Because little girls are a really really good target group. As seen as previous princess movies and frozen cemented this. They made so much fricking money with license and merch. Don‘t forget even japan (pokemon) is shifting more and more to a female mc.
Blame the moronic audience. Women that don't watch shit if it doesn't have women and homosexuals that identify as little girls as well as coomers that only care if they can fap.
Disney has never been good doing male characters because the things that would attract men like violence and attractive females? That would immediately stop Disney's animation from being family friendly. As a result it was always SAFER to use female centric fairy tales like Cinderella and feminine centric stories like Lady and the Tramp. It was always less of a risk to use soft media of that type.
The problem is this, Walt Disney died before he could run out of female fairy tales, but the Disney Company continued and by now they truly are ALL out of major female fairy tales I think Rumpelztinkin is the only major one they have yet to do. But it doesn't erase the problem that Disney is all out of feminine fairy tales and I guess they could try to find more feminine stories like Lady and the Tramp but that requires effort compared to famous world renowned fairy tales. So Disney is up shit creek without a paddle.
And after one hundred years of doing business like this? No buy gives a frick about Disney. Especially now with the rise of new competitors like Nintendo and their video game industry. Now that is one industry where Disney has no leg to stand on and no Kingdom Hearts is a pile of nothing compared to say Castlevania or Metal Gear of Devil May Cry or Tekken, etc. Video games are an industry that Disney themselves said they failed in.
Disney is fricked and no Elio is not magically going to become a popular male character for Disney. The closest thing to a popular male character for Disney is Aladdin and even then in the grand scheme of things? I think Ben from Ben 10 is more popular than Disney's Aladdin.
According to market research, female protagonists are more appealing.
More boys are willing to watch a show about a girl, than girls willing to watch a show about a boy.
They rarely bring in the real blockbuster cash. Princesses, talking animals (either gender), anthropomorphic objects, in pretty much that order.
Don’t their most popular shows have male mcs? I remember phineas and ferb as well as gravity falls doing quite well

Men don't watch Disney Channel. Preteen girls do, that's where the money comes from
Males are outdated
Male MCs didn't make them their money.

really? I thought girls generally liked boy shows
the real answer is just make an engaging show regardless of the gender of the protagonist

Little girls are a more reliable cash cow than little boys.
