Same way anons scare of ghosts. When you feel a presence nearby you begin jerking off furiously until it goes away or blows you

I always assumed it was because Sauron did not care about Hobbits, thus the rings influence was much weaker on them. Also Sauron seems to be growing stronger as time goes on, that is why even Bilbo gets corrupted somewhat too by the time the books/movies start. Frodo and Sam can carry it longer than the others but still feel effects and it seems to get stronger as the story goes on and they get closer to Mordor.
I guess Gollum is kind of a counter point but he murdered to get the ring so maybe it is just cause Bilbo found it and didn't kill anyone to get it.

The ring doesn't work as well on Hobbits because they only want simple things, this is a huge theme of the book.
It was also Tolkien's way of saying how great British people are.

But wasn't Gollum a hobbit? Or am I misremembering things?

Gollum was driven out by his family pretty quick after getting the Ring. He's had longer to decay but a lot of his condition is caused by plain neglect. Bilbo was being corrupted too but he was also living pretty well otherwise. It might be Bilbo being a better breed of hobbit or just pure happenstance that kept him from becoming instantly obsessed.

    >Bilbo wasn't anywhere near Mordor, Frodo was making a beeline directly towards it
    >Sauron was actively searching for the ring while Frodo had it, but not for the majority of the time Bilbo did
    >Bilbo didn't really have a whole lot of ambition, greed, and/or wicked-heartedness for the Ring to take advantage of in the first place, unlike Smeagol

Hobbits only lust for a comfy life. The Ring must have been bored as shit when Bilbo had it.

That's true. The Ring was probably hoping to get found by some goblin or orc.

But wasn't Gollum a hobbit? Or am I misremembering things?

      An ancestor of Hobbits.
Also it's not a case that Hobbits in general have a resistance to the Ring. It's a combo of factors. Bilbo got the ring fairly innocently. He found it. He also didn't use the Ring to kill Gollum even though he could have. And of course being a Hobbit he was happy with just living peacefully in the shire.
Change any of the above and Bilbo would get corrupted and become more evil.

Because Bilbo didn't gain the ring threw evil means. He won the riddle contest so the ring is justifiably his. Contrast with Smeagol, who murderes Deagol to get it.
Bilbo didn't killed Smeagol. He showed pity and kindness. This act prevented the ring from planting its evil roots in his mind.

Frodo was also just straight up given it and went almost 17 years without really paying attention to it. Maybe it was just getting closer to Mordor that got him. Bilbo never came close to Mordor or even knew what the ring really was so I guess that had something to do with him remaining relatively good.

Yeah that's true for Frodo, I think.
I literally just read Chapter 2 of Fellowship of the Ring in which Gandalf explains why Bilbo had an "easier" time dealing with the ring.

what the hell you sayin bro its just a ring haha just use it lmao pussy

        Oh yeah lol

        >What's in my pocket?
        >He won the riddle contest

Bilbo agreed to give Gollum 3 guesses. Fair and square.

Oh wait i totally forgot that the riddle contest wasn't about the ring. Excuse my moronation.

But my other point about Bilbo not killing Gollum still stands. And it's what Gandalf says in the book so that's good enough for me.

            >3 guesses
Gollum asked for 3 guesses and Bilbo agreed. Gollum consented to this frickery.
In any case being cheeky during a riddle contest isn't the same as murder. Maybe it allowed the Ring to influence Bilbo to do more shenanigans?

The ring amplifies your power, if you are naturally weak, then its effects are also weak.
And it corrupts people by playing into their dreams and ambitions. Hobbits like to live in peace and on a small scale. They don't strive for becoming kings or emperors. They just want to sit in front of their homes and smoke pipeweed.

Those two reasons are why hobbits are the ideal ring bearers.

Tolkien said it would have fricked him up eventually but while he had it the ring was dormant because Sauron wasn't even thinking about it. Once it became his primary obsession the ring started behaving more maliciously.
