Using Steven's POV as a framing device was a deliberate choice on Sugar's part. You can't exactly use that as an aspect to shit on when it it still allowed us to learn plenty about the different Homeworld Eras and how various main characters were affected by the war and PD's choices.

I won't defend the later Townie episodes, though. Those were definitely a downgrade from Frybo and Lars and the Cool Kids.

Sure, it doesn't necessarily have to follow Steven. Just make an anthology series or some specials.

The ending is rushed but I'd hardly call it bad, especially given the circumstances they had to work with. Yeah there could've been less townie episodes but that's hardly enough of an issue considering I'm pretty sure the final arc was supposed to be like 3-4 times as long. If you want an ending that actually ruined a show, look at Star VS The Forces of Evil.

Sugar was involved in basically all of the actually decent parts of SU, it's when she took her hands off of the show that townie filler shit happened. She basically gave way too much fricking control to her boarders and they just wanted to do mundane human slice of life shit, go check the credits on those townie episodes and the only ones she has any involvement in are the ones that end up feeding into the plot or actually involving the Crystal Gems in some way.

Yeah I agree, just clarifying that she personally wasn't responsible for the townie shit. She was just a weak-ass leader that failed to ever put her foot down and basically let her boarders hijack her own show. She's responsible for it in the sense that she let it happen, but the townie episodes weren't her ideas or even general vision of the show.

She was always too defensive of townie shit for it not to be her idea. Characters like Lars and Sadie were her OCs back in college, she wanted to make episodes about those freaks. So she has more responsibility than you assume.

The episodes she worked on with Lars and Sadie actually involved the overall plot or incorporated the Crystal Gems though, like the one with the living moss almost killing the cool kids. She was complicit for the strict townie shit episodes but again they weren't her direct idea.

She always said she wanted to make funny episodes alongside dramatic ones as she always was inspired by comedy cartoons growing up, so I think she did want those. I refuse to believe any storyboard artist wanted to do a Ronaldo or Onion episode, the lead writers and Sugar forced that

                1. There were no "lead writers" in SU, the boarders were the writers of their own episodes. It's actually a big reason that the show was such a fricking mess.
                2. They absolutely did want to make Ronaldo and Onion episodes because they were basically allowed free reign on any non-plot episode. Some of the most hated episodes in the entire series like Onion Gang and Rocknaldo came about from the boarders wanting to make more slice of life driven episodes.

                Anonymous

Lot of people love coming up with wild head canons for why SU came out as unevenly as it did. Like the studio randomly decided something or production issues must be the reason they made so many shitty coffee shop fanfic episodes. Or a character got written a certain way because of network censorship... and the real answer is that SU was a show being made by a bunch of narcissistic tumblr kids who were all constantly pitching a shitfit and trying to change the show to be what they wanted it to be, instead of what Sugar wanted it to be (though she didn't really know either because she's also a moronic tumblr kid)

                >There were no "lead writers" in SU, the boarders were the writers of their own episodes
Yes, there were lead writers. They wrote the outline for every fricking episode, it was the board artists who had to do the dialogue and interactions. But the main story beats? That was always done by a writer. That's how storyboard lead shows work, they don't just give storyboards free reign to do whatever, they still need to follow the outline for an episode given by a writer.
So if you hate the townie episodes for the dialogue, yes, that's the storyboard artists fault. But if you hate that they even exist in the first place, that's the writers and showrunner problem, not the board artist.
                >Some of the most hated episodes in the entire series like Onion Gang and Rocknaldo came about from the boarders wanting to make more slice of life driven episodes.
If you followed any of the storyboard artists you'd know they don't give a flying frick about townies and just liked the gems. They were all forced to write about those boring townies because Sugar and CN wanted episodes that can be replayed on air constantly. We'd have a shit ton more Lapis and Peridot episodes had they truly had free reign.

Sugar was all for townie episodes she wanted the humans to overshadow the gems. Originally the show was so supposed to be anti-escapism so focusing on the townies would exemplify this. The anti-escapism narrative shifted when Sugar realized that the townies treating the gems like normal people ignoring their oddities was a form of escapism from the minorities working on the show. In the end Sugar realized the people wanting to be special and going on adventures was the same as minorities wanting to be treated as normal and living an uneventful life and maybe escapism could be healthy.

