Basically some book author found an old minstrel blackface doll, thought it was count, and added it into her book about dolls where it was named the Golliwog
Book became popular
Golliwog wasn't patented and then it started showing up everywhere
They even carjacked Noddy
Apparently she might have not actually known it was even based on minstrel performances since she was outright horrified when she found out Golliwogg (later simply Wog) had become a racial slur against non-white people (but mostly blacks)

you realize prior to shit like barbie and american dolls moms made dolls for thier daughters? then after it was like 9 years between white barbie dropping and black barbie dropping. i dont know what you're including in "elderly" here, but i cant think of a single generation where the scenario you came up with would make any fricking sense.

This was probably the closest they could get to showing that without making her too unlikable
you shouldnt, because almost every other slur is just as dumb
most of them are either normal words used to inoffensively refer to certain people (like 'Black' meaning 'black', 'moronic' meaning 'slowed', and 'spastic' referring to certain types of palsy) all of these were normal respected words until some schoolyard children, as they tend to do, started calling eachother that as an insult, and a whole generation of adults got bum bothered and removed them from the language
