But that line of thinking presumes an awful lot. They aren't really compatible. Dracula in the novel/films isn't an evil sorcerer capable of advanced apocalyptic wizardry, but the whole chaos magic angle is much more relevant to Castlevania's Dracula than his being a vampire. The rape/butchery goes all the way up.

There's another Bathory movie from around the same time, a Spanish film called "Legend of Blood Castle" that people say is better, but I haven't seen it. Also apparently it has scenes of real animal abuse in it, so as someone who gets pretty upset by that sort of thing, it makes me a bit hesitant

I don't get it. I'll confess I don't care that much about video games anymore, but I used to, and Castlevania was my favorite series. I've played damn near all of them multiple times. I never cared that much about the story even as a kid. Admittedly I was always more of a Classicvania guy, but even the later games are at best very thin with their narrative and at worst are awful. Their best narrative qualities are cribbed from movies, like most video game stories and aesthetics.
These shows have dropped the ball along multiple dimensions, but fidelity was never something worth striving for.

The lore of Castlevania ain't a literary masterpiece but I love it's fun personality and style similar to how I like the plots and characters of fighting games.

I'm not going to shit on it, but it's a cobbled together nonsensical collage of Universal/Hammer horror movies with a layer of sword-and-sorcery (or fujo-bait bishonen, depending) on top. Even by the dismal standards of video games it wasn't remarkable. Even then, the aesthetics that it inherited were more significant than the plots. The fact these shows haven't really capitalized on the aesthetic variety is the tragic thing. It could've been a fun moody adventure show in other hands.

Maybe, but like I said that had more to do with the aesthetics it inherited from its influences than the stories. The stories aren't really any better or more elaborate than Contra's, Shinobi's, Ninja Gaiden's, whatever. Even when story began to get more emphasized it was usually just wafer-thin Saturday morning anime (though I'm still impressed they were able to get Meg Ryan to star in Lament of Innocence).
And that's still better than the shit Netflix did once they started coming up with original stories

Konami did not shelved the franchise, before LoS there was a new castlevania game every year, I mean, 2000 decade was very active with 3 games in GBA, 3 games on DS, 2 PS2 games, 1 PS3 game, 1 wii game, 1 wiiware game and 1 PSP game. That's 11 games in 10 years.
Konami tried a new direction with LoS because they wanted the american audience, the same audience of Gears of War and God of War. First game was OK, but second one shitted on bed, check the reviews and fan reaction.

Iga never worked on Konami after they canned this project, period. He was demoted to produce small games like Otomedius and Leedmees. Castlevania Adventure Rebirth was outsourced and Castlevania Arcade just had a "Special thanks" to him. There is a reason of why he leaves after this fiasco.
