It's not rocket science. G Gundam would've been good since it would've appealed to the Dragon Ball crowd, but like
said, it was too different from everything else in the franchise.
The problem is that the designer of the new logo tried too hard to make it look like the Japanese logo, when that one probably just used some common typeface. If they wanted something accurate, they could've done something like this.

Instead, they made something that feels like this.
The metal grey behind the words make it look tacky. The "new one" that is faithful to the JPN original looks much better, the font is less blocky and as a whole it looks far less stiff, which fits Wing's slightly shoujo aesthetic better.
My guess is that it was because Wing is a demographic goldmine. Five flashy super robots mowing down grunts for the young males (and 5 main robots means they will all sell well). Edgy main pilot who will blow up his Gundam for the sake of the mission, a constantly evolving political situation and lots of ideological exposition for the older males who need to justify why the are watching cartoons to their friends. The world revolves around Relena which gives the show a shoujo esq appeal and pulls in girls, and there are five pretty boys for the girls to either have crushes on or ship with each other.
The first Gundam movies got a video release first ( with that infamous dub with British Bright), same with VHS subs of 0083 and 0080 from what I recall (unless the tapes I rented fansubs, could be given where I rented them from) but Wing was the first broadcasted on NA TV. They very quickly put First Gundam TV, G Gundam, 08th MS Team, 0080, 0083 and CCA on air afterwards.
...I think Seed and Destiny were the first to be dubbed and distributed immediately after they aired in Japan.
It took until 00 for original and western distribution dates to overlap afaik
yeah iirc first wave was animevilliage dot com putting out the First trilogy, 0080, and 0083 on VHS dub or sub, then there was the tease of A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT that ended up Wing on CN, Toonami normal daytime was the normal TV edit dub, then at midnight they reran the same episode but uncut (even with a promo of Tom re-enforcing "yeah you heard me, uncut")
I think somewhere around this time was 08th MS Team and the ads for 0083 on broadcast tv strapped into Monkey Magic
yeah CN eventually broadcast a lot of stuff, but I'm just trying to recall the initial salvos
they also ran EW, pretty sure at various points 0080 and 0083, think CCA too
I'm pretty sure that EW was the same Friday that Scorpion King came out
The dubbed movies aired before Wing I think, but once Wing was a hit they aired the full original series. It didn't do well and they used 9/11 as an excuse to push the remainder of the run to adult swim.
Original Series TV dub was good, compilation movie sucked dick. Blum's Char was terrible compared to 0079 TV or Zeta's voice actors. And hole shit Kycilia's scream.

British Bright is the definitive one and I won't hear a word against him or Non-Specifically-European Sayla.
That reminds me, how come they never redubbed the movie when Zeta and CCA was out in the west? Also, I prefer shouting Sieg Zeon over Hail Zeon that was used in the older dubs.
Yeah, the TV cased was used instead of the ones in Zeta; but I just found it strange since they went ahead and released the trilogy on Netflix so I was curious how everyone will sound like since it will be a whole new cast.
No, they released the movies sub only, but iirc every anime or live action like Bleach and Full Metal Alchemist gets dubs later on which is why I thought the 0079 would end up getting the same treatment.
I dunno but I'm glad it did.
I was already halfway in the door of mecha thanks to Robotech, a Gundam that could transform like the Valkyries drew me in instantly.
Also them keeping "JUST COMMUNICATION" as an insert song in episode 3 was my gateway to jpop.
>Also them keeping "JUST COMMUNICATION" as an insert song in episode 3 was my gateway to jpop.
This, such a god tier way to make your first Gundam stand out.
Getting a Japanese OP when it aired in Canada, after all TV anime OPs were dubbed before, definitely made it feel like you were going to be watching something special. And if you were 10 and had never seen a mecha anime before it sure seemed like it. Especially since you had people getting thrown out of planes and shot, Heero in the early episodes resetting his own broken shoulder and trying to suicide bomb half the time. It seemed very "mature" and had the perfect level of edge for that time period.
It'd remind them of chicken wings

