I went to a nirvana concert in 1989, and there were no (obvious/cultural) gays, or blacks in the audience, and very few women. even at the peak of their living popularity nirvana was overwhelmingly a straight white male thing, and women only started latching on to it independently of "my boyfriend liked them" after he died and they blew up into the mainstream forevermore as some kind of "legendary" band.

From what I understand Tobi and Kurt had a brief fling/non comital relationship, that Kurt wanted to turn into a full on relationship but Tobi wasn’t interested. Tobi may have somewhat cucked Kurt with Calvin Johnson from Beat Happening/K Records who was the de facto scene king at the time. This wounded Kurt deeply as Kurt was obsessed with Tobi and also idolized Calvin, his only tattoo was a K Records tattoo on his arm. Most people don’t know the lore but I think this is when Kurt went from someone who occasionally used opiates to full junkie mode, he had a pretty bad mental breakdown during this period and alienated himself from a lot of his friends in Olympia.
