and I noticed very little actually cared about this, even the comment section was more focused n the commentary than the actual clip.
when it first premiered, this was big, youtubers were shilling it, the memes spread like wildfire, and adult swim was hyping this up as their new big show. and then after months of silence, the fad died down and most moved on.
obviously this is gonna pick up more steam once season 2 is actually out, no shit.
but it really goes to show how a lot of fandoms are just fads in the end, they come and then they go.

I'm sure the show will still be somewhat popular when the full season comes out, but that clip was not that funny. Sometimes the characters in this show just can't shut the frick up.

well I thought it was fine, I’m curious to see where the plot goes once the episode is out

It has always been more about the parasocial relationship people have with the creators. These people could air 20 minutes of themselves taking a shit and it'd have an audience because it's the le funny yelling meme podcast animators

now that I think about, letsplays really are just podcasts but they’re playing video games, aren’t they?

      overall, no.
but the "it's just a theremin, see?" and the UFO showing up 3 microseconds later is a solid joke

Smiling Friends is a terrible show and the more I think about it the more it comes across like another World Peace situation where the fact that a show is "alternative" from most TV syndication means it's immune to criticism.

What's weird is that no one has any problem with disliking Smiling Friends, it's when you start making specific critiques of the series that everyone throws a fit. I'm not even referring to the "neopuritan" debate or the final scene, just the structure of episodes and line delivery is often way too clunky to justify the runtime.

it can be argued that the show relies too much on LOLRANDOM humor and characters having improv’d conversations

the fact that it’s alternative to the philosophy of most adult cartoons of recent memory was by design and directly ties into the neopuritanism debate, though. when it came out, there was a huge wave of insufferable nu-tubers talking about how epic it was for being an adult cartoon with a Positive Attitude(tm) and how that made it so much better than all the mean and nasty Rick and Morties and Mr. Pickles of the world.
the whole shitshow has really illustrated for me just how childish the modern newgrounds types are and how people just see whatever is most popular online as a representation of what Teh Internets likes rather than being drawn towards things like Homestuck or whatever that are ACTUALLY inseparable from internet culture and were made during a time when the internet was still its own world and had its own fanbase rather than just being an obnoxious dark mirror to real life like it is now

Does the show actually have a single positive message? I didn't get that impression at all. If anything it seemed more toxic than most adult cartoons.

exactly. it’s extremely passive-aggressive and all the dopamine loop and anti-nihilism shit is conservative smugness directed at both the depressed males the show is trying to indoctrinate and the i presume mostly leftist crowd that’s going to be pissed off by it. in the end, it’s completely fine for the show to do whatever it wants, but it’s absolutely a manifesto for Zach’s beliefs and his condemnation of certain things is 100% there

That's actually something that has always bothered me about the discussion surrounding the series. People act like it is some super positive feel good series but by all accounts I actually think it might be more nihilistic and cynical than something like Rick & Morty.

Like, take episode 1, sure Desmond finds meaning in life but it is not due to any of the effort put in by the protagonists it is by complete freak accident that he discovers he likes extermination, and neither Pim nor Charlie either directly refute his statements about the meaninglessness of life in fact Pim is still in a coma due to what Desmond said by the end of the episode.

This continues onward, a point it feels people miss about the series is that the Smiling Friends just genuinely suck at their jobs. They haven't actually been able to make someone smile and find meaning in life on their own, it is always by pure coincidence that the conflict is resolved at the end of the episode.

The episode that of course most of this anti-nihilism praise about however is of course the Frowning Friends episode, which is the episode that actually comes closest to actually having the friends themselves resolve the plot and even then it is by the boss in a state of insanity. But beyond that the episode doesn't actually ever refute any of Grim and Gnarly's claims directly. The refutation takes the form of Grim being scarred to die, which is supposed to prove that actually something matters. But the issue is is it is an argument based on an emotional reaction not on any kind of logic. If Grim had instead faced his death and said go ahead then it doesn't work, and even if he doesn't want to die one can state that it doesn't disprove that life is meaningless. As one could easily argue that aversion to death is nothing more than hardcoded survival instincts brought along by natural selection, as those that have no fear of death tend not to live long enough to reproduce.

I wouldn’t call it a fad just nothing to focus on at the moment. It boring to talk about the same thing all the time. When there’s new content yeah people will talk more. Until that happens it’ll die down cause there’s other things to talk about. Just look at Hazbin Hotel the threads for that are already dying down and it’s only been what 5 days after the season finale. Another good example is clone high when it was on its 20 year break we still had threads about how great it was. If it’s good people will talk about it but not all the time.

on second thought, you’re right in a way.
but as I think more, many fandoms come and go but not everyone leaves.
people still talk about all sorts of properties from decades ago, because it’s still good.
with hazbin hotel, viv clearly wanted more episodes to do that thing shows like svtfoe and Steven universe, where there’s all this lore behind the scenes to theorize about and filler episodes where you get to know and love the characters and it’s all planned out, but because amazon only gave her 8 episodes she rushed through the important story beats and cut out all the filler, the end of season 1 feels like viv intended it to be the end of season 3 or 4.
with clone high, zoomers discovered Jfk and found him memeworthy, not mention where gandhi saying “say what” came from

It's not a drama, people aren't going to be as invested in the characters as a result.

The characters are designed to be laughed at in the moment. So their primary appeal and attention-grabbing will be when the show actually airs.

Smiling friends lacks intellect, philosophy, and doesn’t make you think like something like say, Rick and Morty or The Loki series on Disney+, do. I wouldn’t touch it with a nine foot pole because I have a higher IQ than that, I’m a smart guy and a mature one, as well. I feel the same way about shows like Hazbin Hotel. Fricking grow up.

Or it shows how some fandoms are just waiting to see more of a show they enjoy, don't call themselves 'fandoms' and don't sperg about things they identify with on twitter all day because they're individuals.

I felt really bad for Pimp in this episode but I guess it was for the best? I imagine if Pimp had gone through and confessed his love for her, she may have said yes only to notice Shrimp seconds later and dump him on the spot.
