The same thing they were thinking when they greenlit SEED or AGE: they can't live off an ever-aging audience.

I completelty understand the logic at play in the decisions made here, but I must ask, have they paid off? I know G-Witch has been very contentious around these parts but it's an honest question. I didn't watch it at all.

Apparently, HG kit sales were great, at least for the main Gundams.
The big question mark is whether the show will create a new and lasting fanbase for Bandai/Namco, or if it was a flash in the pan and the normalhomosexual audience will migrate to something else.

anecdotally I've seen a number of threads on Cinemaphile where people have been getting into other Gundam shows after starting G-Witch, but I don't know how many have maintained interest or bought merch of other series.

            >but I don't know how many have maintained interest or bought merch of other series.
In my humble opinion, it's too soon to tell. I will argue, for the gazillionth time, that Sunrise should really do a modern remake of First Gundam, in the vein of what was done with Yamato 2199.

Interesting. Shame younger people don't seem as attracted to war and war adjacent dramas, at least by this measure.

Always remember SEED and Destiny; SEED comes in, revitalises Gundam and drews a whole new generation of fans into the series, producing sales figures higher than Bandai had seen in years. Then Destiny comes along a year later, maintains strong TV ratings and DVD sales among this new fanbase, but Destiny's Gunpla revenue drops off by 60% compared to the first SEED's sales. Cultivating a new audience is fine, but cultivating the *right* audience for your product is what really matters

        Gwitch is weird.
It basically really did became popular with new and younger people including here in the west.
However, I feels like these people also won’t visit anymore Gundam beside this one

They can't live off an ever-aging audience, that is true. They also can't live off people that don't buy model kits and only care about homosexual shipping on twitter either.

I feel like this is fine because gundam was originally written to turn kids away from jingoism anyways

Sure they can, they're just being greedy and want to expand to the undesirable, without thinking about the consequence.

The Gwitch fans literally care more about the badly written lesbian couple than about anything else in the anime. How do you want them to give a shit about Gundam in general?

War is awesome when you're winning it. The humbling of the japanese in WW2 produced a culture of "war bad". This is why people aren't interested. Nobody who isn't a coping geezer wants to see another wank about people crying that fighting is wrong.

Also the only reference young people have today for war is America's botched occupation of Iraq which they then also botched leaving Iraq and the the current Ukraine War. Ukraine is currently like episodes of G-Witch or IBO: stuff that is happening is "oh this area is now occupied by Russia" or "oh this area is now un-occupied by Russia" and "Russia bombed this building" or "Ukraine bombed this building". Very little movement. So for entertainment purposes, anyone drawing upon Ukraine War would also write a very terrible war drama that has terrible pacing too.

Because Bandai mandated it, along with the robot/creature in the promotional media appearing in the first episode. This is why for example Taiki had a dream about Shoutmon x4 in the first episode of Xros Wars. Otherwise kids would have to wait for weeks until the face of the series appeared. And the fight in every episode was mandated because SOMEONE thought it was a good idea to have a mecha action show where the action starts in the third episode.
Even so G-Witch put as little time into the mecha as possible and instead invested it on a moron having an awkward time in highschool with some farm animals in the background.

presumably no, since there's not much yuri in gundam and this is arguably one of the worst places to discuss g-witch.

The same thing they were thinking when they greenlit SEED or AGE: they can't live off an ever-aging audience.

I think this is the core issue for Gundam going forward, kids these days don't really have war on their minds. Hell, they probably didn't even back during SEED's heyday, considering that kira solves war by having the biggest gun(dam)s and being the protagonist. Bandai's best move would probably be to make more intimately character-focused stuff; like the old melodrama from SEED, but more refined. The character interactions, primarily between suletta and miorine, are what most people liked about G-Witch and an example of what works.

They'll whine for a while about why subsequent Gundam series don't have yuri and then cling to Gwitch like a survivor from a sinking ship. Eventually, they'll move on to the next yuri thing. It's just a fetish for them.

Testing the waters. Trying to get some new fans, but after seeing that they're just bunch of rabid dogs that was obsessed with fictional lesbian couples, they're just going back to their roots and cater to the Chinamen.

The only goodies that will be bought up by the "fans" would only be something that's related to the dyke pairs; Their MS, their merch and so on, while the rest are going to be ignored, this includes previous and later series as well.
Chinamen, on other hand will buy anything with Gundam name on it. They're not going to alienate Xi's people just to sate the xe/xer twittards, especially since they has shown their true nature with the whole arson threat moronation.

The Kyoto Animation fire four years ago. From what I understood, because of the debacle about discussing Suletta and Miorine's relationship (the initial edition of Gundam Ace commenting on it had Kana Ichinose claim Suletta and Miorine are now a married but the current edition altered it by claiming you ahev to watch the show and interpret their relationship), someone threatened to attack Bandai Namco headquarters like what Shinji Aoba did with Kyoto Animation.

Anon, those chink was the one of people who seeth when Bandai "denied" the marriage.
Just because CCP hate homosexualry doesn't mean it's people are on board of those idea. Chink still have lot's of Yuri and Fujo fanbases.

Actually Anon, I think outside of SEED, China's next fav series is probably G-Witch. You can measure what China likes based on what types of bootlegs they make that are 1:1 copies, followed by upscales, and then interpretive renditions. There's already bootleg HG Lfrith, Aerial coming, and Calibarn is probably coming soon. Additionally they're doing things like upscaling the /100FM Aerial into 1/60
