I saw Minus One in theaters a couple of days ago and it was amazing. Shin was good, but I liked this one much better.
As far as solo Goji flicks go it's on par with the og, if not superior. This is the most I've ever felt engaged with the human characters.

No, it wasn't playing near me and it wasn't subtitled. I saw it later and enjoyed it as the best version of the first quarter of Evangelion. I liked that it was basically a thriller about emergency management. Minus One is a better Godzilla movie though, although the love interest stuff was contrived sequel bait. It should unironically win an Oscar for VFX, it looks fricking great.

I liked it. Pretty much no Godzilla except the very original gets what a disaster Godzilla really is. The destruction of Tokyo in 54 is really top notch miniature work. That's the sort of shit only someone that actually saw Tokyo in flames during the war can make.
Shin Godzilla plays the deep concern of government well but I think the film is too afraid to show real disaster that close to the Fukushima Tsunami. As visually impressive as scenes like the atomic breath are the destruction is quite limited. There's no moment when you look around Tokyo, like in 54, and you realize it's all fricked.
