were they paid handsomely for being talked down to by that idiotic old wretch?

I don't know why anyone with a solid case in their favor would go on. But if some israelite landlord was suing me for 3 grand and I got offered a free trip to NYC or LA instead of having to pay them I might consider it.

It's arbitration where if you lose the show pays your fines for you, so win-win.

wow that's pretty neat. I had no idea that's how it worked.
actually that's sparked some more curiosity about how this tv-law show is run. they should make a show about THAT!

        That was intentional (and based).

It's good for the defendant because they don't have to pay if they lose, it's good for the plaintiff because if they win they just get a check from the producer and they don't have to try to collect from the defendant which is usually a pain in the ass.

if the plaintiff wins they get whatever judge judy said from the show and both people get an appearance fee, travel expenses paid and a daily fee

depends on how much they are seeking in their case. And you can't make up some number, you need actual proof of what you think is owed to you.

Show pays the judgements (it's all small claims stuff so a few thousand dollars at most)
Also lots of people just want to be on TV. Maybe they're fans of the show and it's a fun experience.

My favorite episodes were roommates clearly just taking the piss and playing up the "conflict" just to be on TV.

I like Judge Judy. She's no-nonsense. She's tough, but fair. She doesn't tolerate BS. She tells it like it is. She calls a spade a spade. She gives tough love. She doesn't beat around the bush. She's pragmatic. I just really dig her style.

        Judy Judy vs Wild.
throw this annoying loud-mouthed gremlin-looking c**t into some Bear Grylls middle-of-nowhere type shit and watch the non-stop hilarity ensue.

I've been told both groups that are suing get paid what they were going to ask for in legal damages in the court room so its a win win for both groups. they just need to make themselves look like fools for a few minutes.

Because you get a free trip to Los Angeles and they apparently cover any damages awarded against you up to around $5k. For these dead beats being threatened with an actual lawsuit they get to avoid having to go to court, have someone else pay what they owe and a free trip to LA where they can visit Disneyland or look at homeless people.
