Punk started in the 70s, Goth was the 80s, and Emo started in the 90s. By the 2000s they had simply been assimilated into the mainstream, i.e. you'd have popular musical acts that played on MTV or popular radio use those labels and it was safe enough that characters in children's shows were modeled after those subcultures to some degree.
