She got more of a confidence boost from two manipulators than she ever did from her parents and friends. The whole "stealing the trident bit" was bad but being condemned for finding your roots was just ugh.
Honestly, if there was a scene where her friends took an interest in her (besides going to the dance) it would have sold me on the ending. Or at least showed that there was a better alternative besides her grandma and the mermaid.

I'm a yurigay and I hate most of lesbian couples in cartoons because their relationships are rushed or they don't really have chemistry until the very end. In the case of Teenage Kraken, we have an instance of a couple who could have worked very well and could have been the best lesbian couple of the decade, but Dreamworks decided to frick with the movie and the plot.

Combination of factors here.
1. Most writers can't pull off a decent romance to save their lives.
2. Shipping is a mug's game. Shipping characters is almost exclusively the domain of morons who get stuck in their "wouldn't this be nice?" fantasies and come completely detached from there being little or no actual basis for their ship.
3. Lesbians are unusual, numerically speaking. Having multiple in one cast can start to seem unlikely. If there's two known lesbians, people are just waiting for them to get together, and there's potentially going to be a load of bile from the usual suspects- OH YOU THINK THESE TWO HAVE TO END UP TOGETHER JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE BOTH DYKES HUH? If they aren't both known to be lesbians already, it's hard not to make it feel forced when it comes together.
4. Because it's Current Year, anything around this area will come across as pandering and inorganic. The dearth of good writers and the poisonous moronation of marketing and PR don't exactly help.
Basically, you're relying on a load of unlikely factors lining up just so, while needing good writers to execute, but instead you have tools whose contributions are tantamount to sabotage.
