Would it be smarter for DC and especially Marvel to just publish fewer comics? It would be less intimidating for people to pick a few to jump into. And you could focus more on quality, increasing chances they'll like what they read and buy the next one.

And go bankrupt?
They are bankrolled by their parent company and esg money.
None of that money has gone to paying their artists however.
It's not going to matter because the real customer of the big two and the large indies, comic shops, are already dropping them on favor of backissues, Manga, card games, magic, funcopop, general geezers, snd backing indies.
This, once both got bought by bigger companies they essentially just became idea farms for movies and the only real reason to keep publishing stuff is to just make sure they don't lose copyrights and trademarks
The funny thing is, the publishing company that DC was brought WB, not vice versa.
yes
good
Image and Boom literally cut back on titles
They actually saw their sales increased
They should just go back to the old anthology style so the bad smaller ones are propped up by the bigger ones and the new comics have a chance of actually being read
That actually is a good idea. Not only would it appease fans but it also would be a solid way to introduce new talent into the industry.
It consolidates a lot of problems. If they're not going forward with the Webtoon/Digital Comic route they need to go backwards to the older anthologies because all these scattered books and confusing name schemes drive people away, along with reducing manufacturing costs, it draws up some reader interest because "Oh hey I like this character or series, I get an extra story too!"
This is also an important part to remember, Marvel does publish some other comics occasionally but the bulk of their output is the same stuff we've had for the last half century. More often than not when a person hears the word "Comic Book" they'll immediately think about Super Heroes, the popularity is both a benefit and a massive detriment because you need muh brand recognition.
I don't mind when I'd buy Action Comics and get a Martian Manhunter story in the back.
>More often than not when a person hears the word "Comic Book" they'll immediately think about Super Heroes
That's not the problem, it's how every Marvel superhero is the same, they all have similar adventures and fight similar villains, and they are all either a regular superhero, a violent killer or someone trying to defend their "people" like X-men, Namor and Black Panther, even their powers are irrelevant because they use it in the same way.
>even their powers are irrelevant because they use it in the same way
I've always found it funny how most powers boil down to: energy manipulation, telepathy ' telekinesis (the X-Men cast is egregious with this), or super-strength.
I think that's also part of why Spider-Man has always been so popular. Not only people being able to relate to Peter, but he also just has very unique powers.
I'm not even that much of a shonengay but I can at least appreciate how mangas highlight the difference in what powers each character has and how they use that power (Dragon Ball being the obvious exception since everyone just fires laser beams).
Characters that have enhanced physique attributes or fight in close quarter combat are generally the type of characters that get a solo book and capable of carrying a solo book. Characters with reality manipulation, energy manipulation, matter manipulation, telepathy, telekinesis, and etc are generally characters that are incapable of carrying a solo book and thus regulated to a team book or as a supporting character in a character's solo book.
Makes sense. It's easier to make stories and even games around characters whose abilities revolve around enhanced physical attributes.
>Characters that have enhanced physique attributes or fight in close quarter combat are generally the type of characters that get a solo book and capable of carrying a solo book.
and even those are limited by being either the super strong guy with energy powers like Superman, Iron Man, Shazam, Carol Danvers and Hulk or ninjas like Batman, Daredevil and Spider-Man. Mr Fantastic and Plastic Man can't sell a lot of comics like Luffy, Flash is the only speedster that is relevant.
Would be smarter to make more interesting covers that would give people a clue what’s in the book but also be visually interesting
And most stories should only take one issue (or two if it has a good cliffhanger)
they can't cuz they aren't selling that many comics, marvel coudn't get a title over 80k last year, so they have to print as many titles as they can cuz they suck
But if they sold fewer, I think they'd have the same number of fans. Just concentrated in fewer books.
That’s what I think too, but clearly Marvel and DC disagree.
>Would it be smarter for DC and especially Marvel to just publish fewer comics?
No, just make comics with different styles and tones for once, every current Marvel and DC comic is the same, Dr Strange is unironically the only big 2 comic that feels fresh
this guy perch had the right idea: copy japan, they have manga for every genre and they don't overlap, marvel should make their super gay comics in one universe and the actual action/story driven comics in another universe
you're an idiot, 90% of manga are bought at one train stop to be thrown away at the next, America simply doesn't have that type of commuter market to reach to.
Japan capeshit is beating american capeshit everywhere.
And it's trash. Are there any good capeshit manga?
The only one I like is Number 5, which is more of a seinen take on Cyborg 009. That didn't sell well at all.
> capeshit
If by that you mean people with super powers than yes. Hell there are plenty of grea coming to age stories manga that have super powers as a setting. The closest thing to capeshit in Japan would be mahou shojo and while I haven’t read the manga if it’s anything like the anime than Doremi is better written than 99.99% of all western capehsit I have reD.
