No, they know them from the movies. Movies reach a far wider audience than cartoons.

It's certainly a better idea than looking at anything more recent for inspiration. But it does suggest they are indeed seeing X-Men as a 90s nostalgia brand, not the thing that's going to carry the MCU, like X-Men fans want it to be.

It makes sense though, X-men was at peak popularity during this era so if you're banking on people liking them going back to that point is a good idea.

90s era X-Men was running on the fumes of what Claremont laid down in the 70s and 80s.

          Anonymous

No it wasn't. For better or worse, when Claremont was kicked to the curb, the X-Men were finally reunited after 2 years of the team being scattered across the globe plus saw X-Factor being reintegrated into the X-Men proper and all major storylines wrapped up.

X-Men #1/Uncanny #281 was a HUGE entry level moment for the franchise, as far as being the ultimate new reader jump on point for the franchise and an entire generation of X-Men fans. And at the same time, you had PAD's X-Factor and X-Force starting at the same time and Hama himself finally making Wolverine's solo book readable and Return to Weapon X (Wolverine #48-50) being another soft reboot jump on point for new readers.

Not even the early 2000 era or Krakoa era came close to this period bringing in new readers.

John Byrne didn't design costumes for many of those characters, did he? He was mostly working with the wienerrum designs, and just got to design early Kitty and side characters like Alpha Flight and the Hellfire Club.

        Anonymous

The only design (for a member of the X-Men) Byrne did was Wolverine's brown costume IIRC
Dazzler first appeared in the Byrne-era X-Men, but Byrne didn't design her
Kitty's uniform is just basically the old yellow X-uniform from the 60s
I don't remember who designed Angel's red suit though

But yes he did design Alpha Flight and the Hellfire Club and others

          >Dazzler first appeared in the Byrne-era X-Men, but Byrne didn't design her
No, she just made her debut there, and had guest appearances in several other books to try and build up interest before her solo book launched.

          >I don't remember who designed Angel's red suit though
I think the design dates back to the Neal Adams era, though there have been red and blue versions of it.

Maybe but Nightcrawler's distinct form of teleportation is a great for fight sequences
And he's a very versatile character, goes from Christian, to Pirate, to magic settings seamlessly. And his relationship with Mystique is rife with potential drama

Beast's genius stuff could go to other characters like Kitty or Forge or idk Monet if we're still in the 90s

They've already destroyed Madelyne Pryor's look, she wears a conservative black costume just like in Kevin Feige's X-Men films, they said they were going to be faithful to the comics and the first thing they do is destroy the characters' costumes if they've done that expect even worse things

You only have yourself to blame if you actually expected disney to be ok with their girls running around in lingerie. Wouldn't be surprised if they change Emma even after showing off her TAS design in the early advertisement.

they want to turn a male brand into a woke feminist brand, it's like making Barbie a male brand, that way they will never get women to consume these MCU and Marvel products, they should be humble women in comics are like in real life, those who are in fantastic shape like to show skin, but it's easy to see that among these people there are no women like that with then, so they'll never understand this concept

if they change the costumes in this way it is the biggest sign that they will change, ethnicities, personality, gender and sexual option, disney was the worst thing that happened to marvel comic book fans

Doubt they'd do both Storm and Rogue (with full powers), the two are powerhouses that would make most of the members redundant. Plus connecting her with Captain Marvel might be a barrier to entry. Gambit also feels like a character perfectly built for sequel bait.
