate the monorail episode?
I don't like it either.
Which is funny because Conan O’Brien wrote it and that is his magnum opus for the show. I mean he performed it live in person with a whole back-up dancers and a set too
How sure are we this is even really true, or accurately reported?
>he performed it live in person with a whole back-up dancers and a set too
what the frick
But it’s so versatile
What episode is this? I can't find it on YouTube.
no, that sounds like something a Cinemaphile chud would make up
I'm pretty sure Conan tells a story of pitching 3 different episodes in one sitting (one of them being the Monorail one) and all of them getting a great reception overall, I think they were just slightly worried about the realism of Leonard Nimoy literally beaming away at the end.
In terms of the S2-8 'Golden Era' the real controversial ones among the staff were Krusty Gets Kancelled and A Star is Burns.
>, I think they were just slightly worried about the realism of Leonard Nimoy literally beaming away at the end.
Jesus Christ they were precious about that show.
>slightly worried about the realism of Leonard Nimoy literally beaming away at the end.
That's a weird hangup from the show that had Ozzie Smith fall into an extradimensional portal as a key plot point the year earlier.
Episodes arent necesarily aired in the order they are written/produced.
Stupid.
Based on their production codes Homer at the Bat was produced before Monorail.
moron.
Matt Groening said the "I call the big one Bitey." line one of his favourite jokes of that season.
Personally I prefer "I shouldn't have stopped for that haircut."
for me its
>there he is, seat 3F
You are thinking of Homer at the Bat. Writers/producers didn't like having so many athletes on the show.
Why is a former theatre kid overdramatic?
Machinima was pretty new to the mainstream at the time, he probably didn't understand how people would react to that.
That and there was tons of it in that episode. If it was bad, there was no way the audience could ignore it.
Holy mother of autism, no one cared about that. Parker was already starting to get out of touch.
Frick, I hate gamers
Because it was basically an ad for WoW
By insinuating people who play it are fat pimply morons?
The episode is absolute dogshit. Humor vacuum where the only joke is that they play a video. The only reason morons like the episode is because they lose their minds when seeing video game footage on tv, just like that one shitty movie where an autistic kid goes to a Mario tournament.
This episode is the downfall of South Park. This is the actual point they realized they can just phone it in. They made an episode so bad Trey Parker wanted to kill himself and the reception was so good it just makes you say frick it, this is the new standard
Please. The parts with Randy Marsh were funny.
Hey now! The girl in The Wizard was also pretty cute.
Shut up, turd. This scene is possibly the funniest shit I've ever seen on television. I literally screamed with laughter at the time.
>stan just disappears while cartman is shitting
What were they thinking?
THE FRICK
*Kyle
he should be playing Mafia 3
You are correct. It lived entirely on the novelty of people recognising WoW
No it was clearly the contrast between the gravity and dedication displayed by all characters and the pointless stupid goal
Exact same plot from the Towelie episode btw but that's ok
>picrel is my honest opinion to that
This is the best line delivery in the whole show
Every episode with a montage is S tier
The premise of the episode is everyone takes a video game too seriously yes, but you haven't actually described any of the jokes.
Whats Matt's official reason for dropping out of college? Is he still or we pretending he's above it all and not a total moron (which he is)
it's perfectly normal for artists to be insecure about their work, but to have a manic episode like that at that point in his career is embarrassing
I''ve had an artist tell me I had no empathy for saying I liked his art
I can't believe he would say that and then go on to make basically every single episode from season 11 to now.
Does this guy still not understand how the last 14 seasons of South Park are terrible, and far worse than the first 3 seasons he "hates"?
Fricking this. The show became preachy as all hell, and tame overall as well
That’s ironic because those are the best seasons, when the show was just stupid and funny.
The stress of doing these in a week probably got to him
He doesn't have to do them in a week, he chooses to do them so he can comment on contemporary events and then the show ages like shit
I think it’s more that he knows that he can do them in a week. The season is extreme highs and lows as they’re working around the clock with their asses against the wall, it ends, and they think, “let’s not do that shit anymore.” But then they go frick around, play golf, dick around, and when they go start the next season they only have ideas for a few episodes, and they’re quickly back to 20 hour days crapping out episodes. Their output has greatly reduced recently, probably for that reason.
The output has reduced because nowadays they entirely depend on real life events, theres no story of its own, the boys are no longer the main characters, they are there just to react as self inserts to trey's opinion on the real life event, which is now the main character. The only their own thing was the stupid fricking weed dude lmao farm, which is way too long overdue
and to all you homosexuals about to reply with BUT SOUTH PARK WAS ALWAYS A COMMENTARY ON CURRENT STUFF no it fricking wasnt, they had their own stuff with a small side of commentary here and there
thats what happens when a guy is 40+, filthy rich, has kids and has been living in buttfricking LA for 20 years
I feel like that’s less true now than it was some years back, when anytime something big happened they’d make a ripped-from-the-headlines episode. They went into a new era with all the serialized stories and Randy as the main character.
how is it less true, the only recent episode that wasnt really into the news is the toilets, which unforthnately is a Randy episode
>BUT SOUTH PARK WAS ALWAYS A COMMENTARY ON CURRENT STUFF no it fricking wasnt
Yes it fricking was, but the current stuff they talked about tended to be much bigger new events. It had to be something really potent with staying power for it to make it all the way into a completed episode weeks or months later. The general news landscape was different too, so dumb whogivesashit stories were less likely to even end up in their laps in the first place. And when those things made it into the show, because they were usually talked about in more generalised, less opinionated ways, meaning they were a lot goofier and took on lives of their own in the show.
