No, they don't since they also grew up with Disney's movies. My mother didn't even knew that Little Mermaid original story had a sad ending.
Also many of them don't even know that Lion King is a shameful ripoff of a classic anime/manga series, Jungle Emperor Leo (also known as Kimba the White Lion). Even Cinemaphilegays are denial about it.

Stories change all the time, there's nothing wrong with changing stories to suit modern audiences especially with something that already got changed because of the nature of fairy tales. They get passed around and the story changes with whose telling it.
