The hybrid thing using real actors.
And using Travis Fimmel as one of those real actors.
    >Imma just do what I did on Vikings in this green room.

This honestly. It should have been completely CG or gone the "real actors enhanced with CGI" route ala LotR. Everything looked fine when it was all real or all CGI, but as soon the two mix it's weird and your brain rejects it.

I would unironically pay to see this quality CG in a feature length sword and sorcery movie twice.
And they could cast as many Black folk as they want and just CG them white.

I remember the first half being pretty alright, the plot twist that Medivh actually is the one who opened the portal worked very well imo.

Things I didn’t like, on top of my head:
    >Human cast has absolutely no charisma
    >human armors looked ridiculous
    >battles are a group of morons running towards another group of morons, no sense of strategy or scale, pretty ironic for a movie named WARcraft based on a fricking strategy game
    >the landscape and nature seemed really off for some reason
    >garona doesn’t look like a half orc she just looks like a human painted in a different color with fangs, I guess they made it so on purpose so that she’s frickable though

    Things I liked:
    >Gul’Dan is kino
    >Durotan is kino
    >Gul’Dan vs Durotan fight is gigakino
    >Khadgar and Medivh have good chemistry in the first part of the movie

indeed she is, but Ihonestly I also prefer a better-looking hybrid look

I watched this again for the first time since release only yesterday and had pretty much the same reaction. It really isn't terrible, but it isn't good either. It's just very bleh, which is probably the saddest thing to say about a film.

because it was trying to set up a universe and failed miserably so all the pay off that was supposed to come in the sequels never happened.

In retrospect I reckon you're right. I understand the logic of starting at the start, so I don't blame them for the choice, but given the reaction by so many who had just never played the first two games and didn't even know if their soundcard worked perfectly or not, they should have gone with something familiar.

no, humans in warcraft are canonically huge
I'm not saying it's not stupid and doesn't look stupid, it does, warcraft looks like shit but it's still canon
or at least something they retconned into the lore around the time they introduced the vrykul

they should have done the arthas story instead and played the romance angle between him and vegana Proudmore that would lead into him becoming the lich king in the sequel

it was legit decent for a video game movie. They told the wrong story for sure but the orc stuff was especially kino. I regard it highly because its one of the only high fantasy films with a respectable budget. I'd go see the sequels with Arthas and Thrall for sure

The human stuff was awful. They didn’t look nor act like warcraft humans in a convincing manner. See

  25. 2 years ago

It wasn't. Though I'm biased because Warcraft 3 is my favorite game. It has problems but the writing and drama is more than decent and the film is still enjoyable. Shouldn't have cut 40 mins out of it to flesh out the character and the world more. Also should have committed to a full trilogy from the start. Jones is a competent director who could've pulled it off. But I will blame Blizzard of course.

tried to force in too many references to the game. Didn't use the most interesting part of the lore OR stay true to the original game.
Also the performance captured orcs just didn't look good. They needed to set them up as scary, bloodthirsty monsters so humans could understandably hate them - NOT try to make them sympathetic straight away.

I kinda liked it. There's the whole bunch of problems other anons expresed, like the weird cg/live action mix, but as a fantasy movie it was pretty alright and had an interesting story. I believe a sequel could even work well and lift the first movie so the whole drama and worldbuilding it attempted doesnt fall flat.

They, in their infinite wisdom, decided to focus the movie on fricking disgusting genocidal orcs and portrayed them as good. Warcraft 2 not 1 was when orcs started having a personality. Not only that, the best story by far in the warcraft franchise is that of Arthas. I have no idea how they didn't just skip to warcraft 3 and made the movie out of that. Stormwind is also in flames during the orc fricking invasion yet we se none of that shit in the movie.

    >why was this so bad?

Why would it be good? Are you childish enough to believe that the Warcraft games tell compelling stories? It's a fricking video game setting, it substitutes story with ongoing accretions of incidental detail, or "lore." Of course this material won't work in a film.

Because besides the main character, all of the other human characters are way too young and clean looking for their roles.

All the humans look like larpers, it's really bizarre. I assume they were trying to emulate their player base in terms of people, so that fans could see themselves in the roles... But it makes the film feel like a youtuber series.

  38. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

It wasn't THAT bad but seems like director didn't know should he try catering to normies or to players and in the end choose middle way which sucked. Lore too shallow for fans and too confusing for new audience. Like you have draenei in cages to sacrifice and zero explanation who are they.
Also human costumes sucked. And Garona was green painted human instead on half orc.
Story arc they choose would work good as trilogy - they cut too much for single movie.

Also, they cut the sack of Stormwind. Anyway I don't really care for pre-Warcraft 3's plot. WC2's plot is a mess.

Bc pretentious small budget indie films are much easier than large budget large scale productions
It happens all the time. An acclaimed indie “auteur” gets a big scale production, that needs widespread appeal, and they’re no longer working within the confines of a small budget, and it turns out they’re hacks.
Most recently Eternals comes to mind. But there’s loads of examples, Warcraft being a very good one.
