This topic has been brought up many times before and the answers are the same; the cast diversity didn't feel as forced as the one now.
Corporations used to just kind of impliment diversity before they found out it could earn them big social media brownie points.

'90s diversity works because the character was still generally their own character. Black characters weren't defined by being black or whatever whereas nowadays it seems to be the entire point and they forget to make an actual character for them.

That's the thing that blows my mind, we had media studies in uni in the late 2000's and the idea of tokenism was laughed at as some relic of the past, and here we are 15 years later and the only fricking thing I see in media is ridiculously cliche token characters. What the frick happened? Liberal colleges taught my generation of late 80's kids that this kind of writing is bad and you shouldn't do it, clearly something happened to the industry in the past 15 years to reverse that course.

The recent Disney live action movies are also a good example if you read the interviews, specially for the up coming Snow White.
