The vong were controversial and widely disliked for years, pretending the EU was this universally beloved thing is revisionist history by autismos crying about Disney, just like how late millennials/genz pretend the prequels are good.

    Yes.

Disney made an absolutely fatal War planning mistake when they did what they did. They should have taken advantage of the story structure and already existing canon in the books and created something that was much similar to that, if not almost exactly the same. They did pay some odd billions for this property, after all. If they stuck to that storyline, any criticism that came their way could have been deflected by saying that they were sticking to Lucas's original plan, until it became financially necessary to distance themselves from said plan if it was not successful. It was the perfect backup, and they just ignored it.

That way, the main block of Star Wars fans that existed at the time would not have been disenfranchised, and the fan base could only have grown from where it already was, instead of shrinking considerably and forcing Disney to fill their movies with political garbage to attract people that weren't interested in Star Wars in the first place. Don't tear down the house, build on the foundation that you already have.

Also, not having a solid storyline director to make sure that everything was coherent was another giant mistake that I really don't understand. This is the same company that simultaneously put out the first three phases of the Marvel cinematic Universe, and had produced the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy a decade before.

If I was disney, I would have dropped a blank check in front of the guy who did Pirates of the Caribbean and beg him to do the same thing for star wars.

Basically, if people end up not liking the bong on screen to the point of Disney needing to pivot their storyline, they can just kill them off in the course of a movie and go somewhere else. At least trying Lucas's original accepted canon would have been the safest and most secure bet.

    Praise SOL

No, you can't just rush and jump right into the Vong right off the bat. They needed to build that up over a long time, it's more appropriate for a tv series. The Sequel Trilogy was meant to first show how the New Republic, the new Jedi Order, the main characters and their families had grown and changed. Then they'd find clues, hints, and evidence of some mystery out on the outer rim which ends up being the Vong coming to their galaxy and advance scouts already being there.

The main problem with star wars movies is that every trilogy has to be this gigantic spectacle that quickly introduces a new big bad villain then wraps everything up in a few hours while hitting all the right notes to entertain millions of mouthbreathers. There's only so many times you can do that before it gets moronic wondering where these new bad guys have been hiding while the previous war was going on. That's literally what led to the Vong since after Thrawn, Clone Palpatine, and a couple others, there wasn't a way to keep pretending there were dozens more serious bad guys hiding and waiting for their turn to attack the galaxy.

i mean anything would be better than yet another rebel vs empires retread. there were still some cool ideas with the vong. like their history where they came about because they got caught in a war between two different races of droids was pretty cool.

yeah and all their technology being biological was also pretty unique. maybe the whole vong thing was misplayed in EU but there's still a lot of good ideas you can play with for movies/tv shows. unfortunately disney only cares about making propaganda now and kathleen kennedy just likes inserting herself into the films she produces.

It was a silly idea to have cross dimensional zombie like warriors who are zealots in Star Wars. However it brought us better expansion of Han, Luke, Leia, and their children. It also treated the droids pretty well. The good part outweighs how insufferable of a villain they are.

        Anonymous

Except they need them to be seen as a "serious" villain that's worse than the Empire/Emperor. Something that won't surrender or be reasoned with, is a real threat that can kill main characters, and that has a chance of winning against the good guys and would do really bad things if they did win. How do you think the story could do that aside from making the villain over the top evil?

they don't need to self mutilate for that. The whole terraforming planets and destroying anything mechanical is enough.

ok, and what would be their personality then? autistic npcs? organic borgs? not mad or happy, but taking over everything? There's nothing scary about them otherwise and there'd be no reason for them to just eat everything in their path unless their evil or mindless somehow

No, the Vong are 40k tier. They really don't fit into that setting at all. They're Sci-fi Horror in a Sci-fi Fantasy. They'd fit better as a subset of Genestealers.

  22. 10 months ago

I didn't mind the vong plot but it ran for entirely too long
it was like 30 books and they stopped making stories that didn't involve them so if you didn't like it you were fricked

        Anonymous

That's a bit of a disingenuous counter to that specific bit of criticism. Yeah it's true the fandom has a huge issue with that, but having a race of edgelord 40k monsters attack and kill fricking Chewbacca of all things is transparently manufactured drama, and therefore unintentionally funny. "You just hate change" is a shitty comeback to someone pointing out how dumb and contrived a story gets when it's passed between a gajillion different writers of inconsistent quality.

wanting greedo to shoot first is the liberal pussy mindset. George lucas got replaced with fricking body snatchers or something and went radical anti gun anti self defence which was his political reason for making greedo shoot first. It was a political statement that was saying han didnt have the right to shoot first because hes the good guy and good guys dont shoot first.

I always thought the Vong were cool.
They were extremely out of place in star wars, but that's the point.
They came from a different galaxy, meaning they truly are alien.
They also fleshed out palpatine as well. He wasn't just evil for the sake of it.
Sure, he wanted power and to rule, but he genuinely believed the Empire was needed to fight the Vong.
I think the whole force invulnerability thing was moronic, though.

star wars is simply not about civilizational struggles and fighting off the demon/alien horde. somebody at the early EU was a big 40k guy, that's it. people can complain all they want that star wars needs to grow and it can't just all be about a force user and his family, you are simply wrong. the story came first and the setting is dressing for it
