I’m black and I love the show so does my cousin and his wife. The fact is that most people aren’t aware of the show in general and a lot of Star Trek fans in general won’t even give the show a chance because it’s animated and has a comedy label. Like, I play Star Trek online and most of the people that I encounter, that are trek fans, flat-out won’t even give the show a chance.

Occupy Wallstreet happened and then rich people decided to unhinge minorities and women to attack the only people with a correct viewpoint of reality that were calling them out, White men. As is the story of the golem, it's a shock that attacking the people that have formed 3/4 of functional civilizations for the past two thousand years is causing all manner of public services and amenities to die.

Mike is a huge hack that only ever liked Trek as a soap opera. That much was already clear from his trashy "TNG season 8" twitter account even before this dog shit show.

People that think this show loves Star Trek have an absurdly surface-level reckoning of Trek. It apes the aesthetic and makes references and that's enough for them.

Meanwhile actual Trekkies notice things like the Federation's primary symbol graphically slaughtering Bajorans on-camera, the show spending an entire episode mocking disabilities, the show spending an entire episode mocking asexuality and making a joke out of rape by deceit, and the many other examples of extreme graphic violence or crude sex jokes, and understand that this show actually doesn't care about Trek at all.

Literally the only thing the writers of this show care about is "did it make me laugh in the room?" which is a terrible way to write a show.

It means that like the Orville, it started out as a generic comedy before moving into a more standard version of Star Trek since the executives aren't paying attention to it as much as STD or SNW to meddle with it.

Basically skip season 1 and try starting from the Season 2. Also watch anything focused on Tendi (the Orion girl), this is the first show since ENT to actually try and expand on what a society ran by criminals and pirates would look like.

Watch until the first season finale, which is basically a therapy session for Mariner and the show as a whole taking place on the holodeck.

It makes front-and-center the fact that Mariner is a borderline psycho fulfilling violent fantasies with impunity while eschewing any actual responsibility or consequences within Starfleet by keeping herself constantly on the lowest rung. The show improves significantly afterward and never becomes an edgy gorefest again.

Because it's true. While there is gore in the later seasons, it's not Rick and Morty level, and admit that yourself, that's why you had to cherry pick a screenshot rather than linking to a video of another gory scene.

          [...]
the "therapy session" is just about the laziest possible thing you can imagine, too
It's a hologram of Mariner basically reading her character bio to herself

Mariner's comic dynamic just doesn't function because the way she's animated and the unnatural speeding up of the dialogue makes her obnoxious instead of charming. It's a shame because the exact same character played by in-person Tawny Newsome worked fine.

Bro therapy is important, sorry you got a shitty therapist.

Secondly if your problem with the cartoon is the medium of animation, then your gripes are somewhat irrelevant. It'd be like hating on TNG for being episodic, or DS9 for having arcs. It's the nature of the thing, dunno what you want me to do about it.

Thirdly having a dysfunctional character in a comic dynamic doesn't make the dynamic dysfunctional. Most character interaction in almost all drama and comedy comes from character flaws.

Black person you are blind as frick or at the very least too stupid to understand TNG. Barclay was a sex pervert but it was ok because the holodeck is not real people just like how video games aren't real people. You know who else enjoyed a good hologram fricking? Riker. Several times. Geordi literally got caught fapping to his starfleet coworker and then gaslit her that actually she had it wrong. And I ain't talking about Worf punching people I talking about his special programs when he gets zapped in the dick with a cattle prod because muh klingon romance. Old trek is a laugh and a half.

You are absolutely correct that there's a difference, but check sci fi movies 50 years ago. Onions green called their fricktoys "furniture". Soma fueled orgies? Zardoz? Logans Run's sex teleporter?

Don't let the neopuritan ultrachristgays hid your heritage. What we call coomers now was pretty much the standard then.

Pulp sci-fi and adventure was a bunch of thoughtless nudity and violence because sci-fi was a junk genre that only prolific hacks would even touch, with "authors" cranking out multiple stories a day for weeks and absolutely fricking blasting the market with diarrhea.

Yeah I'm sure that's why Discovery got two spinoffs. Totally.

        Anonymous

Making spin-offs of their only remotely popular shows, even though they were still losing money, especially while promoting the new shows as "EXACTLY LIKE THE OLD TREK THAT YOU USED TO LIKE!!" is an act of desperation, not confidence. Paramount+ has jack shit to watch, so they just kept doubling down on Star Trek in hopes that they accidentally make a show good enough to make more people pay for their money burning service.

          Anonymous

You keep saying losing money like they had no choice but to keep making more Star Trek lest they all be spirited away in the middle of the night. You do know Trek was taken off the air for like a decade right? Nobody is forced to keep making your nerd shit if its not making money and doing numbers.

You've missed the point repeatedly. Either they make content for their streaming platform or it all goes to shit. Streaming services are highly unprofitable. It's why these companies take on so much debt. Netflix owes 14 billion dollars alone. The business model requires that they keep pushing forward, operating at a loss, long enough that it eventually works out and they can either pay off enough old debts or take on enough new debts to keep going. You'd be fricking moronic to think that Paramount+ was doing good this whole time just because they kept making shows. What the frick would they do otherwise? It's a streaming platform and it needs content. Of course they made new shows and they still lost money while doing it and at a faster rate than the competition.

So you're saying that there has never been a profitable streaming show ever but its especially bad for Star Trek because they did not magically become the first profitable shows ever in all of streaming. Interesting. Really stupid take, but interesting.

No, you subhuman, I'm saying they are failing faster in an already failing, overcrowded market with shows that aren't even popular enough on their own platform to keep them from having to cut back and take even greater losses. Learn to read.

Your problem is that they are failing faster? Really? Why? You don't seem to care for these shows at all. I mean I've been watching them since 2016. Why are you here? I've got years of new shows I enjoy and you're over here jerking off in a corner to the idea that soon all streaming services will fail and paramount plus the the most fast of them all. Like really dude? This is what you add to the conversation about a show that ran for five seasons? You have my pity.

Paramount is tanking and (good) animation productions cost a lot more money than you think.

Also, it's ending with 5 seasons/50 episodes. That's plenty for any show.

I don't care how it really looks, I demand a full frontal scene with T'Ana. Also that this whole season has uncensored dialogue, and that the complete series dvd release (should it get one) unbleep all dialogue for past seasons. It's not a kids' show, don't treat it like one.

Most animated series increase in cost over time as you've got to reward success or else you destroy the series with departures. So when the bean counters get nervous, a series gets cancelled regardless of quality or popularity.
