Most of his spells come from a fire ring. I think it's fair that he gets a secondary weapon.

It's like Moonlight Greatsword, most of the damage is through magic-scaling specials.

Gandalf doesn't really use practical magic so a sword is more useful. Most gandalf ever did was blind some guys and throw an old man around.

He enchanted pinecones into incendiary grenades in The Hobbit. That's pretty practical

He has a sword because he can’t cast any spells besides sending a shockwave through rocks to make cliffs crumble and lighting pinecones on fire and shining a bright headlight highbeams. If he didn’t have that sword he would get killed he needs it.

Gandalf not only can cast a shield bubble around himself, but he can summon lighting to enhance his weapons. He's a battle mage. However, how most powerful skills use up his mana and have long cooldowns.

In the book, the Istari are also physical gigachads despite their old man-like appearance. There's one time where Tolkien just casually describes Gandalf vaulting onto Shadowfax's back -- the mental imagery of this was hilarious to me.

But he carried Glamdring for a reason. He was strong, the Balrog fight was meant to show a lot of that strength and when he returns, it's implied his power is much greater.

Reminder that you don't need any of the damage spells past FIR2 and that your time is better spent casting FAST, SABR, and CUR3.
    Black Mage need not apply.
    >~800 damage per cast of NUKE
I'll stick with swinging every turn for >1000 damage on a hasted, tempered up RM.