No, not magical girls. More like tokutsatsu and superheroes.
Doremi is for ultra-jaded, brain-rotted anime consoomers. I couldn't enjoy something like that because I'm not enough of a homosexual.
> Doremi is for ultra-jaded, brain-rotted anime consoomers. I couldn't enjoy something like that because I'm not enough of a homosexual.
Oh so you are moronic than maybe go back to reading your trashy capeshit.
> tokutsatsu
Also don’t you dare compare that soulful genre with your vomit inducing poorly written western shit.
I'm asking if you know of any good Jap capeshit, dumbfrick ESL. I already tried OPM and MHA.
I'm not a fan of capeshit aside from a handful of comics. I just like it when it's done well.
Tokusastsu is soulless like most franchised media, fool.
Marvel and DC's revenue relies on collector whales who absolutely must collect everything. To take advantage of collector whales, Marvel and DC have a quantity over quality business model where put out lots of cheaply made low quality comics knowing that autistic collectors will buy them regardless quality just to have a complete collection.
They need to published good and interesting comics instead of whatever propaganda that they are currently publishing in an attempt to appease social media or irritate their current fan base.
Would events sell better if they were fewer issues? There's a sweet spot where I'd be willing to pay a little bit extra to buy tie-ins I wouldn't normally be interested in just to have the full story, but an event like Judgement Day had so many tie-ins that it's not worth it at all.
They would sell more if they weren't the same story over and over.
Events are doomed to be shit because of the sheer amount of characters and world-changing happenings.
If they stopped spamming "universe-ending" events all the time and within the time difference of a fricking year between these events, then big events might actually get the impact they deserve. Also, DC is annoying with how they always focus on some superpowerful evil cosmic force that always wants to destroy the 52 universes in some way, shape, or form that I'm just reading variations on the same plot
for me stop having crossover events for 6 months maximum should be one per year
Companies like Marvel and DC make their money on selling as many single issue comics as they can. That is why the entire business is build around promoting new #1s, variant covers, special milestone or anniversary issues, events, and so on. Many don't buy comics because of the story but because they just like collecting the issues or speculatively buy them. They also sell ad space in every floppy issue and the more issues you sell the more ads you make money on. So they can't reduce the number of issues they sell a month without hurting their business, and it is the same as anthologies. No one wants to buy them. If people were actually interested in the actual stories then the trade/volume sales of the comics would be higher, but most only sell below 5K a year with very few being able to break the 10K sales barrier. Where with manga or children's OGNs their volumes sell tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions in a given year because their business model is built around selling the volumes and having people be interested in the ongoing story over specialized gimmicks.
Tldr drop the ducking representation garbage. I don't care about diversity if the characters and story are worth it, but this rerarded notion will be the last nail.
I don't think that will help. If anything, they already publish less. It's just whatever comes out is a mess.
I pity these people in a way, they work their dreams but see no returns from their efforts. And they can't see why so they just keep going like it's just a bad arc.
With books in general going more digital, they don't have a chance. To buy something on paper it usually has to have significant value. Something like watchmen deserve a place on a shelf, a gay superman or a fricking crippled spiderman don't.
The only way, as i see it, left for them is to focus on interesting normal stories and people. Not gay ass muslim israelite trans Black person homosexuals with magical breasts that shoot rainbows.
Damn buddy really drunk the kool aid
>OP unironically wants DC to be only Batman and Marvel to only be Spider-Man, X-Men, and Avengers
no, the fact that Marvel publishes so many titles means that Moon Knight and Ghost Rider get opportunities to shine that they would NEVER allow if they were only publishing 5 titles instead of 50
if you think DC's five titles would include Martian Manhunter or Doctor Fate instead of four Batman titles and a token Superman title, you're delusional
I think an anthology series works well whereby different chapters from different franchises are packaged together. Instead of putting every character into one anthology, it should be split into multiple based on different types of character, like a street-level anthology that covers issues from Spidey, DD, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, etc. An X-Men anthology would be all the teams and individual mutants that people want to see (which can revolve each month, like having a Wolverine spotlight and then having a Gambit spotlight in the next issue). There should be a balance between shitting out a bunch of books and consolidating the universe into one franchise.
That's a great idea. A bigger package would also be a more satisfying purchase compared to four dollars for one floppy.
You won't get a bigger package for cheaper, though. You'll spend $12 for the content of 3 books stitched together. or half of 6 books stitched.
Unironically ban anyone from states or Britain from writing plots or characters or have any word in how a comic should be made. Visuals are still okay, it's whatever the comic is about is so unbelievably moronic.
In English, doc?
Maybe
They need to move to anthology releases for monthly chapters and focus on graphic novel releases, since that's where the fricking money is. Although it doesn't matter, if the writers are shit.
