It just goes to show how pampered modern royals are if they're not willing to fight alongside their men.

I mean, Queen Lizzie wanted both of her grandsons to be deployed in Afghanistan, William as heir of the heir was too valuable to risk, but Harry saw active duty fighting the Taliban.

    two possible reasons
    a) i always got the impression lu ten was a kind hearted person. he would not feel right sending his men and women to their deaths without him being there to fight with them. this makes for a bad cool headed leader, but that's what happens when you appoint leaders via blood.

    b) it's also entirely possible sozin or ozai arranged for the guy to be killed or put in a situation he would easily die.

Going out and overseeing a war probably makes you look good to all of the fire nation nobles.
Next you're going to ask why the Firelord challenged his own ten year old son to an honor duel.

The Fire Nation can't afford to have it's leaders look like cowards due to how outnumbered they are in the war and it was likely done for trooper morale as well.
Would you fight for people who are right with you throwing fire and charging into a breach or some pampered (and short) homosexual with soft hands sitting at home?

This is King Albert I of Belgium; he spent the entire war just behind the frontlines, personally commanding Belgian forces as they tried to keep the last strip of unoccupied Belgium free of Germans.

The roman emperor Julian "the Apostate" did it..... And died after only two years of reign.
On the other hand, he is remembered as a fair ruler and a badass general, so at least he got away like a chad.

In ancient times, from the East to the West, royalty often time rode out on the front lines. It was only when guns became more accurate that such things changed. So it makes sense that the Crown Prince would lead in the front.

Same reason why modern politicians get huge clout when they served in military and seen combat.
