It's trash and made it's own property name instead of taking one from a once good anime franchise. I've always coped with Gundam shows being mediocre at best since Seed, though.

Cross Ange didn't have high expectations because Fukuda. When it started with THAT scene, and got a whole controversy, it was viral for a bit, but pretty quickly people wrote it off as more Fukuda trash.

The people who followed it were sort of in a ghetto together while others pointed and laughed that anyone would bother with this dumpster fire. You're right that there wasn't the rage - they weren't seething sexists going apeshit because HOW DARE SOMEONE PUT A -WOMAN- IN A GUNDAM, they were just average trolls jeering what tiny following the show had here for having shit taste. Largely the show was just written off and no one gave a shit.

- First 3 eps are grimdark to set up the initial story
- Next ~5 eps whiplash into women's prison comedy where Ange's seriousness is played for deadpan comedy and hijinks.
- Then ~5 episodes pull some transitional drama that's almost comedically serious but has some revelations about what's actually going on
- ~4 episodes of interlude and exposition while the heroes are sidelined and the villains make moves to set up the final arc
- ~8 episodes final arc that's just over the top insanity, shock jocking, and comedic interludes, culminating in a trans-dimensional final battle that's concluded in part by cucking the big bad into a blind rage

It leans into everything that makes anime a guilty pleasure. I personally think it's a seminal work that outclasses anything you would be embarrassed to show your grandma. Admitting you like anything about the show pretty much paints you as a deranged degenerate, but that's exactly what makes it so god damn fun.

ok so I finished the series and kind of disappointed with how it ended. when the dude and the maid get blown up, i thought it was awesome because now Ange has to fight Embryo alone and the stakes are raised. And she almost commits suicide and lies there crying with a pistol and its so kino and relatable.
Next thing, the dude and the maid magically come back to life and they proceed to btfo Embryo with little resistance. But it never explains how the frick they came back to life. Did Embryo inadvertently raise them from the dead by bringing in copies from another world? Its totally unexplained and I would have preferred for them to stay dead but the anime is like "frick you, we're out of ideas and have to force a sappy happy ending"

Going off of the other world/parallel universe theory, the story could of easily just ended there. Ange kills herself. End of story.
We the audience are likely just witnessing the version where it all works out. I'm not even being sarcastic going from what's being displayed in the background of ep11 when Ange meets Salamandinay for the first time.

Also notice that Ange and Tusk do it for "three" days and nights. The show is also called "Cross" Ange. Quite subtle ain't it.
Fukuda literally said it doesn't matter how they survived, all that matters is that they survived and how it relates to Ange as a character. This is how he does his shows. He's a hack who believes in the destination and not the journey to get there.

That's a good point - it's pretty meaningless exactly how they survived in the grand scheme of things - it could be any number of ways and it wouldn't make any difference to the core story and character arcs involved.
It was also part trolling like how he thanked Vivian's VA for her work after a certain episode because she died in every previous Fukuda show.
It's not meaningless to explain how a character that blew themselves up survived. Leaving plotholes like that open allows no consistency in your story and no one can take anything that happens seriously. There's a reason model kits and Astray try and explain how Kira survived the Strike vs Aegis fight. Because consistency is important. If you don't care then the audience won't care and will be indifferent.
I mean considering the show has at that point embraced that fact that it is a comedy the fact tusk a Kira clone a character for cheating death in situations where he really shouldn't get out of it by taking it to the most absurd extreme possible.
Personally, I love the show it managed to make me laugh at it constantly at its absurdist comedy. The fact that the main antagonist has the personality of a fedora wearing neck beard who thinks he's entitled to getting everything his way makes the entire show that much better. I have no idea if the Japanese version was intended as a comedy, but the dub certainly is.
After the first three episodes it certainly was meant to be a comedy.
