Batgirl wasn't anywhere near finished though. Plus its way easier to sneak out a finished product than to download and transfer tons of raw footage and then have someone else cut together some semblance of a finished version.
Also if you're right about it being in an unfinished state then far fewer people would have access to it so it'd be much easier to figure out who it was.
Batgirl had no digital VFX finished so no one besides WB had copies of the movie

I don't really understand what WB was expecting by being disingenuous about selling off the movie to other companies just to quiet down the bad press, they only made themselves look twice as bad by essentially deceiving the public and potential buyers with their "take it or leave it" approach

why not just release it digitally for like 20 bucks or something? Yeah it won't make much but is it better than just making absolute zero?
That's probably what the other platforms were going to do. Warner just expected people to pay hand over fist once they found out people wanted to see it.
You can write off all costs in a flop so even if something costs 10 million and makes 40, if you assumed it would net 50 you can write off all 10.
But since they've got animators it's a little more insidious - the studio is responsible for health insurance for a portion of what was promised even if the studio doesn't make it's goal. So if a movie is promised let's say 10 million in profits the studio promises 1 million in health insurance costs (They would never promise that much but it's an easy ratio for this), and when it only makes 8 million in profit (after all the 'costs' which are usually paid out to family companies connected to the CEOs) hey they owe SAG or VGAG (this is also a fun little bit of wut when you look into it) 2 million dollars. Well if it was a bomb or it looks like it on paper you can call that a tax loss and pay nothing to the union.
But if it makes a profit after the fact, the VAs are entitled to a share of the profits for their insurance premiums, so frick that shit because remember - everytime you spend any money the government gets a cut! - so to avoid costs of doing business the idea is...well frick business. Frick anything getting sent out.
Imagine what would happen to the world if they made it so that those tax cashbacks are retroactive indefinitely
