No. It's the same line he's said in the past few months about a Newtype sprout. Tomino is not saying that Zelensky is a newtype, but rather that the seeds of a Newtype may be born in the children who see this war.

Not really. I think he believes humanity can evolve to the point of understanding one another but not the psychotic magic bullshit that comes with it like you see in Zeta or CCA. Part of the reason there’s no newtype stuff in Turn A or G-Reco (or there’s very little compared to other shows) is because he saw it as a failed ideology that he naively dreamt it and thought could be a reality thanks to his hippie-ish ways back in the 70s

It has been 78 years since the end of the war. How do the two view the war that is still being repeated today?

Takahashi: "When this war (the invasion of Ukraine) broke out, I was thinking about the war, and I had the despairing thought, 'Humanity will never change. Humanity was able to survive the Cold War without nuclear war and without being destroyed. The period of stability lasted for about 30 years. In Japan, it was an era that overlapped with the Heisei era, and from the end of the Heisei era, the world conflicts deepened and a great war broke out. Humanity cannot abandon war."

Mr. Tomino: "It is easy to conclude the near future with despair. When I came to think about things from the anime side, I began to think, 'Hopelessness should never be told to children. You can't just say, 'Humanity is a species that can't forget war.

Mr. Tomino: "We have to have the balance to think about what it means to be allowed to live on the earth, but do politicians think that way? Do they think only about the voters?"

Mr. Tomino said, " People who have been victimized are very vocal about anti-war and anti-war words, and about the fact that they are victims. These words have never reached the top of the government or the military in the history of mankind. We, the peasants, must be reminded of this."

Director Yoshiyuki Tomino has experienced, learned from, and depicted war, and he hopes that future generations will be able to see a world where there is no war.

Mr. Tomino said, "I think that in 20 or 30 years, when a generation is born that understands the seriousness of this case (the invasion of Ukraine) and is able to make concrete decisions, a new form of human governance will be possible. We will stop thinking in terms of extensions of the human race up to the present day. The next wisdom will be born. When we can do that, it will lead to the "Newtype" of Gundam."

Yes, but we need to turn back.

Tomino was born in 1941. By the time he went to kindergarten, war was already over in Japan. He never experience war or traumatized about it, he lived a priveledged and wealthy life.

            Anonymous

Yeah so he missed out on what the guy who wrote Barefoot Gen got as a kid, but that still means Tomino's formative years were spent during the Occupation period. Not exactly what I'd consider privileged times for Japan, unless you were in on that reconstruction hustle.

Anon, war ended on 1945. Sure the post effects remained but it is not like Tomino became a soldier on battlefield or having to eat MRE to survive. He had proper life, proper education and became anime director in the 70s. That's a very splendid life. How's your life, then?

Tomino threw some hissyfit during Victory Gundam, so would not say he is an everyman willing to what people told him to do. The way he fired Okawara off his shows also shown his tendency to control.

Wouldn't Victory reinforce the "does what is told of him", since he complied with his superiors despite them selling out Sunrise. He did exactly what they asked of him by adding wheeled battleships despite how ridiculous they were, and admitted himself that even if he thought the show would fail due to the stupid ideas, he always worked his damndest and never intentionally gave less effort to sabotage it.

                Anonymous

Do we know for a fact which ideas were his, the studio staffs', or the executives? Stuffing Victory with a lot of forgettable, unsellable Zanscare designs sounds like something he might do so there wouldn't be much profit in it. IIRC there weren't a lot of kits made for Victory besides the main Gundams.

                Anonymous

Having lots of enemy mobile suits is just ordinary, isn't it? I wouldn't think that was something he particularly ordered, since it's up to the toy companies to decide which gets kits. And they can hardly say whether a design is forgettable until after the fact anyway. I'd need to re-read Ishigaki's interview about his experience working on suit designs on Victory, but I don't recall him saying negative about it.

What I mean is that he intentionally gave them a poor showing in the animation, either they get shot down a lot or don't get to do very much at all onscreen.

Anime is a medium that disproportionately appeals to midwits. It actually has a serious entry barrier that filters out dumb people - you have to actively look up what to watch, you have to listen to foreign voices while reading subtitles, you have to learn some foreign cultural context to understand what’s going on, etc. And smart people capable of having an opinion don’t usually watch anime.
So, how does being a midwit affect one’s perception of anime? People like fictional stories that are told on their level. Dumb people like dumb anime and dislike smart anime. Smart people like smart anime and dislike dumb anime. Ain't so simple with midwits. Let’s say a person watches something that is blatantly too hard for them to understand. A dumb person - well, they won’t say “I’m too dumb to like this” - but they will say “this is too convoluted/too boring/too many words” and move on. But when a midwit doesn’t understand a show - their ass explodes because they subconsciously consider themselves the smartest person in the universe and the idea of a show above their understanding is absolutely unbearable to their ego. They’ll start to sperg out how this show is actually pretentious garbage that has nothing to “get” as a coping mechanism. Ironically, they will gobble up actual pretentious garbage that puts on airs of being “deep” or “mature” but doesn’t have any challenging substance that their midwit brains will struggle with.
And again, midwits are the absolute majority of people that watch anime, rate anime, and express their opinions on anime. This is how you get primitive garbage like Mushoku Tensei, or Attack on Titan (or almost every show with an 8.00+ score) topping both the Top Rated and the Most Popular categories on MAL. And this is why 90% of all the high-brow, thought-provoking, unique, and artistically valuable anime titles have average scores below 7.00 on MAL.

I will never understand the obsession with Authors/author commentary. Its just such a negative part of ecosystem. George RR Martin will never finish his stupid series because he gets paid more to appear at conventions or interviews than he ever could for a book. Half the time the interviews result in the disavowal/degradation of earlier content, like with Invincible, or with straight up retcons. Just watch the material and let the author die, and hope that their death will motivate them to make more stuff

Also zion vs zeon is a difference in transliteration not translation. It's pronounced the same (Jion) they just used an e rather than the more traditional i to avoid spelling it zion which at least in english is pronounced differently (closer to zaion if using Japanese romanization).

      /pol/gay never will learn
Victory wasn't even misogynistic even if people keep saying it. and then you see his view on Turn A where he openly praises matriarchial societies

He creates good works but I'll never buy into his ideals.

Friendly reminder: Tomino never experienced warfare and knows nothing about war. He admitted in an interview that he researched war, not experienced it.

    So I watched
    >Ideon
    >Dunbine
    >L-Gaim
    >All of his Gundam
I liked all of it except maybe Dunbine.
Is there anything more I should watch? Don't say Xabungle. The mecha design looks like shit.
