The ending was fine but it triggered epic science morons who demand there be a logical explanation for everything. The show hammered you over the head with religious themes starting from the pilot and viewers were shocked when the finale turned out to have religious themes.
It's obvious there was no fricking plan for this show from the beginning, though. A lot of asspulls in the later seasons that felt unsatisfying.

I think it's a testament to how good the writers were that it held up as well as it did for as long as it did while having basically zero long-term plan. It also should have been a warning to future shows about the dangers of revolving things around mystery boxes that are guaranteed to be disappointing whether they're opened or not, but it doesn't seem like anyone learned the lesson.
Incredible first season, then leaned more and more into space soap opera with incomprehensible mystery boxes and moronic plot twists. The political drama and warfare was the best part of the show imo. I dont know if the show eventually got new writers or whatever but at some point the personal drama for the characters takes up all the screentime and the show just loses what made it feel fresh and cool. Also frick Starbuck and all her shitty plotlines

Then somewhere along the line that grounded take on everything Voyager wasn't got lost as they'd sit around the table and say to themselves wouldn't it be terribly clever if we killed Starbuck and then lied to the cast and crew about how she wasn't coming back as magic ghost angel. Think how epic that would be! Think what TV Guide will say about us!

Because the last two seasons are terrible and even if you held on you were delivered a monumental shitpost of a final episode. BSG was a very serialized show.