I have a much stronger memory of some of the news events in the earlier seasons than the more recent ones.
It's a below average episode. It doesn't make me mad but it didn't come together well. I'm not even offended by the official involvement of Blizzard and how the whole thing comes off like an ad. It's certainly not the case that Trey and Matt needed Blizzard's money. They probably sincerely wanted to make an episode about WoW, and welcomed help from Blizzard, and it resulted in a lousy episode.
You are a dead set idiot.
the episode's great, perfect satire of the wow addicts at the time with a South Park's own style, you guys are just pretending to be elitist contrarian jerkoffs is all
Yeah I didn't even play WoW at the time, but some other MMOs, and it was quoted incessantly at my school for months
Suck my penis weenis and my lucky 7 inch wiener.
It basically focused on only 1 idea and 1 idea only; that MMOs are a grindfest and old timey Ultima and Neverwinter Nights PvP servers had a very big problem of some lvl 60 butthole that just finished the game could potentially gank all the noobs all the day without a care in the world cause there's nothing to stop him, he can even kill the low lvl NPCs.
I also think WoW was a bad choice for South Park, they should have went with Runescape. Runescape feels much more South Park-ish by having quests that are directly inspired by Monty Python's humour/British humour. It would have been a great contrast between mountaineer homosexual threatre kid humour and british threatre kid humour.
I also hate that Blizzard got involved, but their biggest idea was "Oh you need better gear, an epic orange or legendary purple item to kill that homosexual... implying he can't just revive and kill you agan and again and again. and the mods can't just ban him for abusing his high lvl in a low lvl area." Blizzard's writers are mentally moronic. They didn't stop Trey from pointing out that you cannot fricking level anymore after 7-8 lvls of mobs above your level.
There's so many good ideas to do in WoW and what do these morons do? point out how boring MMOs are, but ONCE AGAIN by pointing out that it's normal to take a RPG and overtextend it to hell and back by making it a grindfest of 4 months to reach 60 puny levels while in Diablo it takes at best 1 week if you're the slowest motherfricker in the world. It took me 2 days to beat Dungeon Siege 1 & 2.
The point of a MMO is to simulate a world. They never focused on economy, clans, rping, quests, PvP, the storyline, the shitty lore, etc. etc. they might as well have taken The Elder Scrolls 3 ; have the idiot kids reach the final boss by accident, get killed. Then think you can kill crabs till lvl 50 or some shit when the mobs don't revive.
below your level*
and also Runescape 1 & 2 are infinitely better as an official tie-in with a South Park MMO, the aesthetic fits so much better, especially RS1's shitty cutboard cutout look and RS2 that still looks like a shitty cutboard cutout but in epinn 3D.
South Park and Runescape go together like bread and butter.
Way better than having the kids play fricking CS 1.6 or CS Source like a bunch of slavs. Trey is moronic, he doesn't know techno music, doesn't know MMOs, doesn't know RPGs, doesn't know D&D, he should have maybe instead did a parody of Romeo & Juliet in Runescape 2.
Pathetic
I knew RS players were turbo autists but this is something else
Horrible take
None of this would even remotely work
It just sounds like you have an axe to grind with Blizzard/WoW
Shut the frick up, Cinemaphile. Never write for a TV Show ever. Enjoy your Slenderman movie, absolute dogshit.
>Never write for a TV Show ever
make me you uncle fricking homosexual
I don't have to, you can't even use capitals and punctuation you dirty ESL monkey beaner. hispanics n Black folk should go have sex together. Black folk & latinos/nas sitting in a jungle tree.
2 things I can guarantee for you moron - Im not american and Im definitely whiter than you, your entire family, neighborhood, the city you live in and most definitely that muttified shithole of a country
>t.
What a desperate fricking nerd, holy shit I never thought I'd run into one. Why are you going into some pathetic stupid fricking details about video games and blizzard, you pathetic sperg, it's a show that ripped on nerds and video games and was very funny in doing so. How fricking moronic are you? Were your parents siblings?
You can't fricking grasp that this show isn't a youtube channel about videogames and instead it's broadcasted on TV for normies to watch. Can't fricking stress enough how desperate you seem you dumb tryhard
>was very funny
South Park has never been very funny. Entertaining at best
South Park was consistently VERY funny for about 10 years straight since its launch, its your moronic contrarian opinions that are hardly entertaining at best
Yawn. I watched it since it came out and it was heavy on gimmicks like blood and kids cussing since day one. Now they pulled back the gimmicks so they can be preachy whiners. Sort of like you!
but who gives a crap what you think of it you fruit, arguing with me while im taking a shit is as far as your opinion about it goes
SP was an overnight success and there wasnt a kid in the country that wouldnt watch it if their parents let them, and then repeating the jokes in school
If this is how obviously and severely your autism comes across via text, I shudder to think what your in person interactions are like..
