Deltarune is almost entirely about the relationship between the player and the character they control. About how wierd the process of having a weak teammate kill a whole bunch of dudes to level up. It's about glitches and secrets hidden in games. It's about the connection across real to fictional worlds and treating them as indistinguishable from real.
Because that's the subtext rather than the main text. Deltarune. The main story of Deltarune is the relationship between these character and learning more about them as characters while the main story of Undertale is "look at all these trapped monster who are actually fully developed people, wouldn't it be fricked up if you killed them", that the main point. Deltarune is saying more than just "player choice is weird isn't it".

The biggest problem would be the voice acting, it feels very wrong for the characters to have actual voices rather than just communicating and expressing themselves through text dialogue

The first 2 chapter are out and it's combined length currently is about equal to that of a playthrough of Undertale. I can fairly reasonably say it's a lot less of a metacommentary of video games as Undertale.

The whole crutch of undertale's story is basically "isn't it weird how rpg characters just slaughter hundreds to thousands of monsters by the end of the game" and makes an argument that doing so would be morally wrong. On the flip side Deltarune is more about the coming of age story of a group of teenagers investigating magical pocket dimensions that likely mirror their own real life issues.
One is the story about games the other is the story about teenagers.

Because that's the subtext rather than the main text. Deltarune. The main story of Deltarune is the relationship between these character and learning more about them as characters while the main story of Undertale is "look at all these trapped monster who are actually fully developed people, wouldn't it be fricked up if you killed them", that the main point. Deltarune is saying more than just "player choice is weird isn't it".

Deltarune is almost entirely about the relationship between the player and the character they control. About how wierd the process of having a weak teammate kill a whole bunch of dudes to level up. It's about glitches and secrets hidden in games. It's about the connection across real to fictional worlds and treating them as indistinguishable from real.
Anon is right, the meta is not the main focus of the game. It's there, but it's not overwhelming and you can easily ignore it in favor of the story and its characters. Hoping Toby doesn't ruin everything by making it too meta and 'if you make the PNG suffer, you're a horrible person 🙁 '