>everything else was too old
>also Sailor Moon style protags but they're boys
All audience angle, with the heavy pretty boy presence in marketing combined with mecha.
Also this is true as well, there really wasn't a better gamble at the time.
Wing was also very flashy and toyetic, it was perfect for promoting kits sales
Wing was the perfect gateway Gundam series.
>Identifiable group of protagonists with easily marketable robots

I will never accept that shitty new logo they're trying to push.
What's "new" about this
Nice job on another shitty thread OP
Are you moronic?
Look at the logo in OP's image
that's the new logo.
look at what he posted and look on the vhs box attached
That's the old logo.
He hates the New logo and I honestly agree with him.
HMMMM WONDER WHAT IT'S BASED ON
The problem is that the designer of the new logo tried too hard to make it look like the Japanese logo, when that one probably just used some common typeface. If they wanted something accurate, they could've done something like this.
This one looks good as well, no tackyness of blockyness.
Instead, they made something that feels like this.
Ah so you're blind.
That's totally what it looks like.
Really doesn't though.
You must be blind then.
I'm just saying compare OP's pic directly to yours, it even has an A in it for you to make a direct comparison.
HMMMMM

Perfect summation.
They showed 0079 before it, but it tanked in ratings so it wasn't rerun, except o. Special occasions and later, on adult swim

They broadcast 08th MS team and some Evangellion and some other stuff during Toonami's Mecha Week or month one year.
I seem to recall they also never broadcast 08th MS episode 12 because kid me was distraught with the mystery ending.
(I know a lot of people really like it, but as a kid I was worried as hell by the ambiguity)
She was the one who liked roughhousing in the prequel manga. He was a geek but did all his martial arts training in secret or some shit.
yeah CN eventually broadcast a lot of stuff, but I'm just trying to recall the initial salvos

They ran 0080 for Christmas one year. Very merry.
They also ran EW almost every Christmas I think.
wow what kind of weirdos would do that

no 0079 came after wing for the u.s. broadcast
That reminds me, how come they never redubbed the movie when Zeta and CCA was out in the west? Also, I prefer shouting Sieg Zeon over Hail Zeon that was used in the older dubs.
Probably not worth the expense.
CCA was mostly 0079 TV actors not Zeta ones wasn't it?
Yeah, the TV cased was used instead of the ones in Zeta; but I just found it strange since they went ahead and released the trilogy on Netflix so I was curious how everyone will sound like since it will be a whole new cast.

Ratings weren't great, but 9/11 happened and that was the excuse to cancel it, because America went stupid with violent media.
It also had like 2 episodes left when they pulled it.
I dunno but I'm glad it did.
I was already halfway in the door of mecha thanks to Robotech, a Gundam that could transform like the Valkyries drew me in instantly.

It was the most recent series with a full 4-cour they could use to fill 10 weeks with an episode every weekday.
Please understand linear time OP.
>the most recent series
full stop
they got lucky too because wing is exactly the right level of stupid to achieve success on toonami
With regards to the Movie Trilogy dub having a fricked up script, a Robotech guy rewrote the translation.
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=3954
he was also Abe Lincoln in Bill and Ted
>he was also Abe Lincoln in Bill and Ted
He’s not even the right one for dropping all those Star Trek terms into the script.
“Beam the commander aboard!”
“There goes the last of my phaser neutrons!”
It's the ultimate mecha show for schoolboys and I don't mean that as an insult to Wing.
If people don't like the logo we can just go back to putting GUNDAM-W front and center
>FRICK YOU I LIKE IT
On the topic of logos, what are your thoughts on the one for Endless Walz?
Christmas movie.
It has that soft cursive 18th century aristocratic feel to it which is a core part of Wing's aesthetic appeal.
I remember Gundam 00 and highlander being aired on Syfi, neoin as well
I don’t know but it was my personal gateway into Gundam so I think it was a good choice.