Just because a leader is weak, doesn't suddenly mean they get to shrug off responsibility and pass it down to their subordinates. If she wants the credit for all the decent parts, she gets the blame for all the shit too. It was a subversion of the adventure genre but it became aimless and later there were no stakes or reason to get invested... and also it was just gay. It becomes mostly gay once there was no clear direction forward.

The series lacks a real antagonist, everyone jokes about Steven being able to redeem even Hitler, so how about introducing a series long villain that cannot be redeemed because they are just incredibly selfish and self-aware of what they are doing but have no reason to stop because "minding others" realistically does not get you anything. The villian/s need to be very competent and not cartoonishly evil.

I was thinking a race that mines the crystal gems for power and set their sights of Earth implying humans would make good slaves and cattle.

No, it's painfully obvious that CN wants very little to do with the IP outside of licensing it for merch and streaming. I think part of that is due to SU's production being an absolute shitshow behind the scenes.
      .

      >What the hell is the giant hole in Russia from?
A Gem weapon, it's either mentioned in an interview or the first art book.

Rebecca mentioned in an interview that Abrahamic religions (basically Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and all of the offshoots that were born from those three) don't exist in the SU universe.
      >What alien races compete with the gems on a galactic level?
Crossover wise think it'd be easier to list the amount of alien races that CAN'T compete with Gems on a galactic level.

In-universe wise that's already been handwaved with Sugar saying that Gems never encountered sapient life until they arrived on Earth. Yes, it's a massive cop-out considering that the Gem Empire includes locations in both the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.

Look, I love SU but I think the show did all it had to do. There's nothing to develop or anything unless it's a reboot but that's too early for that, the show got a good run, 5 seasons, a movie and a sequel.
The only thing I would ask is an anthology book to go deeper in the worldbuilding of Homeworld and gems in general but that's it.

I feel the same way. Even though I'm aware there were some ideas and characters cut for time toward the end of the original series and Steven Universe Future, I'm still more than satisfied with the 180 episodes and movie we got. Sometimes less is more, but today's fans can't seem to wrap their heads around the concept of laying a beloved series to rest. I trust that Ian JQ and Rebecca Sugar have interesting ideas on how to approach a potential revival, but I would rather they pitch new shit instead. "The Future" felt like a perfect send-off.

It's also worth considering the value of leaving something open for the fandom itself to explore. Continuing anything after a long time necessitates the shutting off of some fantasy outlets that may have grown during that time. I know many people may see such things as frivolous, but we've all seen shows that "killed the mystery", so to speak (looking at you, Prometheus). That's a risk all reboots and continuations face.

I'm not directing this towards Sugar specifically, but we live in the shortened time cycle her generation created. Turnabout is fair play. It's time for her to step aside and give someone new a chance. In fact, it may be even more prosperous for her to seek out new talent and slip into a producer role. Western companies have all but raised the white flag and begun diverting more resources to foreign players. It's time to move on from past glories and give us something different.

It's deserved the turn that it had. The final season was unambiguously fumbled, causing basically all the goodwill the show built up to be lost by the finale. Wasn't just here, either. Tumblr and Twitter fans pretty much all acknowledged they thought the finale was a failure and everyone still thinks Nefcy's Reddit interview was a sad joke that did more harm than good. It's a shame too. I still think SVTFOE will have some longer impact on the industry in the long run, but it's now just a cautionary tale of how to fumble a great show by not knowing what direction you want to take it.

That would be suicidal. In 2013, the boomers hadn't fully gone online yet and the culture war mostly existed between bickering teenagers. In 2024 we've been through two horrific elections that have radicalized all segments of US society. Culture warriors have risen to high positions of poliical responsibility by systematically combing modern media for "woke" content which they attack with maximum force. Rebecca would have senators challenging her to duels. It would be like the Boston Bomb scare times 1000

The main problems of SU was that nothing ever mattered and everyone just cried and said sorry and everything was "fine" after that.

What happened to Mao Mao on the other hand is something I will never wrap my head around. It had the PERFECT blend of cool action, silly comedy, and cutesy marketable animal characters. The gems don't take that well and chase after them. Now we have something.

  82. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

I'd like an episode where an older Steven says his gem was able to "transition" because he's a shape shifter, a literal alien, and that's not the standard trans experience.

The trans experience is fighting, and eventually capitulating, to reality. It's just living with a mental illness. That's all it is.

