I feel like Scary Movie was so fricking popular that there came a tsunami of ... movies (superhero movie, epic movie, not another teen movie) They sucked all the fun out of a once low key funny genre. Naked Gun and Hot Shots are still pretty good. Loaded Weapon 1 was ok at best.
I think they killed the genre when Scary Movie came out and over-saturated everything. Scary Movie 1 and 2 were fine, but they kept going. But then you had Not Another Teen Movie, Disaster Movie, Epic Movie, Date Movie, and I think the final nail in the coffin: Meet the Spartans.
It was dead before that. All of Leslie Neilson and Zucker bros attempts after Naked Gun 3 were absymal failures. Scary Movie was garbage when it came out. Only people who were children at the time think it's good.
