If you're doing light test, you need people who are the same color as the actual actors to check how light reflects on people with different skin tones who are in the same take.

I think CGI dwarfs where going look like the diverse stand ins. There was no actors attached to dwarfs yet. Which tells me they were going to be CGI and hire voice actors in post production. But they were not going to look like the original dwarfs. Just when photos of stand ins got leaked, Disney got ridiculed across the board.