  83. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

I would never be able to make that episode with Sugar, but that's the message I'd like to impart. The trans community, back when it wasn't popular, was a bleak community of shared longing for something that could never be.

You try to pass in a healthy world that doesn't accommodate you and shouldn't accommodate you and it eventually dawns on you that you just can't do it. And you live with that. That's it.

  84. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

It's better to have trans allies rip you to shreds and tell you you'll never pass without deceptive lighting and camera angles than it is to have ethically questionable enablers pretend you won't become some abomination if you start taking hormones at the age of 9.

You rage at your very being. Why? Because the true self has become a crime scene. Unpure. And you want to escape to a new identity.

  85. 1 month ago

I would've loved there to be a scene where Steven is standing among the gems and it's very saccharine and cutesy and he doesn't feel safe. And he makes plans to leave.

I feel like the story of the original series has been extended as far as possible. The adventures in Beach City with the townies and the Gems has probably gone as far as it can. That said, Sugar did create a large universe of things to potentially explore, with and without Steven. If they revisit Steven (or some other character) as an adult, there's probably a lot they can do with that, which I find to be worthwhile
Also, I'd like to see more of these environments. Steven Universe's strength is probably the backgrounds and environments they design, so I think it'd be a fun thing to see again.

      >Steven Universe's strength is probably the backgrounds and environments they design, so I think it'd be a fun thing to see again.

I thought the first 2 seasons of Steven Universe were cool, obviously because of gem lore, but as the show went on it became increasingly clear that it was a low priority for the writers, but I had no idea they would make it as bad as they did after the Zoo episodes.

The gem designs got gradually worse, homeworld was just a mishmash of random constructs, their idea of "less human" looking gems is just turning them into objects like a comb and walls, they abandoned that Lars/Emerald plotline and we never even got a gem origin episode.

That art book with the uncorrupted gem designs was terrible too. We didn't even see a G1 peridot or what Sunstone and Smokey 1.0 looked like. The video games ended up doing better worldbuilding than the show ever could.

Like the MCU with Endgame or other things out there, this show had its run. And unlike other properties out there, it actually had a beginning, a middle and more importantly, an end.
An end that more or less wrapped up everything they wanted to tell plotpoint wise, which they already had made up along the way from the start. The "Cluster debacle" anyone?

If you are a storyteller and you have succesfully wrapped your story up, if there is nothing else to go for than perhaps an occassional "xth year anniversary special", learn to move on.

Or what? Are we going to now get the "hijinx" of Steven trying to apply for an internship at college? A reboot of the entire shitshow that just tells the same story over but this time with two more episodes on Captain Lars that go nowhere and just replace the Uncle Grandpa one?

I don't get why this is such a hard mindset for people to adopt. A Phineas and Ferb continuation sounds interesting in theory, but it's not something I actively wanted. Doesn't help that you just KNOW it's gonna overshadow Hamster & Gretel because everyone is so averse to new ideas. Same with the new PPG series in development. Was Netflix really that untrusting of more new pitches from CRAIG McCRACKEN?

Studios aren’t willing to gamble on ‘new’ anymore.

So what would need to happen for you to start to understand that Sugar and everyone else in Hollywood is physically incapable of being creative?

Sugar is...kind of creative? Possibly? She draws well.

Sometimes I want you to get it. But then other days I stop caring. I'm so mad about it that I don't want to consider you part of my community anymore. I realize that's unfair.

I've lived in a homeless shelter by the way. Very recently. On and off over several years. No one helped me.

I'm really tired of your escapism. I'm tired of your safe, middling existence. I'm going to shut everything down and watch you run cover for Hollywood. They don't need to do shit you just psyop yourself most of the time.

You hate this life, that's why you're here. I dunno, I hate it too. I'm going to destroy Hollywood and you just don't fricking get it. Look, it's fricking happening. IT'S ACTUALLY FRICKING HAPPENING. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

This person is either going to be the next Jhonen Vasquez or die of an amphetamine overdose. Possibly both.

One of the greatest weaknesses of her fellow calarts alumni is that they don't know how to read wrangle to stop their employees from doing dumb shit like Lauren Zuke.

I want to see the opposite premise.
A bunch of strong, burly, sexually questionable gem men from space who just look like rainbow colored Pillar Men from JoJo raising the human/gem hybrid daughter of their fallen leader because her human mother turned into a fricked out deadbeat after gem leader was killed fighting a british kid or something.