Shut the frick up, Cinemaphilecel, go jack it off to some Black person.
Ah WoW players, yes now that makes sense. Frick you and frick your RTS turned MMO. Go back to playing your custom maps in Warcraft 3 , oh right OH RIGHT WoW players never played the original RTS game, screw you posers.
Lmao youre one of those butthurt runescape kiddies that couldnt afford a wow subscription so they seethed endlessly
Cope some more b***h, your game was nothing, and is nothing, wow still gets millions of players and vanilla wow is one of the best remembered experiences
>MMO autist has a meltdown over a twenty year old cartoon episode
you're exactly who the episode was making fun of
Umm holy Fricken yikes dude
It's because it's probably the least cynical episode and actually serves as a warning to the younger audience.
Basically it panders to soccer moms and somebody like Trey Parker, notorious self proclaimed villain, who survives off the suffering of others couldn't sleep being a good guy once.
probably because it was the precise moment where they sold out.
>Butters, go buy world of warcraft, install it on your computer, and join the online sensation before we all murder you
I miss those days so much.
If you’ve ever made things you’d know there’s no real way to predict what will be popular. Crap you throw together in minutes is loved and your big multi month job you threw your soul into is torn apart as garbage.
i made a random video about cooking steaks
it got 50k views and i've been chasing that dragon ever since
This is true. The author Harlan Ellison wrote "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" In a night and never thought it was very good. But its the most popular thing he ever wrote by far. He said he had written much better works and the thing he put so little effort into will be his legacy. The world is a fickle place
reminder that matt stones israelite mother got LUCKYCHARMED
?
>I am going to go play hello kitty island adventure
Christ if he thinks he lost it here I'd be interested to see what he thinks of their output from 2015 onwards. Some of the laziest most dogs hit attempts at satire I've ever seen.
More like 2007-onwards.
It was still really good up until 2016ish
Welcome To the NHK did it better.
It’s a great episode for people who play WoW both casually and hardcore
So this is the episode where they stopped caring? That would make sense.
>We seek the brave knight known as "Loves2Spooge"
>In-game footage clearly shows he's called 'StanIsCool'
BRAVO PARKER.
bump
hey didn't like Baseketball either he's a pleb
The roadkill caught on tape scene always makes my friends and me howl
LIVE TO WIN
who itt actually watched this shit during the premiere when they were in like 8th grade
that was me. and it was enjoyable. that's all that matters.
you're all gays in your 20s b***hing about some shit you binged watched while scrolling
God, I watched the first season of South Park as it originally broadcast when I was in 7th grade. I remember watching this with this girl I used to be with.
I’ve spent my entire adult life watching this dumb show. I haven’t enjoyed it in years, but I just can’t stop.
The election / serial seasons with an overarching plot were really bad, especially when it was all about Randy's weed.
I've felt they've dialled it down a bit in the newest season, which, while not nearly as great as the golden years (which lasted an impressively long time), still has bits of comedy every now and then.
The world-wide privacy tour felt like old South Park to me, and some parts of the multiverse special were pretty funny
I was born the same year South Park started airing and I've been watching it since season 6~
I, too, enjoyed it when it premiered; but in hindsight, it was the beginning of the end of the golden age.
>Is ashamed of the WoW episode
>Everything after season 15 is fine though
Hes an out of touch boomer, hes going through his midlife crisis
I love that Cartman actually became more sociable after he began participating in something that tends to generate antisocial behavior.
He lived a happy israeli life just to drive Kyle insane, it's great
hilarious that he ended up being the best at WoW, they really hit the nail on the the
People have built long lasting real life friendships in this game.
I fricking loved that episode.
South Park is unwatchable. It's always been shock humor slop for 13 years olds.
>It's always been shock humor slop for 13 years olds.
When it came out, it was for older teenagers and college kids.
Zoomers don't realize how different (and boomer-dominated) the media landscape was during the 90s. You'd never see a show by or for American Boomers featuring Santa and Jesus shooting Street Fighter Ha-Do-Kens at each other.
The correct answer is that he felt too tired to work on it so binged cocaine and then got paranoid.
I remember when a South Park episode could change the internet overnight. What a time to be alive.
Cartman shitting into a bowl that his mother holds for him while he's gaming is probably the hardest I had laughed at anything at that point in my life when the episode aired
That was the best. I miss Warcraft.
his wife probably told him not to like this episode
Many directors and producers for movies and TV shows have shit takes on their own creations. Kevin Smith hates the original Clerks when it's by far the best thing he's ever made
Post Covid is not only the best thing they've done in a decade, it's one of the best things that came out that year
The "total badass" in this episode was a real person. He was cinematic director at Blizzard.
because its part of the time
i played CoD because i was a complete virgin spacker
The Pip episode is one of the all time greatest, yet Matt, Trey and seemingly most people think it's dogshit. I rarely saw it repeated over the years but it's fricking hilarious.
